Video: Nokia 808 vs Lumia 920 OIS test

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 02:12 PM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-16 at 22.06.20Marc from the PureViewClub compares his Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia Lumia 920 video stabilisation.

I’ve not really had much of a problem with the 808 in terms of shakes (well, unless walking/running) but this video really does show how much of a difference OIS makes on the 920. The 920 looks like it’s just floating.

I think the car’s shakes exaggerate the shakes you’d normally get if trying to get handheld shots.

WP 7.8 Rolling Out To Lumia 800 Devices NOW

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 08:54 AM PST

Hey guys, quick update as I’m posting this from my phone, but it seems that wp7.8 has started to roll out to some Lumia 800s. As usual with Nokia this is probably going to be a gradual roll out and also carrier dependant, so don’t worry if you don’t see any updates on your phone.

As a reminder this update mainly brings the new start screen, new accent colors, Bluetooth sharing for lumias and some other Lumia exclusive features such as a ringtone maker and cinemagraph (will probably come as an app update later).

So anyone get the update yet?

Lumia 920T Outselling iPhone 5 On Amazon China

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 06:35 AM PST

amazonchina

One of Nokia’s largest victories this month has been the fact that it beat out the iPhone for the number one spot on China Mobile, which is the largest carrier IN THE WORLD (say that in Jeremy Clarkson’s Voice). Now that both the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920 are on sale through Amazon China the 920T is placed at 4th place (behind several low-end cheap knock off phones) with the iPhone 5 at its heals at #5.

If I recall correctly both were released at the same time which should give for a fair playing field, but only time will tell how long the 920 can stay ahead of the iPhone.

My Dream Nokia #75: Nokia Lumia 0360 – Xbox Phone

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 06:23 AM PST

Xbox189

Here we have another Lumia concept, this one called the 0360, whihc pays tribute to both the N-Gage and the Xbox 360, the phone is in no means slim, but then again that’s not the point of this phone. The phone has an integrated Kinect camera to give you touchless games.

Introducing the Nokia 0360 Concept a name chosen as a salute to the Xbox 360.
This is a phone that borrows Nokia N.Cage’s design language and attractiveness and adds the magic of the XBOX to spice up the deal.
It’s almost a given that non touch interactions eventually will become the norm, So this phone is equipped with a KINECT camera made specially for Windows Phone 8.   It helps create better games where your fingers doesn’t cover the screen or smudge it , it can also be used within the UI , only you need to hold the two green areas on the sides to enable that feature to prevent unintended interactions, and to save batteries
Speaking of batteries there are two both at 2000mah !!! , one powers the KINECT camera along with all the heavy duty stuff like powering the huge 5″ screen, the other one handles all normal activities of the phone , The Nokia 0360 will use both batteries in powersaving mode to provide an amazing standby/calling/web browsing experience.

Once you put the 0360 on a charger you have the option to activate the KINECT camera full time which will make buying a stand for it all the more essential.

It’s noteworthy to remark that this concept was  photoshoped to life using a black rectangle and a Sonim XP3300.
Thanks for reading
@nabkawe5 .

Thanks for sharing this interesting Concept with us Nabkawe5!

My Dream Nokia #74: Nokia Lumia 950 WP8 Concept, sexy curves and glowing colour notifications.

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 12:50 AM PST

MNBLUMIA 950 FinalThe above design is the Nokia Lumia 950 concept, created by Industrial Design student, Zelig Fok.

I’m loving this design that’s curved at the front and back. It reminds me a bit of those curved Nokia concepts, but much nicer. It looks like a tasty bar of deliciousness. It looks a little thick in some places but I’m guessing were it an actual device, it won’t be that thick.

MNBScreen Shot 2012-12-16 at 08.22.10

The top and bottom change colour and can light up for notifications. Neat! No need to worry about having a yellow/green/cyan etc phone. The colour is clear when off.

The back has a sliding lens cover to help avoid camera lens smudging that can render even the likes of N8/808 pictures poor.

MNBScreen Shot 2012-12-16 at 08.21.49

The whole glass is wrap around, so no visible or palpable bezel anywhere.

Hey My Nokia Blog,
Attached is my dream nokia. I’m an industrial design student at the moment and sketched this concept up in sketchbook pro and photoshop. (I have yet to learn CAD so i cant make this like the other dream nokias featured. Also excuse the messy notes.)
Here’s the blurb behind the phone.
-Windows Phone 8 device, Havent decided on the internal specs
-Curved Gorilla Glass wrapped all around the phone for a no-bezel effect
-Ends of each phone made up of translucent plastic and will glow according to the theme color chosen in WP8. This can also be used as for notifications when the phone is in sleep: each end can glow according to a user-designated color (as illustrated in the blue highlighted bottom right sketch)
-I brought back the sliding lens cap from the N97s and back. Camera is the same pureview camera in the 808.
-Wireless charging of course, but still has the optional micro USB like the 920.
Hope you guys like it and it would be awesome to be featured on your blog.

What is MDN?

About "My Dream Nokia"

I'm sure you've dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don't you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don't need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title "My Dream Nokia" and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Cheers Zelig for the tip!

BBC: Life beyond Nokia in Finland – start up boom

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 12:47 AM PST

nokia logoThis week, the BBC published an article looking at “Life beyond Nokia” as in the up and coming start ups in Finland.

Nokia once dominated the worldwide mobile phone market but its influence has waned against strong competition in the smartphone sector. Finland’s largest company has been forced to downsize, with thousands of employees facing redundancy. Is there life beyond Nokia in Finland?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20553656

When people think of Finland, they might immediately associate it with Nokia and vice versa. Nokia, being such a huge part of Finland means it has a large reach and massive influence. In one way or another, there’s a Nokia connection somewhere. According to the BBC, over 200 startups in Finland have been created by Ex-Nokians. Jolla, a hub of talent that continues Nokia’s efforts with Maemo/MeeGo, gets a mention.

Whilst some look on to the stumbling of Nokia as a great opportunity for startups, there’s plenty of room for new companies and a return-to-form Nokia plus the benefits of a strong giant on your backyard.

Video: Writing NFC tags for Nokia Lumia 920

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 12:17 AM PST

Screen Shot 2012-12-16 at 08.10.36In this video we can see Camb078 demo a few programmable NFC tags for his Nokia Lumia 920.

Watch how they can activate apps, set destinations for directions, dial numbers etc and so much more depending on your imagination. Another tip I’ve read from our readers is duplicating NFC tags of NFC music devices. This way you can place that tag, say, on your door and pair up before even going into your room.

Some tags that are not app dependent, e.g. the BT NFC pairing one, should work on other NFC devices like the 808/C7/701/N9.
