Video: 24h first impression of Jolla Phone #Sailfish

After unboxing the Jolla phone, here’s Michael’s first 24h impression of the device. Michael’s open minded to the new approach and it is ‘unlike’ and so much ‘unlike’ the simple to use N9, he finds getting used to Sailfish a little difficult at first (which he says was the case with BB10 and WebOS). Whilst he thinks it might be more powerful than the latter two, to start with, it seems the UI might be less intuitive. That’s pretty much what other mainstream reviews we’ve seen have said.

There’s quite some opportunity with the whole ‘other half’ thing, particularly in waiting to see what others might do with it.

Video: Lumia Black on Nokia Lumia 1020 bypassing Nokia Camera pin lock

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST

Screen Shot 2013-12-20 at 00.52.00

Up until Lumia Black update (which has recently started rolling out), if you had set Nokia Camera as your default camera app and you had a pin lock on, unlike the default WP app that bypasses the pincode allowing you to take a picture quickly, Nokia Camera didn’t. I extended my auto-lock to 15 minutes due to this.

1520 users already have this benefit as theirs comes standard with it. But now, as Lumia Black rolls out, it adds the bypass lock functionality.

The issue with Nokia Camera/ProCam  sans Lumia black was the way it handled your saved pictures. In the default WP camera, you can only have access to pictures you just took when you unlocked it. Should you lock the phone and long press the camera to take some more pics, you only ever have access to pictures you recently shot. Without Lumia Black, Nokia Camera would have given access to all the previous pictures if it bypassed the lock code.

Now it doesn’t. However, you can’t see ANY of the pictures you took at all as those are locked (not sure if you can have the review mode on at least).

I guess this does help to speed up photo taking time a bit. More so on the likes of the 925 which is super speedy with Nokia Camera.

Nokia Lumia 1020 crowned as BGR’s top WP smartphone for 2013

Check out this post from BGR where they crown the top Android and WP phones. Actually even iOS since there’s now a ‘choice’ between the 5S and 5C :/.

Before going on to why they chose the 1020, I think it’s awesome that WP is indeed becoming a common consideration now, something of an alternative to Android or iOS.

The 1020 gets so much praise, being more than just a camera phones and considered one of the best smartphones for 2013. It’s always a nice feeling seeing ads for the 1020 in a cinema :D. I remember when Nokia phones were once so popular, it was considered by some to be a burden that they were so ubiquitous, and in the hands of people who didn’t know how to ‘wield’ them properly.

Anywhoo, a very nice set of words about the 1020:

Nokia's emphasis on cameras in its smartphones as a key point of differentiation dates back nearly a decade (remember how awesome the N90 was?), but never has the company managed to put together a camera phone that even approaches the Lumia 1020.

Good light, bad light, low light or no light, the 1020 takes pictures that are far better than anything we've seen from any competitors' devices. In fact, this is the closest any vendor has ever come to releasing a phone that can replace a wide range of dedicated digital cameras.

The Lumia 1020′s 41-megapixel camera takes remarkably clear photos that can then be zoomed like no other smartphone photos. A bright xenon flash, Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia's revolutionary proprietary optical image stabilization round things out on the hardware side while Nokia's leading camera software adds DSLR-like controls that are easily accessible.

But the Lumia 1020 is more than just a camera. The big, bright AMOLED display is absolutely gorgeous and the phone's smooth polycarbonate case looks and feels great. Performance is just as fluid as we've come to expect from Nokia's Windows Phones and tripping it up while multitasking is next to impossible. It also features all of the great apps and services we've come to love on Nokia phones, such as HERE Maps and Nokia's free navigation app.

The 1020 is hands down the best Windows Phone of 2013 — in fact, it's one of the best phone's of the year, period.

The overall winner is given to the 5S. Mainly because of the apps and ecosystem. Funnily enough, BGR finds the gap between iOS to Android as something big enough to top things in favour for the iPhone.

Lumia Black/GDR3 Now Available for At&t Lumia 1020s (Update: T-Mobile Lumia 925 Too)

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 11:28 AM PST

DSC03831Many of us expected to have to wait till early 2014 to get our hands on the Lumia Black software update, but surprisingly it’s already available for some; those some being Lumia 1020 At&t owners. The update comes bundled with the GDR3/Update 3 from Microsoft which brings “X” to end apps and screen rotation lock; for those who didn’t jump on the developers preview option. The update should be available for anyone with an At&t 1020, by simply going to Settings> Phone Update > Check for Updates.

The Lumia Black part of the update also brings with it some goodies of it’s own, such as notifications on the glance screen (same shortcuts you’d have set on your lock-screen), bluetooth 4.0 LE support and most importantly a better camera performance.

Full changelog:

  • Daily delighters: lock the screen rotation, close apps easily in the app switcher, use custom ringtones for messaging and mail, among other things
  • Update to Nokia Camera that combines Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Pro Camera. Available from the Store app.
  • Get the latest version of Nokia Glance Screen – see quick status notifications, for example, about calendar and messaging events on the lock screen.
  • Bluetooth 4.0 LE – preserve energy while staying connected via Bluetooth
  • Get enriched camera performance, enhanced battery monitoring, and other stability and usability improvements

So if you’re an At&t 1020 user, what are you waiting for! Get updating and report back in the comments section below!

Update:

Apparently T-Mobile Lumia 925′s are also receiving Lumia Black/Update 3; it should be available by the same process listed above (good luck!).

Jolla now available to purchase in Europe

The Jolla phone is now on general sale for anyone living in Europe on the jolla.com website. The phone is €399 plus shipping (the same price it has been for people who have pre-ordered up to now) . I can’t quite seem to find out when they will ship though, on twitter they’re saying that they’re still shipping pre-orders and will ship out general orders after that.

What do you think? Anyone going to put down the €399 and order one?

Cute Nokia Animation showing off sunlight readability of Nokia Lumia 2520

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 09:19 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-12-19 at 17.15.30The last Nokia mullet ad didn’t go down so well, creeping out the blogosphere so much that it got talked about in a more negative way.

This one is a cute animation showing off sunlight readability of Nokia Lumia 2520. Whilst everyone else has to hide away or cover their screens, not on the 2520.

I love being able to use my 1020/920/925 outdoors as I wish without having to cover the screen on a sunny day. It’s funny seeing friends have to do the old improv-shade thing.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

A host of info from @evleaks. Codename moneypenny is said to be the Lumia 630/635. I think TheVerge mentioned it might be WP8.1 and buttonless?

The Nokia Spinel is an Asha device, Asha 230.

Finally, something about a Nokia Icon accessory card.

Cheers E for the tip!
