Lumiappdates: Instance 2.0 goes public! Posted: 15 Dec 2013 08:58 PM PST The original full-featured Instagram client for Windows Phone (and my favourite), Instance, has just hit the store with version 2.0. This has been around for a while, in Beta, and with the release of 6tag and the official instagram, there were uncertainties if this would be released. Thankfully, it has been released and comes with a fair few new changes! I quite like the look of this version, as it reminds me of twitter a bit – plus the choices of themes are a nice addition too!
If you’re keen to back the original client, you can grab it from the link below! http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/store/app/instance/ef18d20f-0ce9-426c-ad6a-04f42157bb19 |
Video: In depth, high quality video review of the Nokia Lumia 1020 (Chinese) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 06:03 AM PST Published way back in October but this is new to me. It’s a well produced, comprehensive review of the Nokia Lumia 1020. It’s half an hour long and unfortunately no closed captions to even attempt a translation. Very impressive work.
Cheers Daniel Cheong for the tip! |

Astrophotography with Nokia N8 and Nokia Lumia 925 Posted: 15 Dec 2013 05:20 AM PST The impressive Nokia N8 was the undisputed camera king until the 808 made jaws fall to the floor. But even now the N8 is still a fantastic camera. Here, AAS compares some shots with the 925 in taking pics of the moon (with telescopes).

Video: Nokia Lumia 1520 closer to Canon 6D than Xperia Z1 Posted: 15 Dec 2013 05:12 AM PST It was feared that the Z1 would totally outpace the 41mp 1020 when it was announced. Comparisons again and again by several tech blogs showed Sony otherwise. But how will it now fare against Nokia’s 20mp? Quite well in fact. Whilst the Z1 seems to over expose pictures and look dull indoors, the 1520 colours and exposure is more accurate. In low light, Sony has some over aggressive noise reduction resulting in the loss of detail. The reviewer at TechCloud prefers the look and feel of the photos taken by the 1520. The manual mode they find to be really awesome beating the Z1′s hands down due to having much more control. 1520 also gives better and more consistent shots when used as a daily driver.

Lumiappdate: NFC Toolkit (+ Christmas sale [TweeCoMinder too!] ) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 01:17 AM PST NFC Toolkit, a great app allowing you to create profiles launched by NFC has received an overhaul of new features lately. I use this app myself, with NFC tags around my house for getting things done. (I just wish that MS would allow devs to toggle Bluetooth, WiFi etc and not just open their settings pages). Here’s what’s changed:
If there are apps that you’d like to see added, do let the dev know (via the in-app “contact” options) – though be aware that due to OS restrictions, the app can only launch other apps that have a public URI scheme. So if the app you’d like doesn’t have one – why not give it’s dev a nudge eh? (You can learn more here.) On top of that, the app is on sale for Christmas (as is his other app TweeCoMinder) – only $0.99 until Dec 26th – so why not feel generous this holiday season and send a dollar to the dev to say thanks for his hard work! |
Microsoft Rumored to Offer Samsung $1 Billion Dollars Incentive to Focus on WP Posted: 15 Dec 2013 01:16 AM PST According to a recent rumor Microsoft are offering Samsung a very similar deal to one they offered Nokia before the WP agreement was struck. Before Nokia accepted WP as their primary platform OS Microsoft agreed to pay Nokia quarterly “support payments” to help ease the change to a new OS; which greatly helped Nokia stay in the black, or at least avoid falling to deep into the red in the past two years. Now it seems Samsung have been offered $1,000,000,000 *yes BILLION* to give WP a decent push. The news doesn’t seem to far-fetched, although the source is Eldar; our least favorite/reliable leaker ever. To date, Samsung have only made two WP8 devices, the Ativ S and the Neo; and have done a piss-poor job at pushing them; obviously not giving WP any serious consideration. But if the largest phone manufacturer would suddenly start to churn out devices at the pace they do for Androids, things could look up much faster for WP.

Lumia 525 On Sale in Vietnam & Singapore Posted: 15 Dec 2013 01:04 AM PST The Lumia 525, this year’s refresh to the wildly popular and successful Lumia 520 (which comes with almost the same package, except for 1Gb of ram) has just gone on sale in both Singapore and Vietnam. In Vietnam it’s priced around $165 while in Singapore the device is closer to the $200. The 525 is available in glossy orange, yellow, white and matte black. Anyone planning on grabbing a 525 as a backup? Or perhaps was holding out for a 1Gb budget WP? |
