Yellow Nokia Lumia 925 coming? Or is that the wireless charging cover?

GSM Arena reports that there might be colourful Nokia Lumia 925 on the way as indicated by a picture from Nokia’s future talent facebook page.

Is that a colourful Nokia Lumia 925 or just one of the optional  charging covers? I’m not sure what picture GSMArena is referring to or if the one above is just an image for their post.

http://blog.gsmarena.com/nokia-lumia-925-might-soon-be-available-in-different-color-combinations/

On the upside, the cover is so thin that people might be confusing it for the actual phone itself.

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

Windows Phone Marketplace Will Finally Support Gift Cards (rather than Microsoft Points)

Posted: 16 May 2013 10:09 AM PDT

Windows Phone Gift Card

One of the most irritating things about the Windows Phone marketplace (besides the missing apps) is the fact that your purchase options are VERY limited, Paypal is only supported in a few countries, and I’m not even sure if carrier billing is an option. Even worse is the fact that there *was* no such thing as a “gift card” well hopefully that’s all about to change as according to The Verge Microsoft will be introducing a new gift card system instead of their Microsoft points.

The cards can be used to purchase Windows/Windows Phone apps, Music and Media content, and other goodies.

The new system will work across Microsoft’s various marketplaces, including the Windows Store, Windows Phone Store, and Xbox. We understand that Microsoft is planning to unveil the system as soon as E3, with a planned launch later this year in time for the next-generation Xbox console.

Amber Update Set to bring Even Better Low Light Photos to the Lumia 920

Posted: 16 May 2013 08:09 AM PDT

AmberIn the latest Nokia Conversations post comparing the Lumia 925 to the competition, they added a final note about the Lumia 920′s imaging performance:

We'll show you what difference the Nokia Lumia Amber Update makes to the photos from the Nokia Lumia 920 in the coming weeks…

So hopefully we’re set to get some greater software optimization and output out of the Lumia 920, which technically should bring it on par with the 925 in terms of low light, seeing how there are no physical differences (correct me if I’m wrong?) thanks for pointing out that the lumia 925 indeed has one more lens in its senor than the 920, unlike the 928 which uses its xenon flash to light the way.

Windows Phone overtakes BlackBerry – now third place in smartphone shipments

Posted: 16 May 2013 08:07 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 16.00.14One step at a time eh? One of the goals for WP for both Nokia and MS was that it should be a legitimate third option against the duopoly of Android and iOS.

TheVerge reports than in terms of smartphone shipments, BlackBerry has been overtaken by WP. Something that some said would never happen. It’s still relatively small figures with WP climbing to 3.2% from 2.6% whilst BlackBerry declines from 3.2% to 2.9%. Android’s shipments continue to race which explains why despite a great quarter for Apple, their marketshare still decreased to 17.3%. That could perhaps speak some volumes regarding WP’s ability to increase in even tougher climates.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/16/4336298/windows-phone-overtakes-blackberry-to-claim-third-place

Speaking of Android, Engadget reports that 95% of all Android profit goes to Samsung.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/16/samsung-estimated-to-make-95-percent-of-android-device-profits/

How exactly are Nokia and MS going to break into double digits for global smartphone sales? Nokia have a good approach with high end experiences in entry level devices. But they still need ever stronger flagships to raise the image of the brand too.

Cheers Alvester and ms.nokia for the tip!

Photo Comparison: Lumia 925 Vs. The Competition

Posted: 16 May 2013 07:47 AM PDT

9919cd3691c363e14222fec4bd4af51dThe folks at the official Nokia blog have posted a quick simple comparison of the Lumia 925 vs. the competition (Xperia Z, iPhone 5, S4, HTC One). Of course the 925 wins hands down (no surprises there) but check it out at the link below:

Google demands MS remove YouTube app due to lack of ads, MS happy to if Google allows API access

Posted: 16 May 2013 03:50 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 11.51.34

Google doesn’t want to make a YouTube app for Windows Phone, nor has it allowed access to the necessary APIs for MS to make a complying youtube app. So they went and made their own which Google isn’t happy about because it circumvents ad placement. Google is all about ads – it functions to make money from you and your data, whilst you’re in the belief that you’re getting things completely for free. That’s not the issue here. The issue is that Google says this violates their terms of service for YouTube, claiming it harms partners that make money from the ads (harms partners or Google? :/ I’d rather them be open and honest rather than use the partners as an excuse).

The latest development is that Google has demanded that MS remove the app from their store by May 22nd. MS responded that they’d be more than happy to include ads if Google gives them access. I think the app also allows downloads from YouTube which Google also prohibits in their terms of service (even mentioning services that allow that will get you a letter from google telling you to remove it from your site).

Aren’t you nice, Google? :) .

What app do you use to watch Youtube on your Lumia? I use either the mobile site or metrotube.

Nokia Lumia 925 Hands on gallery – extremely wide viewing angles

Posted: 16 May 2013 02:49 AM PDT

MNBIMG_4965Just delving through some of the pictures that we quickly snapped on Tuesday of the new Nokia Lumia 925.

You might want to check out NokConv’s post about the screen on the 925 which explains what’s so special about it.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/05/15/why-the-nokia-lumia-925-is-a-screen-idol/

  • New laminated AMOLED
  • Saturated, vivid, deep blacks
  • 600 Nit brightness – brighter than any OLED display on the market
  • super sunlight readability – the screen adjusts the contrasts and brightness so that unlike folks without this on their device, you don’t have to cover up your phone screen.
  • Extremely wide viewing angle
  • Super sensitive display
  • New colour profiling – change the vividness of your screen to how you want it.

Some people like wide viewing angles, others might not. They might be useful as you can get overhead shots and still see the screen. They might not be so useful in that other people might peek at your private conversations. Up to you really.

There’s a gallery below – not just of the screen. Any repeats – that’s due to the uploader going weirdo on me.

Might be difficult to see the screen from this angle :p

As we mentioned before, the Nokia Lumia 925 feels great in the hand. Robust, sturdy, well built, yet lighter and slimmer than the 920.
