Pocket Now’s basket of tricks for better Lumia 1020 photography

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 03:37 PM PDT

The folks at Pocket Now are not winding down when it comes to the Lumia 1020, yesterday they shared their editors thoughts about the Lumia 1020, and the day before that was no exception.

Two days ago Adam Z Lein posted a lengthy article titled: How to take incredible photos with the Nokia Lumia 1020, and may I say it lives up to the title.

The article starts off explaining manual settings then goes on to show some tricks in almost every photo taking situation including low light, action, scenery and even bracketed HDRs.

Some of those tricks were down right awesome much like this one:

lowlightwithflashWP_20130804_20_52_07_Pro-420x314[1]

With a very slow 0.3 second shutter, I turn the flash on. The OIS keeps absorbing background light for a longer time while the flash freezes the forground subject. In the case of the rooftop club photo above, the entire lower left side of the image was dark, but since I had a slow shutter, the flash lit up the entire area and was able to balance the exposure with the brighter sunset in the background. In the second photo, using automatic mode with the flash on, Mary would have been exposed correctly, but you wouldn't see a background. With the flash off, you would have seen the sunset background, but only a dark silhouette of Mary. By combining the slow shutter with image stabilization and a flash, I was able to get a nice exposure of both Mary and the background sunset.

But as interesting the rest of the article is the conclusion is just the best thing to say about the Lumia 1020:

You can pixel peep all you want and criticize noise levels, blown-out highlights, accurate color reproduction, etc., but as mentioned in the beginning, incredible photography is all about communicating emotion to your viewers.  That's the most important thing, and when it comes to smartphones with cameras built in, the Nokia Lumia 1020 gives you the widest range of tools and capabilities to create those incredible photos that clearly communicate those amazing emotions you may experience in real life.

But hey don’t take my word for it, check out the real article here

If you do own a Lumia 1020 we’d love to get a taste in the comments section, thanks for reading…

Lumia 1020 Coming to Three UK Below £600

One of our sources has let us know that the Lumia 1020 has received an initial pricing at Three UK and has been listed in both yellow and black. Although the pricing above lists it at £600 we’re told that there will be some in store discounts and promotions that will bring the price closer to £500 (off contract of course). Multiple other sources have pinged the 1020′s launch for early September in Europe (Similar to how the 925 hit the stores a week or two before the 1020 was announced- keep in mind there’s supposed to be a late September event).

So what do you guys think is ~£ 500 too much for the 1020? Just right? And of course if they don’t happen to carry the white color is that a deal breaker?

Lumiappdates: 6Sec Vine app gets updated, new look and semantic zoom.

Previous notification indicating issue

Hey guys, the Vine app for WP just got updated. V1.1.0.1, 13/08/13. You may have noticed a notification from developer Rudy Huyn (also the creator of the Instagram supported Instagram app, still in beta) that Vine had changed some APIs. Rudy had already submitted a fix and was just waiting for store approval.

The issue I had was clicking on profiles closed the app (though the sound would finish playing in the background – I wonder if that could be a feature someday for videos to play audio in the background?).

Anyway, there’s also new feature – semantic zoom whereby from the main feed, you can zoom in and out to see all the thumbnails. The transition is quite nice.

Video: How to: Get improved US Windows Phone Bing Search features in the UK for your Nokia Lumia

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 09:53 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-13 at 17.47.23I was talking to Ali and Michael over Whatsapp a while ago where they were telling me about the swipe left gesture in the Bing app that they had. Now, I didn’t know what they heck they were talking about as it wasn’t on my 920 or 925.

This video explains everything. Their Bing Search was set to US (or perhaps another country that would allow that). Mine was set on UK.

The language need not change. Go to Settings>Language+Region>Browser+Search Language (English United States).

No need to press back as instructed in the video you can press the Bing button straight away. The additions seem quite useful given the relatively minor use I give to that Bing button. You get cool things like local stuff/offers, in headlines, what’s in the cinema – and they do work for my area at least (and not simply stuck to US).

Video: Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac demoed with Nokia Lumia 1020

Last week we talked about Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac which you can download here.

Mark from thenokiablog has a demo of how it looks with his 1020. He likes the app but wishes there would be some check boxes to make it easier to select photos (as opposed to either selecting all, or pressing command and select which are demoed).

Note how the pictures are labelled by what app took them, e.g. ProCam.

Another Hilarious 925 Low-Light Advert, Bring it to TV!!

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 07:35 AM PDT

DSC03184Nokia have released quite  few surprisingly good low light adverts for the Lumia 925 recently, including one pitting it against the iPhone; well here’s another pretty funny one titled “Night time photos you’ll actually want to share”:

I found the video really funny, even funnier that it’s not in english for some reason; either way pretty awesome huh? Why isn’t this on TV.

Check out this video from Nokia Pakistan’s facebook. It’s a song featuring Nokia and the Nokia tune and stars famous TV artists in Pakistan as well as Jawad Ahmed who produced the song. Note the Asha handsets making appearances in the video.

“See how easily Nokia Life is changing daily lives of people in Pakistan. Hit ‘Like’ if you are humming along the tune.” said Nokia Pakistan Facebook Page.

Nokia Pakistan with one of the Top singers “Jawad Ahmed” produced this song. The faces you will be watching in this Nokia-Music-Video are some of the Super Top Tv Artists. Those who will not be able to understand the lyrics will still love the tune I believe.

And of course the video also shows number of Nokia low-end and Asha sets.

Cheers Munir for the tip!
