Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac – easily transfer pics from your Lumia

The Windows Phone connector for mac isn’t exactly the most fun thing to use. Either you let iPhoto swipe your photos or you use that app to slowly sync photos or to painstakingly browse photos.

Back in Finland a couple of weeks ago I mentioned this to the Nokia peeps who recommended that I use this Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac, which then turns out, wasn’t apparently available or announced yet. Haha.

Now I can write about it since it’s now public. Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac!

I normally don’t bother with cables when I’m at home or at a reliable WiFi source since everything gets pushed through SkyDrive. But when travelling, WiFi isn’t always available (and no WiFi direct).

You can get your pics from Smartshoot, Cinemagraph, Smart Camera and ProCamera.

You can download it here:

Ideally, like on my Windows PC, I could just drag and drop like an external HDD.

Video: Nokia – Lumia 925 – Ad – Better Photos Every Day, ‘take better photos than iPhone’

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 11:06 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-05 at 18.57.12

I’m certain I’ve seen the last screenshot somewhere in a different Nokia video (way to sleep deprived to go check atm) but this one captures my attention more. Possibly due to the narration that explains what’s going on, and the clear comparisons.

The low light could have been further exaggerated by having something in extreme low light where you would not see a thing on the iPhone 5.

The first thing you hear is how ‘more photos are taken on an iPhone’ (even with all the other Nokia basic phones?) and I immediately shuddered at the thought of mentioning the competitor. However, the angle Nokia is taking is that Nokia prefers to take better pictures, and this is shown shot after shot after shot.

I love SmartCam!

Can you imagine how Nokia should position the Nokia Lumia 1020? I want to hear the praises from all the reviews. Best Darn camera phone in the world!!!!!! Get Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson to narrate it.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Informational Video and a few personal observations.

Dear MNB Readers,

As some of you may know, I received my very own 1020 last week (pictured above) and since then, I have been capturing photos and videos whenever I get a chance. The Lumia 1020 is very flexible as a camera and there are a lot possibilities and situations that you can capture with the 1020 that you may have never thought about capturing or may have not been able to capture before with your previous smartphone (808 included).

With that in mind, I would like to share a well put together video from AT&T that shows some of the exciting photography centric capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 1020.

YouTube Link: http://youtu.be/XqY–K2ap8s

The Lumia 1020 will change the way you view mobile photography forever.

I would also like to share a few videos and photos that I took with the 1020 on my SECOND day with the device. Please view the videos in 720p if possible.

WP_20130801_18_00_32_Pro

The reason for the emphasis above on the word second is to show that in only 2 days with the 1020, without much effort, without mastering Pro Cam, I was able to capture stunning videos and photos. In my opinion, these 3 videos are well above what I have been able to capture with my 808 during it’s half a year in my hands.

What is special about the photo above? Well, the special thing is something that you cannot see….I was WALKING when I took this photo!!! Walking…did not stop….the camera was shaking, I didn’t frame the shot, walking…did I mention I was walking? I wasn’t walking TOWARD the lettering but rather to going to the left. I was simply passing by yet the letters on the wall are in focus and crisp. The second generation OIS in the 1020 delivers most of the time and can be REALLY impressive.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 really enables great photography and videography for anyone that can see past the price and any OS biases. The end result of having an open mind concerning the Nokia Lumia 1020 are many moments filled with visual treats. More to come as the days and weeks go by but for now you can find more pictures and videos on my Flickr and YouTube pages.

Thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog and have a great day!

Bing for Windows Phone gets updated, you might want to use it now

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:05 AM PDT

Bing search just got a massive improvement on its results providing relatively better search results

in a post on Windows Phone blog Michaele Stroh writes about the changes to Bing search in detail and I really like few of the changes  so I’ll quote a few:

  • Smarter end results specially in the Web tab

The new Web category, for example, is designed to be smart enough to show whatever's most relevant to your search, including images, videos, and local results (check out the screenshots below). "We're gonna put more info on your first search result screen," Saydalikhodjayev says. This also means less swiping on your part, he notes. The Bing team has also worked to improve the freshness of the service's local results and made it easier to get things like directions and phone numbers for local businesses.

  • Improved Images and Videos search.

There are other upgrades. The new Images and Videos categories now support infinite scrolling. Images also received a design makeover that brings larger, auto-sized thumbnails. Here's how it looks:

pizza

before you only had access to 10 pics to flick though them in full screen ,now you’ll have infinite pictures to swipe through, this will surely make it fun for people obsessed with memes to navigate an endless sea of them.

  • Less on data more on info

Finally, some under-the-hood tweaks were designed to make Bing deliver results faster on your phone and gobble up less data—a big deal in the era of carrier caps. Saydalikhodjayev says that's because, post update, your phone downloads results only for the default Web view. Images and Videos are populated on demand if you swipe over to them.

  • More instant answers

Instant Answers are one of my favorite Bing features—and they're an especially big time saver on a phone. They save you from having to open other apps or navigate away from the search result page.

The new update brings 10 Instant Answers available on the PC to the phone, including traffic, flight status, exchange rates, word definitions and translations, and more. For example, search for "Define Awesome" to get the dictionary definition right there on the search results page. Or "USD JPY" to find out how the US Dollar is doing against the Yen. Here's how they look:

  • More at a glance info for US only

Last year Bing introduce a web feature called Snapshot, which provides information at-a-glance about people, places, or things, so you can quickly find what you're searching for. Now that same capability is coming to Windows Phone 8 in the U.S.

Qualcomm shows off metal Lumia looking Nokia tablet with 16 camera sensors? Lytro-style? With Android or Windows?

Remember the imaging company that Nokia bought invested in, Pelican Imaging?

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/06/19/video-pelican-imaging-3d-video-with-3d-model-print-function-as-well-as-lytro/

http://www.pelicanimaging.com/news/press-releases/pelican_seriesc.html

Pelican Imaging, the inventor of groundbreaking array camera technology for mobile devices, has announced the closing of $20M in Series C funding. New strategic investors include Qualcomm Incorporated, acting through its venture investment group, Qualcomm Ventures, and Nokia Growth Partners, and the round includes existing venture investors Globespan Capital Partners, Granite Ventures, InterWest Partners and IQT.

One of the interesting capabilities is the Lytro-style camera which uses 16 sensors to capture depth at every point so you can refocus afterwards.

Look what Qualcomm is talking about in their promo video for the powerful S800 processor. You can see that it looks like a large Lumia, no?

Qualcomm is working along with a ‘partner’ to produce advanced imaging capabilities that make the most of the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. ‘This’ device has a 4×4 imaging array that enables 16 individual sensors. Here we can change the point of focus AFTER the image has been captured.

Screen Shot 2013-08-05 at 17.17.34Erm..owned invested in by Nokia:

The only thing that might confuse is that in other demoes it has Android. Perhaps, as suggested in the tip, it could be to hide the OS? Or is Nokia making a Droid tablet? Or quite simply could it be not Nokia at all? But then again, what about the specific imaging gear? Has another company licensed this tech from Pelican prior to Nokia’s purchase? (Like the Face Swap thing in BB10 from Nokia owned Scalado)

MNB Screen Shot 2013-08-05 at 17.27.43 nokia tablet

Is that a light up button on the bezel? Possibly the Windows button?

go to camera tricks video = BOOM! instant Nokia rumored Tablet :D

Reason:
- the video shows the 800 processor is capable of handling an array of 4×4 individual camera sensors.

- the Iconic (flat on top & bottom, curved on both sides) design from Nokia is seen on the tablet. plus aluminum body.

-  skinned the software (looks like android) to hide the actual OS. (just a hunch)

Take note he says:

“Qualcomm is working along with a PARTNER to produce advanced imaging capabilities…”

…I wonder who?

This maybe the next version of PureView, an umbrella name for Nokia’s attempts at pushing imaging rather than one particular technique.

Cheers drexter for the tip!

Amber or GDR2 for Lumia 920 is out via pc update.

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:28 AM PDT

Before Nokia cut access to its servers Nokia users could download software updates that weren’t due for months, this however was changed earlier this year, but users still force certain updates using Nokia’s updating software.
Earlier today Nokia pushed the GDR2 update for Lumias on their servers which meant we could actually download and flash the update easily.

and today it happened you can flash your Lumia 920 right now using this app which as it turns out the easiest one yet

software updater for retail

gdr2

back up your apps and contacts run the Nokia software updater follow the course of the app

if the update available is named  3047.0000.1326.2002

then this is Amber; or GDR2 and you should able to download and install it.
“this is a clean update so beware. :)

ABxXkQR[1]

as always please understand that flashing your phone even through Nokia software can void your warranty.

Thanks for the tip @alocom from mobile4arab.com

Steve Litchfield AAWP Reviews the Nokia Lumia 1020 camera

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:06 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-05 at 16.58.56

Here’s a rather in depth look at the camera from the Symbian maestro, Steve Litchfield, who also writes for AAWP as well as AAS.

http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/reviews/item/18067_Nokia_Lumia_1020-the_camera.php

Even with the issues listed though, I was very impressed by the Lumia 1020 – it’s a tantalisingly slick piece of engineering. There’s no denying that the 1020 does take the PureView vision behind the Nokia 808 and extend it – a few options and subtleties have been lost in the transition from Symbian to Windows Phone, but the end result is most of the power of the original system on a much more future proof hardware platform, and with some rather clever lateral thinking thrown in as well.

Steve highlights a few issues he encountered which given the initial exclusivity for AT&T on the 1020, might benefit global consumers when they get their 1020 possibly with updates.

Overall he’s very impressed with the camera. His last post comparing the 1020 against the 808, S4 Zoom and 925 caused quite a bit of discussion here. Hopefully this post explains his findings.

Press Release: HERE delivers precise indoor location content to Qualcomm

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 05:21 AM PDT

Qualcomm IZat employs HERE Venue Maps to improve indoor positioning for location-based apps

Espoo, Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, today announced that it will make available its indoor Venue Maps to Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. Leveraging indoor map data from HERE that is tightly coupled to the core indoor positioning engine will help Qualcomm IZat(TM) location technologies deliver more precise positioning (within 3-5 meters) to mobile devices inside buildings. Improving the overall indoor location experience for consumers, this combination is expected to accelerate the development and use of compelling location-based experiences as well as promotions in shopping malls, transportation hubs and entertainment venues around the globe.

“In our quest to deliver location awareness everywhere, Qualcomm Atheros is propagating indoor location capabilities to ensure the best possible experiences in a wide variety of places,” said Cormac Conroy, vice president of the mobile, computing and location business unit at Qualcomm Atheros. “Our collaboration with HERE complements the capabilities of our IZat location platform to deliver the exceptional accuracy that is required for businesses and app developers looking for ways to reach mobile consumers and create additional revenue opportunities from location-based services.”

To map buildings, HERE mapmakers visit venues from airports to zoos to sports complexes, museums and other facilities around the world to ensure map data is precise and no detail is forgotten. They collect building floor plans and then validate against the real world which includes double-checking the names of points of interest and ensuring that rich features such as ATM machines, restrooms and escalators are included.

“Indoor spaces are among the new frontiers in mapping and HERE is uniquely positioned to bring its global leadership in outdoor mapping to inside venues,” said Cliff Fox, senior vice president of Location Content at HERE. “Not only have we been the first to map some of the most recognized buildings in the world, but we also offer the world’s broadest coverage of indoor spaces with currently more than 9,000 venues consisting of 50,000 unique buildings mapped in 69 countries. With our continuously expanding reach in coverage and focus on efforts to improve accuracy, we can support Qualcomm Atheros in its quest to provide access to accurate location information and services to consumers as they move about venues.”

Venue Maps complement Qualcomm Atheros’ end-to-end IZat indoor positioning capabilities to deliver always-on location awareness to mobile devices in more places. IZat is comprised of Qualcomm Atheros’ broad technology portfolio, including cellular, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), Wi-Fi, sensor and cloud-based assistance solutions, as well as its widely deployed location core, already found in more than one billion devices on mobile networks worldwide.

Cheers Otto for the tip!
