NaviFirm+ 2.0 Released – Allows Firmware Downloads Once Again

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:19 PM PDT

To any Symbian, Maemo or MeeGo-Harmattan user, NaviFirm was the best tool, for being able to install updated firmware for your Nokia device. Lumia owners then got to join in briefly, until the service was pulled earlier this year, when Nokia did some server side encryption and what not.

It seems, thanks to some rather persistent folk, the service has been restored, and is available in the form of NaviFirm + 2.0. The download is free, yet to use it, you need to donate a small amount (3 Euros), which will give you an account.

NaviFirm+ 2.0 Change-Log:
- New: NaviFirm+ automatically downloads and installs new updates
- New: Engine Rewritten from scratch
- New: Favourites Product Codes list
- Improved: trasfer speed! network communication is gzip-compressed
- Improved: caching policy is handled by the server, you don’t need to worry about cleaning the cache to get fresh results
- Improved: refuses to add duplicated files to the download queue
- Improved: minor GUI improvements
- Removed: ShowExtendedInfo and ServerIndex settings
- Known Issues: doesn’t support proxy. Proxy support will be added in next releases.

Nokia Flagship Store Helsinki Nokia Lumia 925 launch (preparation in Window)

MNB WP_20130814_002925 HELSINKI

So what’s going on at the Nokia Flagship Store in Helsinki?

Although we were told that the staff wouldn’t comment, the window displays are filled with the Nokia Lumia 925.

What’s Wednesday May 15th supposed to be? I can’t quite make out the other word.

Interestingly despite the 925 being available in the US, UK and several other countries, it’s hasn’t been available in Finland (possibly launch tomorrow). Neither apparently is the 501 and of course, not the 1020 (which is not available anywhere except AT&T USA).

Cheers rosstek for the tip!

Rumours: Nokia Lumia 825 5.2″ Quadcore ‘budget’ phablet, with Dual SIM and QuickCharge

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 06:53 AM PDT

Nokia Phablet

A while back we were treated to some rumours that indicated a whole list of new upcoming Nokia phones with big, big screens.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/07/06/rumour-nokia-zoom-on-tablets-too-slim-aluminium10-58-5-tablets-on-the-way-lumias-getting-bigger-too-525-725-825-926

There’s more information now corroborating the existence of the Nokia Lumia 825, a potential new Quadcore Phablet with Adreno 305 GPU from Nokia with 5.2″ screen. It would feature a 720p screen too (less than the 920 unless it’s 1080p and 720 is all that’s showing up)

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 14.43.30

The ‘budget’ bit is intriguing. Like the 625 and the 520 and the 620, they are providing high end experiences at competitive prices. Another interesting info is dual sim and whatever quick charge 1.0 is meant to be .

ETA? If MS ships GDR3 on time possibly October. If not then December.

Gartner: Microsoft Has Become the No. 3 Smartphone OS Overtaking BlackBerry (WP)

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 05:10 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 13.01.00

Just reiterating the results, WP is the third smartphone OS now after Android and iOS.

Gartner’s numbers show 7,407,000 units for WP (versus IDC’s 8.7M) of ‘sales’ to end users.

As well as increasing in sales unit volume, to increase in market share, the sales volume increase must be inline with the rest of the market.

  • WP 2.6% to 3.3% 4.039M units to 7.4M units.
  • BlackBerry 5.2% to 2.7%, 7.991M units to 6.18M units.
  • Symbian went from 9M units (5.9%) to 0.63M units (0.3%)
  • iOS went from 18.8% to 14.2%, despite unit volume increase from 28.935m to 31.899M.
  • Android went from 64.2% to 79% with 98.664M units to 177.898M units.

WP’s growth, whilst slow, is still showing growth.  Nokia’s entry level units are said to be a hit and we may see even more progress for Q3. In contrast, BB are considering several options of which one is to sell the company.

Electro-Tactile Keypad and Support Kickstand Patents Surface, Paving the Way for the Inevitable Nokia Tablet?

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:40 AM PDT

US20130120265A1-20130516-D00000

The history of Nokia tablet rumors is long and painful, most notably we’ve recently seen pictures of what is supposed to be a cancelled Nokia tablet, before that we heard detailed rumors of a very surface-like device with a built in keyboard/kickstand. Let’s not forget the recent benchmark appearance of the RX-114 a supposed Quad-core RT tab. Adding strength to an upcoming Nokia launch would be two more patents published earlier this year, one for a Kickstand like “apparatus” and the other for an electo-tactile responsive keyboard, both the perfect accessories to match a tablet.

The Electrotactile feedback patent (and more design art) can be found here:

http://www.google.com/patents/US20130120265?dq=keys+electrotactile+top+surfaces&hl=en&sa=X&ei=5mgLUriJFoWD2gWEqoGgBA&ved=0CAUQ6AEwAA

An apparatus including a keypad, pressure sensors and electrotactile feedback electrodes. The keypad includes a plurality of keys. Each of the keys has a topsurface. The pressure sensors are located under the top surfaces of the keys. The electrotactile feedback electrodes are located at the top surfaces of the keys.

The Apparatus stand here:

http://www.google.com/patents/US20130187023

An apparatus including a housing; and a stand connected to the housing. The stand is configured to cooperate with the housing for the housing and the stand to support the apparatus on a surface. The stand is movable on the housing between a retracted position and an extended position. In the retracted position the stand is substantially flat against the housing. In the extended position the stand projects from the housing with a general triangular shape.

It’s a safe bet to assume that Nokia won’t release a tablet on it’s own, it’s sure to have at least a couple accessories or distinguishing hardware features (more Surface-y than iPad-ish), the only question is when will we see Nokia’s first tablet? My money’s on a RT tab this september (the 26th?).

New qi Wireless Charger Dt-601 Shows Up With USB Powering

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 03:50 AM PDT

d4ccccea15ce36d32efc7ce03bf33a87eb50b1e4With the Lumia 920 launch Nokia announced several wireless charging accessories, including the wireless charging pad (DT-900), it seems that accessory is up for a refresh soon. The sketch design/blueprint (what are these called?) shows a smaller more compact circular design with a diameter of 6.5 CM apparently capable of charging form a USB port (similar to the QIMini we reviewed before).

DT-601, visual diameter d = 6.5 cm.
And seemingly dedicated input from the original oversized 12V/0.75A transformer into a common USB 5V/1.5A transformer.

I’m not sure if smaller is better seeing how sometimes I wake up in the morning to find that my 920 hasn’t charged because it wasn’t centered properly on the DT-900 (or perhaps I nudged it in my sleep), but perhaps the coil in the DT-601 will be larger?
