Apple Tries To Patent Wireless Charging as Its Own Invention

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:35 PM PST

You can count on Apple to try and patent everything that moves, which apparently also includes electricity. Apple’s latest claim to court is that it has improved on Wireless charging and should therefore be awarded a patent for its new charging method. Apple’s charging technique claims to use magnetic resonance to be able to charge devices from a distance (several feet away); effectively losing the need for the phone to be in contact with the charger.

As far as an idea goes I honestly think that it is a decent improvement and a worthwhile one, something Apple have a habit of doing, which involves waiting to see what’s “hot” in the mobile world, then adding their own touch of pzaz to it. Sometimes they actually put some work into their “innovations” (like their original app store and being one of the first capacitive touch screens), and other times it’s just a process of tactical re-branding (like Facetime).

As far as I could gather (I might be misreading this) but the company behind the inductive wireless charging, that’s seen in the 920, touchpad, GS3 and everything else that uses the Qi standard, WiPower; was later acquired by Qualcomm and Samsung as well as a bunch of other companies forming the Alliance of Wireless Power (which I can only assume have licensed the Wireless charging technology to Nokia). This Alliance also have a patent on remote wireless charging (no need for contact with a pad)- which although the patent was filed after Apple’s the conflict arises if Apple can get the rights as a separate invention, rather than one based off the inductive charging.

Regardless of who is in the wrong here, this only shows that Apple has something planned with Wireless charging, and you can bet your last dollar that they’ll advertise it a lot more than a couple online comics (regardless of how cute they are). My only hope is that Nokia can get a foothold, as the people who brought wireless charging to the masses after everyone had forgot about it, rather than ending up as a second “face-time fiasco” where half the population believed that no phone had video chat before the iPhone (when even my N73 had it).

Play 360 Bluetooth Speakers On Sale at Amazon for $119

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 11:43 AM PST

The JBL PlayUp’s predecessor the all mighty Play 360 is on sale at amazon for $119 rather than the usual $150 (interestingly this is the lowest price I could find, considering that the speakers are well over a year old, and have already been replaced they’ve held their price surprisingly well). The main advantage of the 360 over the PlayUp is the longer battery life which gives you an extra 2 hours over the JBL powered PlayUP. Personally I was planning on getting either this or the PlayUp, but now my priority is getting a wireless charger for my upcoming Lumia (I’m thinking Fatboy Charging pillow-which unfortunately isn’t available on Amazon yet).

Get the Play 360 on Amazon here:

Nokia #Switch Content: Slow learners – Nokia Lumias charge wirelessly #SwitchComics

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 09:58 AM PST

Flo from Wunderman emailed us the latest of the #SwitchComics, this time talking about the wireless/conduction charger.

It may seem like unnecessary laziness, but then again, so it a lot of the things we use just for utter, blissful convenience.

Whether on my TouchPad or now on my Nokia Lumia 920, it’s just so utterly convenient to just take the phone out and rest it on the charging pad. I don’t even have to remove the case. No picking up the charging plug which may have worn down slightly so it has to be positioned in such a way so the phone actually charges. No accidentally pulling the phone and forgetting it’s connected to the table. Sometimes I just like the fact that I’ve placed my phone on the bedside table at night, and next morning it has charged because it was resting on the Fatboy pillow. Whilst I get some sleep on my bed and recharge, so does my phone! Sometimes I’ve come home so tired I’ve not bothered to plug in the phone. It’s all very small things, but many very small things combine into a really great user experience. You can always still charge by cable, so it’s nice the option is there.

Here’s an unboxing and pics of my Nokia Lumia 920 in yellow with the yellow and blue charging pad (and pillow)

Video: Hitler Decides to Switch to Lumia 920

We’ve seen a couple of these before, like when Hitler found out about the iPhone 5; this time around Hitler finds out that he’s been deceived by Apple (like countless others) into buying an inferior product. Typical Hitler rage follows.

Whatsapp For Windows Phone Updated, Now Supports Emailing Chat History

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 07:59 AM PST

Whatsapp for Windows Phone has once again been updated, this time bringing further stability updates, faster launches and most importantly the ability to mail chat history (useful to email it too yourself as an archive). unfortunately the ability to transfer your chat history or sync online is not yet available, but hopefully it’ll come soon.

Also worth noting is that the ability to stay connected to WiFi when the screen was locked, which came in the previous Whatsapp update is no longer available; meaning anyone without a data plan should probably sit this one out if they value their push notifications.

Vote for Nokia Lumia 920 (84.45% current votes) or Nokia 808 PureView in Gizmodo Awards

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 05:54 AM PST

Gizmodo (au) have a poll where you can vote for your favourite phone. Two Nokias are in the mix, Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia Lumia 920.

Nokia Lumia 920 currently leads with 84.45%.  You can vote either for the 808 or 920, but voting 920 would ensure the Nokia would take this poll. It’s just a bit of fun, but nice recognition on the internet.

iPhone Fangirl’s verdict on the Nokia Lumia 920 WP8

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 05:45 AM PST

Quick heads up as I’m stuck somewhere with no signal and no WiFi access (barely able to post this :( )

Mashable’s Christina Warren, self confessed Apple Fan Girl has been taking the Nokia Lumia 920 for a spin to see how she’ll cope on WP8.

Rather accurate and fair review. Kudos.

Video: PhotoBeamer for Nokia Lumia (WP8)

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 11:17 PM PST

I was planning to demo the PhotoBeamer app after Ali posted about it but my schedule got a bit tight last week.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/11/30/nokia-announces-photobeamer-instantly-share-photos-on-any-screen/

Fortunately, there’s already a video demo of PhotoBeamer, Nokia’s share on any screen photo app.

First up, installation is by the QR codes. Simple.

Next, go on PhotoBeamer.com and scan that QR Code with the app open. You’ll then see options to open albums. Without any set up, any special TV receiving devices, specific WiFi connections etc, your pictures will appear on the screen that was on PhotoBeamer.

It’s basically uploading your pictures but the swipe delay between photos feels like it’s a local over the air thing, as can be seen in the live demo below. Larger pictures may take a longer time to upload initially but once done, swiping is at a similar speed. You can only view the pictures, there’s no zooming in on a photo.

I’ll try and demo this myself.
