you are not aloneNo It’s not MJ’s song, it’s a promo for the Man of Steel which Nokia’s quite involved with.

Trailers of the Man Of Steel were prominent at the demo areas for the metal clad Nokia Lumia 925 launch.

Lumia Tip: Use “Backlight” Scene as an HDR Mode

Posted: 22 May 2013 11:23 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-15 at 12.56.54 PM

For some reason or the other Nokia have always insisted on NOT including “HDR” in pretty much all their phones, the 808 has “bracketing mode” but that’s about it. Of course HDR is kind of useful sometimes, and sometimes people have no idea what it is, but constantly have it set to on, on their iPhones. Well it turns out theirs actually a setting in your Lumia’s camera that should get the job done, selecting “Backlight” under the scenes option in the camera settings will get you some pretty good results in those tricky lighting shots.

Sure it’s not true HDR (where three different pictures are taken at different exposure levels) but it is close enough; in terms of every day performance; with the added benefit that you can use it directly from the camera without the need for a 3rd part app/lens. The image above was taken on the Lumia 720, the right one obviously being Auto mode, while the left was backlight; and the difference is huge (don’t ask why auto mode doesn’t adjust to the sun/shade). True the background in the left picture does look nicer with more accurate and deeper colors, but the tradeoff being that I was reduced to a silhouette.  On the other hand the right picture taken with backlight mode did some magic with the exposures and got an acceptable outcome (minus my horrible smile and squinty eyes of course).

The two photos below were also taken once in auto mode (the first image) and once in backlight (both with the physical camera button, to avoid changing the focus area).The difference once again is obvious, and although the backlight one’s screen is horribly washed out you can see the difference in the background detail.

Hopefully Nokia will add a full auto-HDR mode soon (perhaps in the smart camera app?) but for now backlight mode is a useful trick to keep in mind.

Cheers.

From Our Friends – Inspiration: Homescreen galleries across the AAS community!

Home screen philosophy

Dear MNB Readers!

Our good friend, Steve Litchfield of AllAboutSymbian (AAS), has a great article that shows user submitted Symbian home screen setups!

From the article:

I asked a few days ago for screen grabs of your Symbian homescreens, so that we can all learn and take inspiration from the set-up efforts of the wider AAS community – and here I present the results, thanks to everyone for your submissions, from all across the world. And if I didn’t get round to including your homescreens, please don’t be offended – I had way more submissions than could be reasonably included here. Do note that this article is quite big, in terms of bytes, because of the number of screenshots – please be patient while it all loads in your web browser!

There’s a lot to a set of homescreens, of course, with my original questions being:

  • Do you max them out (six) or keep them simple (or even single)?
  • Do you go for garish or plain?
  • Mainly active content or mainly shortcuts?
  • Do you try for any artistic look?
  • What about wallpaper? Same for all homescreens, or geekily set to mimic panning? Or dramatically different for each, perhaps themed?
  • Any widgets that you use which aren’t well known and deserve wider dissemination?

Here then, for everyone’s interest, are some of your submissions, along with any comments by the originator and, in places, with my own thoughts…

I think Steve has a great article and a wonderful community over at AAS and the article provides a great insight at how other Symbian users around the world have their home screens set up, their philosophy and the various applications that they use. Who knows, you may just see something that catches your eye or find out about an application that you didn’t know about previously.

I didn’t get a chance to submit my home screens for inclusion in his article but the main pic of this article contains my home screens and a brief explanation behind their setup and wallpaper choices. What do you all think of my setup? It’s rather simple and basic compared to the fine examples over at AAS. Feel free to comment below with answers to Steve’s original questions or head over to AAS to join in on the discussion there.

As always, thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog and have a great day!

Nokia Teases Man of Steel Superman Movie Inside a Steel Lumia 925 Frame

Screen Shot 2013-05-22 at 6.32.59 PM

Nokia has a thing for superhero movies (or so it would appear), strongly associating themselves with the Dark Knight franchise and now the new Superman Movie “Man of Steel”. In their latest trailer/teaser they have a snippet of the new Man of Steel trailer playing inside a steel bodied Lumia 925 (I see what you did there). Check it out down below:

Or go ahead and watch the full trailer:

So is it just me or is anyone else super excited for this movie? (oh and The Wolverine also coming out this summer, gonna be awesome!)

-Maybe we’ll even see some product placement of one of the Lumias in it? Last time they made a fuss about the Dark Knight rises but there weren’t any Nokias in it at all.

Thanks for the tip Muerte

Well here’s how to show off Windows Phone/Nokia Lumia. Not by hiding it in the corner and ignoring it, but by having a little bit of effort.

Nice one, Australia. It’s pretty funky. There’s a multiscreen above and a big interactive WP. :)

Easter Eggs in N9!!!

Posted: 22 May 2013 02:28 AM PDT

2013-05-22_13-56-35

This is actually super cool! It may be over a year since the last Software Update, and nearly two years since device announcement, but the Harmattan community are still finding little secrets left behind by the team.

By going into Settings > About and tapping NOKIA a few times in quick succession, you get a dialogue that says Easter Eggs are turned on (and conversely, the same once on will deactivate them).

So far, these are the easter eggs that are known:

  • WLAN0 in the about screen – IP Address of the device
  • Settings > Device > Display – Swipe down to close toggle is back
  • Added Wallpapers

The thread in TMO also links to some code that seems to show the Swipe to Close functionality, as well as something with LPM. No idea though what it does as I can’t find anything on my N9 or N950.

MGConfItem eggs(EGGS_GCONF_KEY);
    if (eggs.value().toBool()) {
        m_lowPowerChangeable = true;
        m_topCloseChangeable = true;
    } else {
        MGConfItem lps (“/meegotouch/settings/low_power_switchable”);
        m_lowPowerChangeable = lps.value (true).toBool ();
        MGConfItem tcs (“/meegotouch/settings/top_swipe_switchable”);
        m_topCloseChangeable = tcs.value (false).toBool ();
    }
Let us know if you find anything!

HERE Maps for WP8 updated with Live Sight

Posted: 21 May 2013 11:27 PM PDT

Early this morning, my Lumia 820 got prompted with an update for HERE Maps. I pressed update, without paying much attention, as I was half asleep still. Doing the rounds on the interwebs, I saw Nokia Conversations had posted about the update.

HERE Maps has been updated, and comes with the new LiveSight Augmented Reality feature. As Pino reports on NokConv, LiveSight will also work completely offline. HOW COOL IS THAT!

Here’s the snippet from NokConv:

How is HERE better with LiveSight?

HERE uses sight navigation as a new way to discover and find your way through the world. Sometimes pins on a map are not quite enough, LiveSight uses sight to recognize and identify places around you simply, by looking around through your phone's display.

In HERE Maps, LiveSight allows you to pinpoint exactly where you're going just by looking. Just open HERE Maps, tap the LiveSight icon and pan around. LiveSight reveals shops, restaurants and your favourite places as virtual signs on buildings right on your screen.

With LiveSight you can 'see' the place you're looking for, and know which way you need to walk, even in crowded areas.

HERE Maps with LiveSight is about getting you where you're going quickly, even when there are no house numbers or if all the buildings look alike. So LiveSight in HERE Maps lets you literally see your destination.

And there's one more bonus… LiveSight in HERE Maps works completely offline too.

I’m bogged down with uni work today to go try it out in a real world scenario, but hopefully I’ll play around with it later this week, and maybe record a quick hands-on.

Whilst on the subject on HERE getting updates, we got tipped about a post on  Whirlpool’s Forum:

A nice overhaul of HERE maps is on the way, it is going to include the direction you are travelling on the maps like the iphone and I’d imagine it will tie in to the HERE.net ecosystem better!

Talk to @heremaps on twitter, they are the ones that told me they are testing the update!

Cheers Glenn for the tip!
