Honestly I’m not the worlds biggest soccer fan (obvious by the fact that I call it soccer and not football), but one thing I can definitely get behind are one of a kind phones, especially when it;s a spanking hot red 920. In memory of Manchester United’s head coach Sir Alexander Ferguson Nokia went ahead and had a custom Lumia 920 engraved for him, in red of course. And to make sure we’re all part of the fun there’s a second 920 up for grabs to one of you, simply retweet the tweet down below (make sure you’re following Nokia UK of course):

Lumiappdates: Cinemagraph, Photobeamer and PlayTo updated (Smart Shoot too?)

Posted: 08 May 2013 10:02 AM PDT

MNBwp_ss_20130508_0005

I haven’t got these updates yet but earlier this afternoon Kagiso shared these screenshots with us indicating that Cinemagraph, Photobeamer and PlayTo have got these updates.

Also, I noticed another tip which confirms these updates over at WPC. WPC note that Smart Shoot is also amongst the crew of updates.

Cheers Kagiso and dietyyli for the tip!

Asha 501 Specs Leaked

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:18 AM PDT

e0e49ec525035efba13d9fa2c197ad22

It seems one of those online sellers in India have posted a listing of the Asha 501 (with no price as of yet); the phone has some decent specs backed with the usual S40 of Ashas. As the story has been with Ashas for a while now, the real importance is what features will come to the lower end of the price range, something that has been Nokia’s goal for a while now; but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

http://mobiles.sulekha.com/nokia_asha-501_mobile.htm

The Nokia Asha 501 is an entry level smartphone that would compete with the low end Android smartphones in the market. This device comes loaded with a lot of features that would satisfy a low end smartphone user.

OS & Processor

This device comes with Nokia’s Symbian series 40 OS loaded in it. There is a 1 GHz processor loaded in the Nokia Asha 501 for the smooth performance of the device. The 512 MB RAM helps in easy multitasking.

Hardware

The Nokia Asha 501 comes with a 3.5-inch AMOLED display screen that offers visuals at 320 x 480 pixels. This handset comes with a bar shaped design and its touchscreen ensures easy navigation.

Camera & Memory

This handset comes with a 5 MP primary camera that helps in capturing images with impressive resolution. The Nokia Asha 501 has a microSD slot for memory expansion up to 32 GB.

Media & Connectivity

The Nokia Asha 501 comes with media features that include music player, video player, FM radio and SNS apps etc. Connectivity features available in the handset include 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE etc.

Of course it could be a case of one of the online shops trying to be the first to list the phone (since the product images are very poor quality), but so far it sounds reasonable.

LeakyLeak: New Nokia Asha 501

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

nokia asha 501 rainbowFresh from @evleaks this is apparently going to be named the Nokia Asha 501. Asha in the 5xx range eh? They certainly look colourful.

Expect the official announcement tomorrow :) .

Ali:

This pretty much lines up with the previous leaks of the new Asha design language we saw before:

A Closer Look at the "New Asha Design language" Leak

Interestingly though if the device number is right “501″ that would mean that Ashas are getting closer to the Lumia range (the 505 is the lowest Lumia if I’m not mistaken).

Cheers Muerte for the tip!

Some Nokia Shareholders Still Unhappy; Once Again Asking to “Switch Roads”

Posted: 08 May 2013 07:50 AM PDT

DSC02029I honestly didn’t want to post this since usually this sort of “news” is overblown and exaggerated, but oh well… In the annual shareholders meeting in Helsinki the usual issue of Nokia’s low stock price and marketshare came-up, and as ever year since 2011 “some” stock holders have asked Elop to reconsider the strategy and find another path (besides WP).

“Are you aware that results are what matter? The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Please switch to another road,”

The way I see it, if enough shareholders actually shared the opinion that Nokia should go the Android way, then they would have already, Elop isn’t a “supreme owner” he can’t do whatever he wants, Nokia is a publicly traded company, and publicly owned if an actual majority of the stockholders believed that Nokia is going “to hell” they would’ve changed something by now. Instead once again as usual Elop has strengthened his support and dedication to the WP platform (plus conquering the low end with some new Ashas).

Personally I don’t see what the fuss is about, if these shareholders sat through 2 years of literal hell during the transition period, why are they giving up now when things are finally starting to straighten out, the 521 & 520 are sure to surge Nokia’s sales and market share; plus the Verizon hero phone on the way? Personally I’d have to call it a single shareholder with an Android fetish.

Nokia Teases New Ashas for Thursday’s Nokia event in India (N9 Mini Asha Refresh)

These colourful splashes and rectacircs/rectacles (whatever this shape is actually called) are synonymous with Nokia Lumia or the fabula design which we’re slowly seeing creep into Ashas and basic Nokias.

NokConv teases tomorrow’s Nokia event where they’ll be adding even more colour to your week.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/05/08/ready-to-add-some-colour-to-your-week/ via

  • New Delhi: 12.00pm
  • Helsinki: 9:30am
  • London: 7:30am

Michael is in India to report on the event.

Stephen Elop has confirmed new innovations and new devices in the Asha lines in the days immediately ahead:

http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/05/07/nokia-asha-idINDEE94607N20130507

The Asha line is expected to get the new refresh UI and design that would make them, as some would describe, more N9/N9 mini like.

What went wrong with MeeGo? Dave Neary explains

Posted: 08 May 2013 02:51 AM PDT

N9 N900

There are many stories from many sides as to what actually went wrong with MeeGo.

Here’s another over at TechRadar in an interview with Dave Neary who worked on MeeGo.

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/what-went-wrong-with-meego-nokia-lost-faith-in-the-project–1147770

  • Nokia apparently lost faith in the project. But how? Apparently in the way MeeGo came about, as a marriage of Moblin and Maemo, negotiating who’s components would go into the programme (Intel’s stuff or Nokia’s stuff).
  • At the time MeeGo was launched, Nokia was a few months away from launching what became N900 and N9 (N900 was already announced in 2009 though :/ Maybe they mean N950?)
  • More than a year later until the devices were launched
  • Different UI between Nokia and Intel. Dave says he understands Nokia’s position, as Nokia had been working on Maemo 6 and were literally months from releasing that device and suddenly all the work would have to be redone. Cutting corners and fixing for the next version took longer than expected.

Nokia site confirms Nokia Lumia 928 as Nokia Laser (xenon) , Wunderman site mirror

Posted: 08 May 2013 12:40 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-08 at 08.36.04

The page source of the Nokia Lumia 928 shows off that it’s the Nokia Laser (xenon/big Red?).

Laser was first mentioned probably back in January now as the Nokia Lumia flagship for Verizon.

There’s an alternative mirrored site for the agency probably around the 928.
