Sweet Smell of Success, Windows Phone is Latin America’s 2nd Most Popular Mobile OS!!!

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 02:55 PM PDT

DSC02888While some people insist on debating whether or not Windows Phone has achieved the “third OS”  against BlackBerry, Windows Phone has been making some huge leaps in Latin America (namely Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Columbia). Windows Phone has made some giant leaps, seeing as it was still 4th place last quarter, but with over 12% growth this past quarter it is now ahead of iOS but still behind Android. Columbia is one of the countries with the highest Windows Phone adoption rate, taking up 25.6% of the market share!

Microsoft had set their eyes on becoming the number two mobile OS in the region by the end of 2013, but achieved the goal 5 months earlier says the director of WP Latin America, Liliana González:

"during this year's Mobile World Congress, we set ourselves the goal of being the second most widely used mobile platform in Latin America by the end of 2013, and we are overjoyed to be able to announce that these reports show that we have achieved this five months before the end of the year."

This is definitely excellent news for the WP OS as well as Nokia who have a more than commanding lead with 86.9% of the OS to call its own. Now if only North America would follow suite eh?

Both follow the similar design of the 105 with Lumia-esque colors and polycarbonate build material.  The phones run your standard S30 (I assume?) and have the usual stopwatch, clock, snake, calendar, radio and more.

The Nokia 107 is a dual sim variant with a micro SD card slot (up to 16 gb) to help listen to more music, which brings us to the music playback times; which clocks in at 34.8 hours! That’s almost a day and a half!

Nokia 107 has a MP3 player, Micro SD card memory can be extended up to 16G, storing 3000 songs to mention, music playback time is up to 34.8 hours, than the average MP3 is also durable, so you can enjoy a private trip music stations.

The standby times are also impressive, as is standard for Nokia’s feature phone set:

Nokia 106 standby time of up to 35 days, the Nokia 107 up to 24 days.

The phones have a suggested retail price of $23 and $25 respectively (the 105 had a suggested retail price of $20), with expected arrival in Q3 2013 to China (with no details on worldwide availability yet).

Nokia 106 suggested retail price of $ 23, the Nokia 107 is $ 25 (excluding taxes and subsidies). Both phones are expected in the third quarter.

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:33 AM PDT

AmberQuick heads up guys, the Verizon Lumia 822 has started receiving the Lumia Amber/GDR2 update, so if you happen to have an 822 be sure to check if it’s available. In other news my Lumia 920 (UK country variant) still hasn’t received the update, but the status has been changed to “Coming soon” rather than waiting for approval, so hopefully it’ll come out within the next few days.

You can check the status of your device’s upgrade on this page here: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/availability-in-europe/

Nokia continues to take over WP at 86.9%, Lumia 1020 exceeding Lumia 928 sales

Posted: 21 Aug 2013 04:41 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-21 at 12.31.17

Quick heads up on some data by adduplex. First, Nokia’s continuing to dominate the WP scene. Yes it’s still small but it’s obviously still growing too (in line with market so that the sales increase in Q2 also meant a marketshare increase). Now, Nokia commands 86.9% of WP versus 85% last month (still, relatively excellent considering some of  initial naysayers indicating that Nokia would have a hard time against HTC/Sammy).

Moreover, sales of the first few weeks of the 1020  (on AT&T only) have been compared with that of the 928 (which sold relatively well at Verizon) and the 1020 is outselling the 928.

65% of handsets are now WP8. vs 35% WP7. 57% of devices are the 512MB variety.

In India, Nokia Lumia 520 has a 36% chunk out of all WP, with 34% in Thailand. Amazingly, the 710 has 51.3% share in Argentina

There were also some other interesting findings from adduplex on potential future devices being logged. More in the sources.

Video: Nokia HERE 3D Maps Refresh with Gen 2 mapping car

Chris Davies from SlashGear takes a look at the latest generation cars that Nokia’s HERE Maps division is using to update their 3D data.

This features an updated laser and panoramic rig. We see an app that has an algorithm designed to give directions to the driver to get the best coverage whilst reducing redundancy.

Look how cool it looks when it converts all that data into 3D.
