Beauty Contest: Jessica Alba Vs. Red Lumia 920, There Are No Losers

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 11:48 AM PST

013

She’s at it again, the beautiful Jessica Alba has stolen our hearts with her Lumia adoption (although I’d still love her, even if she used an HTC!); spotted two consecutive days once in London and then in Los Angeles Jessica shows off her stunning red Lumia (to anyone who got any color other than red: HAHA! Me and Jessica Alba are now soul mates ;) ). It’s nice to see that Jessica is actually using the phone rather than being a random spokesperson who only shows it at press events or at the launch (I’m looking at you Nikki). Now all we need is for Instagram to come to WP so that Jessica can drop her iPad for good.

Apparently launching today in Mexico, here’s the Nokia Lumia 505. Cheers Anonymous for the picture! It looks quite a bit better than the renders.

We also got an update from HM that the 920 and 505 are confirmed in Chile.

I just wanted to share with you this article. There’s some firmware that confirms the arrival of the Lumia 505 and the 920 for two local operators. The 920 will be on Entel and the 505 will be on Claro, a local branch of America Móvil, which is going to take the phone all over latin america and not only Mexico as Nokia said some days ago.

Game Review: “Haunted: Dungeon of Herwood”

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 09:12 AM PST

Here’s an awesome game we covered to get you all in the spirit of Halloween (although unfortunately it took a while to get the game through the marketplace qualification so we missed the Halloween coverage). Haunted, Dungeon of Herwood is a fun level based challenge game, where the user has to collect hidden treasure and escape from the dungeon while avoiding rock golems, ghosts, skeletons, and weird flame eating purple creatures.

What really stood out for me about this game were the cute graphics, which are much improved over the sadly low standard of Windows Phone graphics (especially for Non-Xbox live games). Another awesome feature in the game is the “Map of the Month” which has a dedicated map for users to try and beat and compete against other online players by finishing the map in the fastest time possible.

Haunted: Dungeons of Herwood. An atmospheric 3D dungeon adventure where you avoid and trick monsters to survive while solving brain teasing puzzles,

but beware: while the light keeps you safe from some monsters, others are drawn to the blazing fires of your torch.

Take the role of our hero and meet a variety of gnarly monsters in 27 unique levels in this visually astonishing real-time puzzle game for Windows Phone.

Get the game here for $1.99 (free trial available): http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/haunted/ad4aa7a9-2de9-4ae2-a3d6-5b0e13be7573

Note: The development for this game has been ready for almost two months now (since Halloween) unfortunately some marketplace issues forced the developers to hold off from publishing it, so even though it’s not Halloween anymore, give it a go.

P.S. Haunted is a game developed by funding from the APPCAMPUS program at Aalto university (the same one that did the space Lumia I belive?) read more here: http://www.appcampus.fi/blog/126-first-appcampus-funded-application-released

Videos: Nokia Music promo (and creating Playlists on Nokia Music)

Oh my oh my, what a tease. Yellow Purity Pros. Anyway the video is about Nokia Music starring Dean Pattrick from Nokia.

As Spotify still isn’t at the store (: ( )I’m using Nokia Music to listen to music and it is a pretty great service, especially for music discovery. I wouldn’t have heard quite a lot of new songs I’m enjoying now had I not used it (music discovery on spotify is not as good, especially if you don’t know where to start).

I was not even aware of the playlist feature. I often just clicked genres. (I wonder why the playlists video just cuts off)

Screenshots: Nokia Lumia 920 NAM OTA Update

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 02:34 AM PST

MNBwp_ss_20121219_0004Jason has kindly shared some screenshots he’s taken from his Nokia Lumia 920 after the update became available for his device.

This is the first time OTA has been available for Windows Phone. I generally prefer to update over PC myself (just out of habit I guess) and I guess that option will be welcome to those without WiFi/Data plans. Jason says his update went without a hitch.

Hey, Jay, Jason here. Thought I’d share some screen caps with you and everyone else of the North American Market (AT&T) Update. Indeed, there is a Nokia specific
Update wrapped in there, so far I think it might just be the additional settings for sunlight legibility and brightness during battery saver mode. I still need to dig around a bit, but my impression thus far is great.

It went off without a hitch and all my content and settings were perfectly intact.  I’ll send another email when/if I notice anything else. I’m not sure how to look at the upgrade history change log and I don’t feel like this is it for updates. Zero mention of any kind of PR1.1

Cheers Jason for the tip!

Updates to things like extras, audio etc (Nokia apps) may also appear outside the update (I think my 920 was trying to push some Nokia app updates).

The New 2013 Toyota Avalon Comes with a Qi Charger Pad; Lumia Friendly

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 12:03 AM PST

Toyota 2013 Avalon Limited packs Qi wireless charging

I don’t know too much about the Toyota Avalon (wasn’t the whole Avalon line scrapped and replaced with the Aurion?); but at least they’ve gotten one thing right, the new Limited edition will come with a built in QI charging dock to juice up your 920 while driving. Unfortunately they chose to go with an iPhone in the press photos rather than a flashy yellow 920; but whatever. It’s nice to see that Qi adoption is ramping up, I know it’s been around for ages but people are starting to notice now; is this the Lumia effect?

Check out the press release below, most specifically the second to last paragraph:

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 19, 2012 – The 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited will be the first vehicle available in the world that offers in-console Qi wireless charging for Qi–enabled mobile phones and devices as part of a Technology Package, available for both the gasoline and hybrid version of the new Avalon Limited, which also includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High beams and a Pre-Collision System.

Qi is the global standard for wireless power and charging. With Qi, devices can be charged just by placing them on, or near, any Qi-enabled surface. Any Qi-enabled device works with any Qi charger, regardless of brand or manufacturer.

The Avalon’s wireless charging pad is integrated into the ebin® lid situated in vehicle’s center console. The system can be enabled by a switch beneath the lid, and charging is as simple as placing the phone upon the lid’s high-friction surface.

Supplied by DENSO, the Avalon’s wireless charging system relies on technology developed by ConvenientPower and Philips Lite-on Digital Solution (PLDS), and it will elevate the high technology experience of the new Avalon sedan.

“Pioneering the ability to charge with no wires or connectors by simply putting devices in the car console is an intuitive innovation which reflects Toyota’s continuing commitment to improve the consumer experience,” said Randy Stephens, chief engineer of Toyota Avalon. “We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch™ controls.”

Qi wireless charging is now integrated in 34 mobile phone models, including recent launches of the LG Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia 920, HTC Windows Phone 8X. Qi-certified products range from smartphones to charging pads, gaming controllers, Blu-ray Disc recorders, smartphone docking speakers, automobile phone chargers, alarm clocks and battery packs, to charging modules that can be installed in tabletops and furniture.

The new dramatically-styled 2013 Avalon arrived in showrooms the beginning of December. This new Toyota flagship sedan features improved dynamics, an athletic exterior design, and a modern yet elegant interior that surrounds occupants with premium materials and a high level of craftsmanship. This latest Avalon is also the first available with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive that offers a combined EPA-rating of 40 mpg.

But for the $42,195 price tag, I think I’ll stick to my VW.
