WP Cellular Data App Size Download Limit Upped to 100 Mbs

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST

According to some reports, WP users are now able to download apps up to 100 Mbs in size through their cellular data/carrier service. This is an increase from the previous 50 Mbs limits (that was once only 25 Mbs); this is welcome news for those of you out there with unlimited data plans, who hate waiting for WiFi to download an app/game. However it seems the restriction hasn’t been fully lifted in all regions, as some users are still reporting limited download limits, as someone with a horrible data plan and even worse data connection that’s aright with me; but let us know down below if you’ve noticed the change.

A Tour of Luxury: Picture feast Inside Vertu – makers of the world’s most expensive phones

Vertu, still 10% owned by Nokia, used to be a complete subsidiary of the parent company aimed at producing luxurious testaments of craftsmanship and wealth that you could also, if you wanted to, make a phone call.

Back in the days when Nokia was ascending and getting stronger than ever, Vertu began as an indulgence of Nokia designers pushing the boundary of design were budget not a concern.

Step inside the factory as TheVerge go on a photo tour. Check out the handmade phones, with each individual worker creating one from start to finish.

HTC found guilty of illegally using Nokia Modulator patents. HTC One mini ban in UK.

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 06:26 AM PST

When the HTC One’s microphones were tested, people were shocked as prior to this, sound recording from HTC devices were recorded by a potato. Surprise, surprise, the reason why they were so good is because they were developed by Nokia and put into HTC devices without Nokia’s consent.

Fast forward to today and in three days time, on December 6th, the HTC One mini (the ‘smaller’ version) will apparently no longer be on sale in the UK.

“Nokia is also claiming financial compensation for the infringement of this patent.”

How to: Using the nano-SIM and micro-SD card on the Nokia Lumia 1520

A quick tutorial available in a few languages showing you how to put the nano-SIM and microSD card into the Nokia Lumia 1520.

I’m not a big fan of yet another change to nano SIM from microSIM. It just means I can’t swap easily from the 1020/92x. I guess it’ll be easier for users with a iPhone 5(S).

The 1520 is the first of Nokia’s flagship WPs to have a microSD card.

You can use a key to get the slim card doors out. I use a paper clip end when I can’t find them.

LeakyLeak: 5″ 1080p Proto Nokia Lumia 929 for Verizon gets sold in Mexico

Here are some pics of the 5″ 1080p Nokia Lumia 929. It’s 929 at least from the software side. It could still be named something else (1020 is called 909).

These images come from a user who purchased the phone in Mexico and then sent it to PhoneArena.

The 5″ ’929′ might be just right for those who felt the 1520 was a touch too big. Let’s hope it stays slim and keeps what folks loved about the 1520 in this device.

Very minimal on the bezel side. Could be even less without those WP buttons.Screen Shot 2013-12-03 at 13.14.33

A ‘beautiful’ smartwatch in the works from former Nokia and Vertu designer

Posted: 03 Dec 2013 03:59 AM PST

The Verge reports that Frank Nuovo, former Nokia and Vertu designer, is working on a ‘beautiful’ smartwatch due Q1, 2014.

Nuovo feels that beautiful currently isn’t something you’d associate with smartwatches. Well they’re still new to market so there’s probably not much associated with them to begin with.

Do any of you guys use a smartwatch? Any opinions about them? What do they need to make them successful?

CEO Headhunter says Elop is the obvious choice for next Microsoft CEO

Posted: 02 Dec 2013 11:48 PM PST

eloptimus prime

Will he, won’t he? Initially Elop seemed to be the clear candidate as soon as the Nokia deal was set with MS and he was said to be coming back into the fold (some Nokia fans felt this was the case as soon as Elop stepped into Nokia CEO shoes). Later, some people ‘in the know’ said Elop was less likely.

Now in comes Adam Charlson, VP and managing director for executive recruiting firm, DHR International. Over the course of his career he has recruited ‘senior leaders’ to

…Adobe Systems, Convergys, Experian, FICO, Google, HP, Infor Global Solutions, Informatica, JDA Software, Microsoft, PayPal, Progress Software, Salesforce.com, SAP, Sitel, and TeleTech, to name a few…

He spills that initially, Kevin Turner, MS COO was put in place to succeed Ballmer. If Ballmer’s direction is flawed, Turner is said to be the one to turn things around. But what if it pays off? Mulally apparently isn’t qualified to be a tech CEO.

These are apparently the obvious criteria Gates and Ballmer are looking for:

  • someone who understands Microsoft’s culture.
  • someone who understands the tech world, particularly enterprise software (Microsoft’s bread and butter).
  • someone with the experience of running a publicly traded company
  • someone who understands mobile, the strategy where Microsoft has staked its future by building its own PCs and buying Nokia’s device business for $7 billion.

The only one Charlson feels fills these is Stephen Elop. He might be the guy to transform MS to a successful devices and services company. He knows the importance of mobile and has experience with Nokia Lumia in creating something new to something with the beginnings of potential success. MS has the deep pockets to make sure they can keep on trying.
