News Roundup: Google Says no WP Apps, Dell Quits Smartphones, Smasung ATVI S Goes on Sale & More…

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 10:02 AM PST

Occasionally we need to take a break from Nokia dedicated news and take a look at what else is happening in the mobile world; after all ignoring the competition is partially what got Nokia in the hole it’s been in for the past few years. So hears a mini-roundup of related news to both Nokia and the WP ecosystem.

Google says no to Windows Phone. Google who have always personally made their own apps for other OSes (including revamping their Gmail app for iOS just last week), have announced that they don’t plan on making ANY apps for Windows Phone in the foreseeable future, claiming:

"no plans to build out Windows apps" and that the company  is "very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8.

This is coming from the same people who had dedicated apps for everything from Gmail to Google reader on S60 and S^3, so it’s quite possible that boycotting Windows Phone is a way to eliminate a threat before it get’s out of control? personally I don’t use any Google apps in the first place (Skydrive for storage since it syncs to my Windows 8 PC automatically, Default Mail for Gmail – It does all I could possibly ask for while looking awesome, Metrotube for YouTube and most importantly Office, which kicks Google Doc’s @$$). However there are many people too deep into Google Drive, Docs and Gtalk to climb out of the Google ecosystem unscathed; so even though this is a blow for WP I doubt it’s going to make a difference, seeing how these apps have never been available to WP in the first place.

Dell Drops out of the Smartphone Race. Dell was one of the first adopters to Windows Phone, releasing the ill fated Dell Venu Pro- which FYI is the only QWERTY WP out there (Which admittedly looks pretty awesome); however they never bothered releasing any new devices in the past year or so. In a statement yesterday Dell said that they are leaving the Smartphone industry (Android and Windows Phone both) and seeking greener pastures else-where (specifically the Windows Tablet market).

. "It needs a lot of investments to really be successful" according to Clarke. And why is Dell leaving Android? "It's a content play with Android. Amazon is selling books and Google is making it up with search. So far we couldn't find a way to build a business on Android,"

Completely forgetting that Windows Phone existed Dell cited their reason as being “unable to build a business” where it’s forced to compete against Amazon and Google. Of course this doesn’t really have a major effect on Nokia’s Marketshare of Windows Phone seeing how Dell’s share of the pie is almost non-existent (I can’t even find a number anywhere). But on the other hand it does cut down the numbers of serious players in the WP race to Nokia and HTC (as well as Huawei who are supposedly planning something big for Windows Phone).

Samsung ATIV S Finally Goes on Sale. I know we thought Nokia had dropped the ball on it’s WP8 availability, by announcing them so late into Q4 with an even later release date; however Samsung have been even worse off. Announcing their WP8 flagship the ATIV S almost two weeks before Nokia and only just making them available earlier this week, and that’s only in Canada! At first it looked as if Samsung was going to be a real competitor to Nokia in the WP8 arena, but it seems that they really don’t care; which is in all honesty.. good.

The price of the ATVI S is another win for Nokia and the 920 as it’s being priced at $600-$650 off contract (Vs. $450 for the 920) and $30-$100 on contract (Vs. $.01-$50 for the 920). If all goes well Samsung might attract some attention to the WP8 platform, but those purchases might end up translating into Lumias rather than ATVI.

HTC Drops Plans for a WP Phablet. There have been rumors going around that HTC had a Phablet device/5″ and above in store for WP8, something that would make the 8X a midrange device in their lineup. However today (right after we heard that the Lumia 820 prototype was the huge juggernaut alpha) Bloomberg reported that HTC has scrapped those plans:

the company is scaling back its efforts because the device would have a lower resolution than competing models (since WP8 doesn’t support 1080p screen yet)

So maybe it’s not too late for Nokia to release a WP phablet, just as long as they find a viable use of the extra real estate, other than larger tiles.

BB10 Gets January Unveiling Date, No Whatsapp Support Though. The race for the 3rd major ecosystem has been pitted out between BBOS and WP for a while now, with most predictions claiming that WP will clinch #3 by the end of 2012 (provided the world doesn’t end next week). However RIM’s new OS BB10 is set to be unveiled at the start of 2013, so only time will tell what they have in stock; and how much of they threat they’ll post to WP’s already tiny market share. But in a blow against BB10 Whatsapp have gone on record stating that they do not plan on making an app for BB10, but then again that’s what they said about Meego; and look what happened (hint: Wazapp).

Following the popularity of the Nokia Cardboard Challenge, NokConv have a competition running called the Nokia Paper Challenge where you can win one of three Nokia Lumia 820s.

What do you need to do? Create a Nokia out of discarded packaging. If you don’t partake in gift-giving where you are, then you can use other materials such as newspaper, magazines, flyers, pamphlets etc. It just has to be the second/recycled use of that paper. Don’t go getting fresh new material.

For some inspiration, Nokia recommends looking at the winners of the Cardboard Challenge.

We will be judging the challenge and awarding the prizes to the most creative, unique and attractive entries.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/12/17/nokia-paper-challenge/

You have until Monday, 7th January 2013 to send your entries. Entries to be made at NokConv or on twitter with the hashtag #NokiaPaperChallenge

My Dream Nokia #76: Nokia Lumia K WP8 Concept with 30MP 1/1.2“ PureView Camera, 5″ screen

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 09:48 AM PST

MNBlumia KAnother very interesting looking concept for My Dream Nokia. #76 is the Nokia Lumia K, complete with a large 5″ screen and modest hump for a 30MP PureView camera.

This was created by Jack Tang who included a thorough information pack below. The K takes some inspiration from the Fabula/N9/800/900/920 design but makes some marked changes, such as the very slim tapered edges curving to a unified hump (for the big camera)

MNBlumia K02

SPEC

•    Dimension: 143mm x70mm x 12mm
•    Primary: 30 megapixels
•    camera sensor size: 1/1.2"
•    Camera: Nokia PureView
•    Display size: 5"
•    Battery capacity: 3000 mAh
•    Internal memory: 2000 MB
•    Mass memory: 64GB

Nokia Lumia 920 is a very good smart phone. I like the body design, the pureview function, and IS .But in my view, it can be better, compare with Lumia 920, I am more look forward the next Lumia . Below is my concept,. My dream Nokia phone calls Lumia K. K is mean thousand obviously.

Like I said, I very like Lumia 920 , so Lumia K 's design is base on 920. Hope can improve the weakness point on Lumia 920.

1.      Body design.

The shell of Lumia 920 provides good protection. Many violent video show how tough it is! But I notice that the corners of phone would have obvious damage when it was hit. So I design to use soft crashworthy Material to protect the corners.

The shell is changeable on Lumia K. it make the phone has more variations.

e.g. we can launch some shell with difference type of tens for the phone camera.

We know Lumia 920 looks big. If I want add a 5"screen and 1/1.2" sensor for the phone, it must bigger. The thickness of Lumia K is 12mm. it is very bulky compare with other phones. So I try to reduce the thickness of the phone's edges, including top edge and bottom edge, and just camera part is bulge. But not like Pureview 808 or HTC One X. their camera bulge make the phone cannot laying flat on the table. So I don't prefer their way.

2.      Screen: 5" 720P

Since galaxy note has appearance, 5"up screen is poplar in market.

And 5" screen will become a conventional in next year.

1080p also will become a conventional, but I don't think it is necessary.

300ppi is good enough for human eye. So 400ppi up is useless.

I prefer save the cost and battery instead of uses 1080p screen.

3.      Camera : 1/1.2" sensor , 30 megapixels

Lumia 920 has great camera function call Pureview. But 920 just uses a 8.7 megapixals ,1/3" sensor is waste the Pureview. So I want the Lumia K has at least 30 megapixel and add the over sampling function.

Lumia 920 makes take photo become easier. But I think many users want more. Lumia K has App to provide the professional setting. E.g Aperture, Shutter, Exposure… it makes the Lumia K to be a the greatness camera function compare with other phones.

Hope you guy like it.

Thanks.

Jack Tang

About My Dream Nokia

About "My Dream Nokia"

I'm sure you've dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don't you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don't need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title "My Dream Nokia" and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Cheers Jack!

PR1.1 update for Nokia Lumia 920 includes camera fix – solves ‘fuzzy’ daylight pics

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 07:09 AM PST

ENGEngadget says it’s time to rejoice as Nokia’s PR1.1 update brings the Nokia Lumia 920 up to the performance they had expected (and from what they had originally tried in Nokia Lumia 920 prototypes!). Whilst OIS low light had always been a winner, there were some noted problems regarding low light. This was mentioned directly to Nokia in a Q&A session. Whilst it seemed it was not directly answered, clearly there’s been something in the works.

Regarding fuzziness, Engadget says that’s been fixed. However, they reckon there’s still some white balance issues.

It’s probably easier to tell if you look at the composite/cropped shots as the the pics (PR1.0/PR1.1 otherwise look the same)

Nokia Lumia 920T tops Amazon China’s best seller’s list?

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 01:51 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-17 at 09.46.18

Yesterday, Ali let us know that the Nokia Lumia 920 was selling more units than the iPhone 5 on Amazon China.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/12/16/lumia-920t-outselling-iphone-5-on-amazon-china/

Today, whilst iPhone drops down to number 10, Nokia Lumia 920 goes the other direction and heads on over to number 1.

http://www.amazon.cn/gp/bestsellers/wireless/665002051/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_cps_1_2_last

This only suggests the Nokia Lumia 920 is doing ok. We will hold our fingers crossed that they’re translating into direct sales.

Cheers @EasycapExpertti for the tip!

N9Appdate: Rocket now has native sharing and Feed Integration

There is always a war of twitter clients on mobile platforms, and although Harmattan has a small user base, there is no shortage of twitter clients at all. Until now, there has been three fairly equal clients: QNeptunea, Tweetian and Rocket.

I’ve been lucky enough to take part in the Rocket Beta, and the latest version has finally been made public. The best new features it brings are the ability to share links and images via the native share plugin. It has also come out with Events feed integration. The general consensus has been that whichever app had that feature (and multiple accounts) first would be the “king”.

Other great features of Rocket include:

* 7 picture upload services
* Username auto-completion
* Home, Mentions, Messages
* “Undo tweet”
* Search, Conversations, Favorites, Lists
* Block user
* Dark and Light themes
* Font size customization
* Change user profile
* Mentions, Messages notification
* Save URLs for reading later
* View user’s following list/profile/tweets/photo/website
* View tweets with highlighted details of images/links
* View images hosted over 13 picture services

Video: Size Comparison Lumia 920 Vs. 808 Pureview, iPhone 4/4s, Lumia 900, Lumia 800/N9,

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:56 AM PST

920 vs. everything else

The Lumia 920 is an interesting device, not just from the innovation on the outside, but from some of the design choices made in the device itself, the screen for example is .2″ larger than the Lumia 900, yet they’re both the same size. The camera is light years ahead of the N9/800/900 yet the phone manages to be on equal footing in terms of width (and actually thinner than the N9/800).

I decided to do a video putting it up against the main Nokia competitors and the obligatory iPhone, and honestly it doesn’t fair too bad; it has the highest screen resolution & ppi of the lot (iPhone included), it’s one of the slimmest (at thinnest point- Nokia’s site only gives details for the thinnest point of the device AFAIK) and it looks awesome in red (I can’t get over that).

The dimensions for those who missed them in the video (note width is according to official Nokia and Apple sites, taken at the thickest point of the phone) :

  • Lumia 920: 185 Grams, 10.7mm Thick, 4.5″ screen – 1280*768 = 332 ppi
  • iPhone: 137 Grams, 9.3mm Thick, 3.7″ screen – 960*640 = 326 ppi
  • 808 PureView: 169 Grams, 13.9mm Thick, 4.0″ screen- 640*360 = 183 ppi
  • Lumia 900: 160 Grams, 11.5mm Thick, 4.3″ screen – 800*480 = 217 ppi
  • N9: 135 Grams, 12.1mm Thick, 3.9″ screen – 854*480 = 251 ppi

Juggernaut is Actually a Phablet Lumia 820 Prototype!

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:46 AM PST

Juggernaut1

We’ve heard the name “Juggernaut” and “Juggernaut Alpha” thrown around alot, some people assumed it was the code name for Micorosft’s Surface phone, others said it was an upcoming Nokia device. Well the truth has been revealed, Juggernaut was the codename for the Lumia 820 while it was in prototyping phase. The phone easily living up to the name Juggernaut is a beast in dimensions, it looks to be easily 4.7″ possibly even 5.0″? seeing how the Lumia 820 looks absolutely tiny besides it.

“it’s the same smartphone, but one of them is the engineering sample”.

The phone was revealed in a  video posted by Igor Shastitko from Microsoft Ukraine where he was walking through the new features of WP8, where at the 8:15 mark he brings up the Juggernaut on screen stating:

There were several reasons why it is so big, one of them obviously – to disguise the looks of the new phone from competitors. Making believe Nokia’s making something big and awkward)

Of course keep in mind that the Lumia 820 doesn’t have the 920′s fabulous HD screen, so wVGA on a screen that size would look pretty ridiculous… right?

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 12:42 AM PST

qxo138I’m a little weary regarding the knowledge of online Nokia Care chat, but it’s at least something to go on rather than nothing.

Rishabh was speaking to Nokia Care asking when the 920/820/620 would appear in India. Rahul from Nokia Care responds that it would be first week of January.

Video: N9Apps: Cyclotron (webOS/ Playbook style app switching) #N9Hacks

THP never ceases to amaze me. Just when I thought he had out done himself with apkenv, he has brought the Harmattan community Cyclotron. The app (well mod really) takes the swipe to a new level, by allowing the user to swipe diagonally from the status bar to switch between apps. I can’t really do the app justice, so just watch the video below.
