Video: Instagram for Windows Phone with 6tag, demo of insta-video

Unlike other third party Instagram applications, 6tag is said to be supported by Instagram. It’s pretty cool to see 6tag on video demoed by Michael Fisher as I wasn’t aware of the other cool stuff it did, despite having downloaded it yesterday morning.

6tag has more filters on top of the official instagram filters as well as the ability to upload video.

You can also see it next to Instance.

Chris Weber said to confirm Instagram for Nokia Lumia WP; Nokia’s aims for taking Samsung’s top spot

BangkokPost has been speaking to Nokia’s Chris Weber who has spilled the beans on Instagram for WP.

Not that Nokia Geeks like us care since we have various alternatives (the most recent to the store being the awesome 6tag) but for regular Joe, having the official app there may be comforting. Plus it’s an easier sell to say “yes, it has instagram” vs “yes you can publish on instagram using these other apps”.

The post is prevocatively titled, “Nokia plots to take Samsung’s top spot”. A few years ago, the reverse was said by Samsung of Nokia. A comeback of such magnitude whilst theoretically not impossible is unlikely at this point. But we can all hope and it’s always good to aim high eh? :p

GDR3 coming with notification centre and “Appetite”?

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 01:23 PM PDT

notification centre

not the actual notification centre, just for thumbnail purposes

It’s there, it isn’t there, who knows? TO the dismay of Nokia Lumia fans, the notification centre that MS said they were working on but didn’t implement in time for WP8 was supposedly pushed back to Blue instead of GDR3. But now it’s supposedly there again according to tests being undertaken on GDR3 in India.

We have more to add ourselves as we heard through whispers whilst in New York from “people in the know” whilst complaining about Notification centre to “Watch out for October”.

Now with a Nokia event expected at the end of September, it would be good timing to announce some GDR3 devices. I’m not sure if there’s been a concrete date yet for the GDR3 announcement but I guess Nokia can’t be showing GDR3 goodness before its released.

What could the “appetite” feature be?

How to take the perfect photo with less shots & Nokia Pro Cam

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 01:19 PM PDT

Digital Photography is hard, it involves so many hardware & software inconsistencies that make learning it, a very time consuming job.

Luckily Nokia’s hardware is the best out there for “mobile” digital photography so the rest will be up to the software or what Nokia calls it:

Nokia Pro Cam:

2112-11e07629_680_400[1]

It comes preloaded on the Lumia 1020 and just got released to all Lumia 92x phones that have the “Amber/GDR2″ update and it is a huge step toward making digital photography easier.

Procamlumia920

Its UI is easy and very cooperative with lots of tricks that make the experience a lot more easier, an interactive manual for every setting is available right in the app with a handy dictionary explaining photography jargon to get you started.

manual focus

But even with Nokia Pro Cam’s ability to preview end results, and its cute little red warnings that your picture may become ruined.
It might still be over whelming for some to get the best shot of their subjects, and this is where this article comes into play through this step by step procedure:

  1. Take a photo in Auto mode, personally I discourage using flash, focus assist comes in handy if you’re shooting a night time closeup but otherwise its useless and irritating to everyone.
  2. Be sure to use a Framing Grid, the option is located at “…” > Settings > Framing Grid. Rule of thirds is a very attractive grid and its the most recommended.
  3. In this procedure we’ll take two or more shots so when you frame your shot make sure to use the grid as a frame of reference for the next shot (so you wouldn’t get a different scene in the next photo)
  4. Don’t go for subject-less shots almost no one wants to look at your backyard for the sake of it, your subject doesn’t have to be beautiful but it has to be a little bit meaningful.
  5. Examine the reasons why you hate the picture? too much light? underexposed? too blurry? too noisy?screwed up colors? and so on.
  6. Open that photo in Nokia Pro Cam, and click on the 3 dots “…” then choose “PICTURE INFO”
  7. Look for two values in particular : Shutter Speed, ISO.
  8. Open Nokia Pro Cam and take a new picture using the same settings auto suggested and then change the value related to your problem to your liking.  (Don’t use auto mode again in the next picture instead mimic the data found in your picture info. because auto mode can spit out different results)

Over exposed

Solving common problems:

  • If your photo turned out blurry let the shutter speed be faster eliminating the chances of hand shakes. ( don’t change values radically a 1/8 shutter speed is very different from a 1/4 shutter speed.)

cameratest

  • If your photo is very dark and/or noisy try putting some effort in a home made rig that holds your phone still, Nokia thought of your input shaking the camera so it made a delayed shutter button option Nokia Pro Cam > … > Shutter delay. This way you could set the shutter time for 4s without creating unwanted shadows or light trails.

4 sec

  • If you want a long exposure photo (traffic light trails) but there’s too much street light your picture could become over exposed, use the lowest ISO setting possible, to have a darker result use a sun glasses over the lens to reduce the light even further.

LowerISO replacement

  • If your problem is an over exposed portion of the pic try leaving all the settings the same as auto but dial down exposure compensation. (works great for shooting the moon and other light based subjects like city lights.)
  • If your subject isn’t standing out in your picture, use the same settings but with manual focus, and if you have too many subjects just use the infinity focus (its the infinity sign in the manual focus dial) this mode will work great for group/kids photo setting because you’ll not have to wait for a focus lock.

Photo taken with #Lumia920 , using Proshot , Manual focus. :)

  • If you want extreme close up use the manual focus dial and try not to move your phone out of focus by accident.

2012_09_01_09_00_17_ProShot

  • If your daylight pictures are a little blurry for your liking, make sure to use (infinity) in your manual focus dial, also try  to limit your handshakes and use a very fast shutter speed.
    Infinity focus
  • If colors are not accurate change the white balance to the most accurate setting.
  • If you want to create an amazing long shutter image with your friends consider forcing flash to get your friends body (the room should be dark) and then let him go crazy with a light source anything from a led light to a full light saber. ( this way you get your friend’s pic and the cool light effects with it)Proshot 's magic. :) 4secs exposure ...
  • Try to take advantage of your miss advantage in some situations, some neat stuff pics could be had by being a little bit creative
    paint
  • CLEAN YOUR LENS, solves most problems specially at night.

Disclaimer: All the photos above were taken in a pre-amber Lumia 920, they were taken using Proshot App which has almost all of the advantages the Nokia Pro Cam offers now and some more too.
If you’re interested in the full versions of the above pictures click here.
I’ll try to answer any photography questions in the comments to the best of my ability and if the question is hard but interesting enough, I’ll try pass it on to some friends who do know what they’re talking about.

Thanks for reading and have a good day.

Video: Finnish Marching Band filmed on Nokia Lumia 925

They’re all so very blond and blue eyed

I found this clip on my laptop of a Marching band that appeared whilst we were in Helsinki. The sound quality is pretty awesome and that stabilisation is working a treat for a hand held video (it’s so steady!).

This reminds me that I’ve still got tonnes of videos from the 925 on the day we went to Suomenlinna, Sea Fortress. They’re on my external hard drive which I haven’t got at the moment (swiping some library WiFi cos my three SIM is a waste of money getting zero internet).

There was a funny incident actually the day before when we thought there was a statue (dressed similarly like the guys above) standing outside a building. At first we thought it was real but as we got closer, the face looked too perfect/shiny and concluded it was a statue. Jason and I ran to it for a photo op only for the armed statue to strike a defensive STOP position. Holy Moly that was a scare and a half! Everyone else found our shock and wussiness hilarious.

Enrique Iglesias thanks Nokia for their support in Turn the Night up Video starring Lumia 925

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 19.15.06Famous pop star/celeb and also son of Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias’ Fan Page on Facebook which has 32M fans, sends a thanks message out to Nokia for their support in the ‘Turn the Night Up” video where you spotted the Nokia Lumia 925.

Hopefully that ‘support’ did not cost too much, though it’s always worth getting yourself out there in placements. 1020 ones would be awesome due to that stellar 41mp camera that none of the competition offers.

Video: Nokia HERE Maps bringing Map Data to life – improving road safety

Here’s Myriam Joire looking at how Nokia brings HERE Maps data to life. Check out how Nokia can use this data to work out breaking points of cars as they take bends in roads, which can be used to improve safety on the road.

The company’s researchers are also using anonymous smartphone, PND and even CAN bus data to further our understanding of traffic flow and driver behavior in different conditions. Beyond improving maps and navigation, the goal is to make our roads better and cars smarter.

Here’s another post showing Nokia HERE Maps taking data on board in a different way from their own vehicles.

Here’s a post about Here Maps coming to life with living cities.

Don’t Fight, Switch to Lumia Part II

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 07:01 AM PDT

A while back Microsoft made a video advert that went viral, pitting Android fans against Apple lovers at a wedding reception. Well they’ve done it again, this time at a school play (with slightly less violence), but once again it’s pretty damn funny!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2vR4LeL0yzE

What do you guys think? Is this another viral video in the making?
