After publishing my unboxing gallery of the Lumia 920 I received quite a few comments in the reply section and on twitter noting that very few true images of the Lumia 920 in red exist; so happy to help out here are a couple more images of my beautiful new phone. (Images are not scaled down, full images are 2-4Mbs in size, double click to view full res.)

-Also a guest cameo appearance is made by the good ol’ N8

Popular WP Twitter App “Carbon” Pulled From MarketPlace, Developers Say Farewell to WP

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 11:41 AM PST

Carbon is a well known cross platform Twitter app (there was a WebOS version available, as well as the currently available Andorid version); last year carbon released its sleek interface to the Windows Phone world were I personally enjoyed it. Unfortunately today Carbon developers announced that they are pulling the app from the Marketplace and ending all WP development. The reasons stated on Carbon’s blog:

We had big plans for Carbon on Windows Phone, we listed some of them in our previous posts. Yet, given the state of volume of sales and Twitter's continious pressure on third-party client developers it has become less encouraging, and given that we barely covered costs(no profit) with Carbon on Windows Phone we slowed down development and re-evaluated our next steps. Then came our re-write plan for Carbon, decided we had to re-write the app as it was based on a slow base & it was non-performant. That was the time we were in looks for WP talent here in Dubai to rewrite and start over, that turned up to be costly and not even feasible given the volume of sales.

Most of the other apps that are on sale(paid apps) on Marketplace are of a side-project nature, our products are not side projects and they are actually our bread & butter.

Blogs jus' jumped the gun with News about us pulling  the app off of the Marketplace, without even a line of e-mail for at least a simple clarification, which is a bummer given that we have been in direct contact with them before.

Since we stopped updating the app long ago, it is the best way to stop sales, there are no options for us to keep the app in the Marketplace and only stop new Purchases, so to further stop dissatisfaction of new users who won't get support or updates we pulled it out of the Marketplace.

I guess that’s it for Carbon :’( read the full post here: http://carbonwp7.com/blog/2012/09/23/end-of-the-line/

Nokia to Announce Q4 2012 Results on January 24, 2013

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 08:26 AM PST

Nokia have just released a press statement regarding its financial calendar, in it are the expected release dates for their quarterly earnings for Q4 2012 as well as Q1,2,3 of 2013. They are as follows:

Planned publication dates for interim reports
- fourth quarter and full year 2012 report: January 24, 2013
- first quarter 2013 interim report: April 18, 2013
- second quarter 2013 interim report: July 18, 2013
- third quarter 2013 interim report: October 17, 2013

So we’ve heard a lot of numbers flying around so I think I’ll go ahead and share my predictions At least 7 million Lumias (regardless of WP 7 or 8) sold, with over 10 Million if the 920, 820 and 620 are fully released in China (with availability) within the next few days. However that’s highly unlikely so I’ll stick to 7 million +/- 500K with greater sales in Q1 2012; anyone agree?

Video & Gallery: Unboxing My Glamorous Red Lumia 920

So it Finally reached! My beautiful new Lumia 920, after an agonizing week where it was held by Jordanian customs (those bastards!) I got it through! And it is beautiful! (Are my exclamations marks conveying the level of my excitement to you guys?). Without further ado, onto the obligatory video:

I also made an equally awesome unboxing filmed in Arabic (for those of you that speak it, check it out over here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtIRVMkyyrY&feature=g-user-u

And now some picture, but first off some thoughts on the 920:

  • This screen is RIDICULOUS! the touch sensitivity, the scrolling, the refresh rate thanks to PureMotion HD+ (it’s not something you can show on video or describe, but when you use it you’ll notice it)
  • Tiles are pretty big too, which confused me at first seeing how a single “medium size tile” was almost double the size of my Lumia 800s tile
  • The camera is amazing at night; more on that in the future
  • I swear to you it’s not heavy
  • It’s beautiful
  • It’s red.
  • I love it.

Whatsapp for Windows Phone 8 Said to Be Available “By the End of This Week”

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 07:20 AM PST

wp_ss_20121212_0002

Not having whatsapp on my new Lumia 920 kinda sucks, but it does give me a reason to keep my Lumia 900 around for a bit more so that’s not too bad. However according to some Nokia Care representives whatsapp for WP8 should be available soon (last week we heard that it will be 6X faster than the old version- YAY!):

“In response to your concern, kindly note that The WhatsApp Messenger application for WP8 phones is being updated to a newer version and it will be available in the Microsoft Store by the end of this week so its better to wait for it as the application you have downloaded from www.windowsphone.com is not compatible with Lumia 920.”

So shouldn’t be too much longer now folks :/

Nokia Lumia 920 HAS an FM Tuner, It’s Just Not On.

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 06:44 AM PST

In a recent article on Nokia conversations about how amazing the S4 processor in the Lumia 920 is, they let slip that the S4 processor in the Lumia 920 does indeed have an FM Tuner; contrary to what WP8 wants to force down our throats. In Nokia conversations post under “connectivity ingredients” the S4 is listed to carry an Fm Tuner:

Connectivity Ingredients:

4 parts LTE Multimode Modem

2 parts GPS

1 part WiFi

1 part Bluetooth

1 part FM tuner

It would seem that Nokia went ahead and included this in the 920 even though it isn’t currently supported by WP8; however should they ever change their mind all it needs is a software update and Voilà, you can rock out to your local church station. It is worth keeping in mind that Nokia did something similar with the C7, where it was made with an NFC chip which was only activated in a later update. So for all you radio fans, don’t worry there’s still hope.
