Cringe Worthy: Samsung Tries to Get Creative With the Galaxy S4 Design Story

Posted: 01 May 2013 08:18 AM PDT

nokia-phone-manufacturing

It’s become sort of tradition for manufacturers nowadays to release a “design story” alongside their phones, Apple have got it pretty good with Mr. Ives and their crisp white backgrounds, but sometimes it just feels forced. Like Samsung’s take on the S4 design story below, this has got to be one of the worst design stories (right behind HTC pretending the 8X wasn’t inspired by Nokia).

Reading the comments alone gives you an idea of how people reacted to this:

  • This year we have decided to copy our own device, Galaxy S3…

  • Take S III. Put in bigger screen. Tell everyone it’s like nothing they saw before. Profit.

  • Was it so hard to admit saying “we dint think much, we thought the s3 design to be enough”?

  • Is this video a April Fools’ Day joke?!

I especially like the fact they keep on repeating that the S4 is “like nothing you’ve seen before”, really Samsung? Nothing? Nothing at all!? Think harder! Perhaps the S3? No wait that can’t be right; we’ve already seen that. But then again this video is coming from the same company whose previous flagship was launched with the phrase “Designed for Humans”.

Well back to how this is relevant to Nokia, is the fact that it reminded me of Marko’s design story of the 920, you don’t need a backdrop of a city with some intense soundtracks to sell a design story, you simply only need a design story (go figure). Check out Marko down below:

Amazing Nokia 808 PureView Timelapse Video and other Camera Tips!

CCC

Hello MNB Readers!

I couldn’t pass up sharing these YouTube videos from the Camera Check Channel (CCC). There is a lot of flexibility with the 808 PureView’s large sensor and Carl Zeiss optics. Even after having my 808 for a month, I am still learning how to best utilize all of the camera options and usage scenarios that are now possible. Keep in mind that even though these videos are for the 808 PureView, they provide information that may be helpful even if you don’t have a 808. Hopefully, if Nokia delivers a new device with a camera matching or exceeding the 808, more people will be able to try some of the tips on more widely available devices as well. Enough of my rambling, on to the high-quality footage and tips from CCC.

NOTE: The direct link beneath each video should help play the videos directly in YouTube if you are unable to view the embedded videos on this page using your phone’s web browser.

Have any of you used any of these tips with your 808 PureView or other device such as the Lumia 920, Nokia N8, N86/82 or non-Nokia smart phone? What camera swag/items do you usually carry with you? I always keep a 72′ tripod in my car and a small bag with all the necessities such as a 2 small tripods, tripod mount, wall charger, HDMI, RCA, USB-OTG, USB, SD Adapters, Micro SDs (2, 4, 8, 16, 32 GB), random non activated SIM cards, cleaning cloth and my trusty N8 as backup. I have a lot of tech with me but I need to widen my usage of said tech and videos like the ones on CCC are just what I need to help get the creative ideas flowing.

You can find another video (and hopefully more in the future) and more information over at the Camera Check Channel on YouTube

Thank you all for reading MyNokiaBlog and watching the videos.

Have a great day!

Deaconclgi

P.S. I am slowly adding photos to my Flickr set as I gain experience with the 808. I can already see an improvement in composition, lighting, focusing, resolved detail and overall photo quality by using Creative Mode versus how I first started out, shooting everything in Automatic. ;)

Lumiapps: “Hungry Now” Polished Free Fast Food Finder For your Nokia Lumia #DevAppTip

Posted: 30 Apr 2013 10:51 PM PDT

MNBwp_ss_20130501_0002

We received this App-Tip from the actual developers of “Hungry Now”, the “July 03 Apps Creator” team.

We've just launched our 1st mobile app and we're lovin it !

Hungry Now displays the quickest way to your favorite fast-foods around. The design is bright and preppy and the UX is intuitive and easy-to-use. Users really like it and it's only one week out !
- It is working woldwide
- in more than 15 languages
- it displays all the biggest fast-foods brands

Just try it :  http://www.windowsphone.com/fr-fr/store/app/hungry-now/e1bca141-85cb-4a8f-9293-ced9d3462927

Looking forward to hearing what you think

Hungry Now is a location based app that finds the nearest Fast Food place for you. The current options seem to be US based only so no localised ones at the moment for your country (and especially no mini start up fast food places). It’s easy enough to change which main four appear…

Whilst you could use something like City Lens or the myriad of other place finding solutions, I suggest taking a look at this one as it seems to have a lot of potential. These use google maps’ data apparently but you can open up Nokia Drive when getting directions.

Name: Hungry Now

Price: Free

In addition to fans of apps, If you a developer, feel free to send us links to your own app. If we get a chance to look at it, and it’s impresses, we’ll do our best to share :) (If we don’t show it, it’s not necessarily and less likely because we’re unimpressed, it might just be timing issues)

There’s a lot of animation that does not come through in screenshots that makes the app even more appealing to use, I find.

The bubbles change size depending on how far you zoom in or out, collecting the relevant POIs or expanding them.

Tapping will give you options for directions and will even tell you if this place is closed (though no opening times mentioned. I guess if you were hungry now, you wouldn’t care to wait. You’d just want to go to the nearest place that’s open.

Tapping the car gives you the option to open up Nokia Drive (or other mapping solutions you might have).

Tapping the walk option initiates walk directions immediately.
