Happy Holidays and Seasons greetings! Whatever this time of year means to you, we hope you have a fantastic one :).

If you participate in gift giving, what memorable things did you get/give? Anything Nokia related?

And again, if you are gift giving….How did you do your Christmas shopping? Online/in person/bit of both? How are you at wrapping presents? This year, I was excited at first, but by the 6th item, I feel like scrunching up the item and looping tape around it. I found some interesting videos on YouTube AFTER I finished on how to wrap presents real nicely. :/

Christmas20131020

What are you going to be taking your holiday photos with? I’m firing up the Nokia Lumia 1020 for some memorable holiday memories. Since getting my DSLR I’ve been using a combo of Nokia and 60D, but this year I’ve left it behind.

Take care everyone and have an awesome time! :D

The Verge on Elop and other Microsoft CEO candidates

With the search for the next MS CEO shortened and then extended again, TheVerge looks into the remaining potential candidates.

Stephen Elop, previously from MS, then Nokia CEO now heading back to MS to head the Devices and Services division, is still one of the ‘unusual’ options. We’re pretty familiar with Elop’s background since it was scrutinised before he went onto Nokia. You may also like to see the ‘competition’ as it were which consist of Ford’s Alan Mulally, Satya Nadella and Tony Bates.

Here’s the final words from TheVerge:

A mix of experience and skills is essential for a modern Microsoft CEO, but understanding the company's culture and new focus on mobile and devices is equally important if the firm is serious about transitioning from its PC roots. Elop's experience at Nokia was mixed.  While Nokia's profits dropped 95 percent during his time as CEO, the Finnish firm was already struggling to adapt and Elop managed to trim and even turn a modest profit just ahead of Microsoft's acquisition. However, Elop has an unfortunate history of leaving companies just as they're struggling, a position Microsoft finds itself in for key consumer and mobile markets. Recent reports have suggested Elop may consider a strategy shift at Microsoft if he were made CEO, including rumored plans to sell its Xbox business and kill off the Bing search engine. The plans seem unlikely given Microsoft's new collaborative focus, but any potential CEO will want to change and shape the company their own way.

The Nokia deal signifies quite an important future for MS and a devices and services company. But there’s a lot more that the CEO has to contend with and the choice of CEO, if they ever to do make one (perhaps two or an interim one) will say a lot about MS’s real direction and future strategy.

Another piece from Michael Fisher focusing on some of the positives of Sailfish OS on Jolla Phone.

Consistent double tap to unlock (apparently not his experience on the 1020 and the G2 which also nick’s the N9′s double tap to wake), thumb friendly UI, opening apps directly into actions via the multitasking cards, action gestures and an intuitive way of collecting online accounts.

6tag Updated to Support Instagram Direct Messages

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

DSC04534A while back Instagram announced a new feature, that enables users to send private pictures to select people and have them comment on it in a sort of personal feed. Unsurprisingly this feature didn’t come to the Instagram beta app, which still doesn’t have the ability to record videos. Thankfully however 6tag has come to the rescue again, with the latest update bringing the ability to send, receive, and view private messages.

You can grab the latest update from the link below; and enjoy your private messaging ;)

Video: PocketNow on Jolla – What we love and What we don’t

5 days on, Michael Fisher gives their opinion on what they’ve come to learn about Jolla Phone powered by Sailfish OS.

Oddly they haven’t been given longer to play around with the device. On the upside, it meant that it seemed they focused quite a bit of time to get to know Jolla.

Whilst the love the new OS the attempt at gestures, I was disappointed that they found them difficult to understand. Even something like swiping from the edge to home (admittedly, I found N9′s implementation the easiest which has similarities). Reports about app functionality worried me too. We praised early reports of Android apps working without being rewritten but PocketNow say some of those apps just freeze and crash. Conversely we’ve seen comments from readers saying they are yet to experience such crashes on their Jolla devices.
