Win a Lumia 520 with Nokia Australia’s #520Friday competition Posted: 29 May 2013 08:14 PM PDT Nokia Australia got in touch with me earlier today, to let me know of a competition they are holding on Twitter. Every Friday, until June 21st, Nokia Australia will choose a winner (aptly at 5:20pm ) to score their very own Lumia 520. How do you win? This is is the easy part. All you need to do is simply tweet @NokiaAustralia with a picture of you getting ready to enjoy the weekend. Yes, it’s as simple as taking a photo and tweeting it! In the tweet give a little description and make sure you include the #520Friday hashtag to be eligible to win!

Nokia Lumia 925 vs Nokia Lumia 920 indoor and macro photos (+GDR2 and LCD/OLED screen comparisons) Posted: 29 May 2013 12:06 PM PDT Whilst we did briefly post about how the Nokia Lumia 925 was even better than the Nokia Lumia 920 in low light, that was only a short test and was pushing the extremes. Here are some images in a more ‘real life’ setting, more lighting available but still showing how the 925 has improved over the 920. Closer look. Keep note at the focus point, it’s still sharp when zooming in.
Crop/screenshot Images are said to be sharper with improved white balance. There also seems to be less of that glare/lensflare. You can see more images of GDR2 too: winp.cn/

Nokia (33%) pipped to second in Finland by Sammy (36%) – Sammy opens research centre in Finland Posted: 29 May 2013 11:47 AM PDT
For those who say Finland is by default a Nokia country, simply buying Nokia phones, that’s not strictly the case. Since pre-2008, Android and iOS has been chipping into Nokia’s lead and winning the hearts of quite a proportion of those 5 million + residents. Whilst Symbian continued to plummit, Nokia has managed to claw some ground back with Windows Phone, notably with Lumia reaching quite a few top 10 (even right at the top) placements. There are several reports that Nokia is now at 33% of Finnish sales, with Samsung pipping them to the top with 36%.
Not quite sure what article this was from but ‘arts’ tipped this image from WMPoweruser - Possibly somewhere on IDC. It shows SMARTPHONE Sales Volume Q1 2010 in Finland. Things seemed to have risen and then dropped between Q4 2010 to Q1 2011 and continued falling. The addition of Lumia in Finland possibly helps gain back some ground but falls again as Samsung outmanoeuvres. As pointed out by ‘muhs’ in comments:
More and more of Samsung’s shipments are ‘smartphones’ whilst Nokia push basic phones and pose some Ashas as ‘smartphones’. How quickly can Nokia push Lumia down? How quickly can they even make those handsets? To pour salt into the wounds, Samsung is continuing it’s ‘invasion’ by opening a research centre in Finland.
They’re playing to their strengths well, no? Using their position to continue staying larger. If only Nokia didn’t stumble with Symbian. Cheers Alvester, John and Michael for the tip

Posted: 29 May 2013 06:23 AM PDT While we sit patiently waiting for Nokia and Microsoft to deliver the next update to our previous phones, somewhere out there in the wild someone has a Lumia 925 running Nokia Amber (or WP8 GDR2). Below are a couple pictures showing off some of the features coming in this latest update including:

Pics: Man of Steel Covers for Lumia 920, 720 and 925 Posted: 29 May 2013 05:50 AM PDT Dean shared a couple more pictures of his Man of Steel Swag with us (in case you missed it check out the wireless charging gear over here). There are 3 different cases, a simple silicone rubber case for the 920 (like the one that came with the 800 and N9) except it has the Superman logo on the back; as well as wireless charging covers for the Lumia 720 and 925. It might be the case’s influence, but I don’t think I ever noticed how large the camera/lens on the back of the 925 is, maybe it’s the “bezzel” around the lens, but it certainly does look cool. |
Idstagram Instagram app renamed to “Instance” Posted: 29 May 2013 05:28 AM PDT
WPCentral reports that the popular Instagram app, Idstagram is to be renamed “Instance”. This was chosen in a poll, which itself was put out because of the threat of removal from the store. Why? I’m not quite sure. Maybe the name was too close/trademark issues. Anyway, that’ll be the name from now on. The next closest name was pseudogram. What would you have named it?
