Video: New Nokia Lumia Catwalk Camera on show #OpticalZ? Posted: 12 May 2013 03:40 PM PDT
For those outside of the UK who didn’t get to see the teaser on channel 4, here’s the video again for you to watch. Just what exactly are we looking at? More than your eyes can see. In what way? Low light? Being able to zoom? Infra Red? Dead peepol? X-rays? Through walls? What’s on the other side of the camera lens?
Cheers crisscross for the headsup |
Posted: 12 May 2013 02:02 PM PDT I’m not sure what’s happening but one of our readers, Grazy, said they saw the new Nokia Lumia teased on channel 4. I thought they were joking but pocketlint just wrote about it too. Grazy said:
Here’s the pocket-lint link
ZOMG. Update: Sightings from techcrunch. It looks like that catwalk proto back. Looks like LED lights.
Can’t seem to find the old post atm… Cheers Grazy for the tip! |
Nokia EOS/Catwalk Teaser? “There are no limits to the human imagination” Maybe nothing… Posted: 12 May 2013 12:13 PM PDT
This could be nothing or this could be something. Tipper ‘Frag’ noticed this on the Nokia Facebook page where a scribbled sign on a wall says
But what’s that on the reflection? Possibly a Catwalk/EOS? Folks do love the extra pre-event speculation eh? :p Let your imagination run wild :p I’m not quite sure if this is what Frag is referring to… Reminds me of this: http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_might_release_a_smartphone_with_16element_camera_lens-news-5975.php Nokia’s Lytro thing. Haha. |
Laser Cut “home”-made Lumia 820 tripod Posted: 12 May 2013 07:20 AM PDT We’ve previously shown some of Victor’s work here on the blog (the tangible alarm concept) as well as the 3-D printed house key cover for the Lumia 820. Well today he’s shared his Laser Cut tripod for the Lumia 820 made out of a few pieces of acrylic. Check out the finished product above and below, as well as the actual process at the source link: |
Posted: 12 May 2013 01:48 AM PDT Talk about pushing boundaries. Whilst this is completely unrealistic to appear this year, it’s not totally impossible in the future. This is called the Windows Phone Surface N. I’m going to pretend the N is for Nokia and not Nova. It is designed by KuanGaa Chen. It has a 4K holographic screen for presenting cool things or more practical things like 3D maps, 4K recording, emotion theme bezel (pretty cool, change your lumia colours on the go) and a lytro camera. We know Nokia’s trying to add lytro-style imaging in future Lumias. You can even try a simulated lytro on your lumia already with this app, Refocus. Changeable edge colours. Colourful phones screen Nokia Very little bezel on the front. The WP buttons are still there though (vs on screen) Here’s their notification centre. A swipe from the main tiles (which oddly seem WP7.5 and not 8 though they are a lot more ‘active’ in the sense that video is being shown in tiles). It’s clean and very Metro. The app menu seems better organised. It’s in video form so it looks even more swish and fancy.

Nokia Lumia 928: Xenon Flash Fan test – freezing the blades Posted: 11 May 2013 11:59 PM PDT Something we always like to see in xenon capable cameras like the N82, N8 and 808 was their ability to freeze motion, particularly in low light situations where blur is expected. In the Nokia Lumia 920, it gathered in more light by opening the shutter for longer and compensating blurs with OIS. That was awesome for situations where flash was never going to help you, like scenery that’s far away (or also where flash would have ruined the picture and ambient light would have been better). In the 928 you kinda get the best of both worlds for photos as the xenon flash is capable of freezing motion, but you still have OIS to assist in removal of shakes or you can have no flash to make the most of the ambient lighting (and freak out when you see the camera sees better than your own eyes). You can see in the shot above how the 928 appears to have taken a picture with the fans not turning. Not too sure about the colours but that’s a whole other thing.
Xenon brings in much more light that you can reduce shutter speeds and reduce motion blur. Not the blur from your hands but the blur when things (like people) move. I like xenon flash for my low light people photos (e.g. on nights out. I mentioned back in November that the 920 was good for that but not as good as the 808. It has improved since then and definitely trumps every other smartphone out there for low light people/xenon that’s not the 808/N8. ) I love the OIS on my 920 for the sheer fact that I can hap-hazardly switch the camera on one handed, and snap a picture of anything with shaky hands and the pictures still look great (documents, outside scenery, daytime shots etc). Having both? Crickey. The Nokia Lumia 928 potentially solves the challenge I’ve had about Nokia since the days of the N82. The great all around camera and a great web browser. I said plenty of times before that I would have been happy even getting the N82 camera (or a regular 5MP with xenon). Now we’re expecting the EOS to trump the 928 but until then, this is the first Nokia for me to fill the smartphone and camera brief fully (unless you’ve had xenon before in your phones, 920 fans aren’t missing much). Cheers dss for the heads up! |
Nokia Smart Camera Lens on Nokia Lumia 928 (shutter speed control, manual white balance etc?) Posted: 11 May 2013 11:08 PM PDT Back in April, Michael wrote about the expected Nokia Smart Camera lens (for PR2.0) and here it is on the Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 pictured in one of the press shots. Oddly the blurb on WP site actually refers to smartshoot but that’s not on there (unless they’ve switched smartshoot capabilities into smart camera).
They love smartshoot – it’s also on the 920 page Cheers imuniem for the tip

Weekend Watch: Impressive 4k Nokia 808 PureView Time Lapse Posted: 11 May 2013 10:59 PM PDT I’m not sure we got around to posting this tip but I also just saw the same story tweeted by Damian. If it has, watch it again because it’s that good. It’s a creation from one of this imaging babies, a 4K video from a Nokia 808 PureView. Now, this isn’t actual video footage (though it was rumoured that the 808 was capable of such things). It’s a time lapse using photos from the 808 and extremely impressive stuff. Check out the video options – push it past 1080p to experience it (if you have a capable device of course. I don’t ). I’m liking the ability to pan and zoom around, just because there’s so much canvas to work with on the 808 that’s still super clear. Props for all the post production work to get this video together! Do be be careful when attempting to watch this video, users have reported that it might conk out your computer. Haha.
Cheers Alvester for the tip (and Damian for the reminder) |
Damian Dinning, previous Imaging Guru from Nokia excited about Next week’s Nokia event in London Posted: 11 May 2013 10:51 PM PDT WMPU reports on a tweet from Damian Dinning, an Ex-Nokian who was considered Nokia’s Imaging Guru. Whilst he might not be aware of the current intricacies at Nokia, he should still know a lot given his position at Nokia and he’d still have connections. Damian tweeted that “Next week sounds very exciting” referring to the Nokia event in London, May 14th. It’ll definitely be rather hectic for me as I’ve got an exam the previous day (and hopping on a train to London immediately after). I’ve given myself a few minutes from revision to check emails and blog :p. Anyway. Whilst some speculate that the new camera flagship isn’t coming until later this year (closer to ‘Nokia World’ style dates) WMPU hopes it might be coming next week given Damian’s excitement for the upcoming Nokia event. The EOS is the WP camera flagship, 41MP PureView like the OS but according to dsmobile, even better than the Nokia 808 PureView (a feat only really possible by Nokia themselves). However, camera wise there should still be something interesting coming next week if it’s not the EOS. Nokia is expected to announce at least the Nokia Catwalk. A slimmer, more beautiful device that has an improved camera over the 920, with a better camera than the iPhone 5 (according to dsmobile). Slim but still packing was Nokia’s main criticisms last year (unless of course the thickness or bump is so highly productive, i.e. 808). Damian was questioned on twitter whether it was the EOS but he only responded “nice try”. It appears that he’s still bound by NDAs for the devices he’s aware of but he says a lot can happen in 5-6 months and whatever knowledge he might have might be out of date.
There’s some others if you follow the conversation Speaking more on the hump. Damien says he’s a believer that you can always do better. Not for the sake of it but because thinking evolves. I agree. Cheers Viipottaja for the tip!
