Accessories: MugenPower’s 3600mAh Nokia Lumia 820 Battery Posted: 04 May 2013 07:42 PM PDT Just in time for the start of the weekend, the insane 3600mAh Nokia Lumia 820 battery from MugenPower arrived at my door. Yes, you read that right, 3600mAh! Normally, the Nokia Lumia 820 is powered by only 1650mAh, but Mugen have created a battery that more than doubles it! Having a bigger battery, obviously takes up more space, hence Mugen provide you with their custom designed shell, in order to house the power-filled monster. It has the connections for NFC, as well as a camera plate hole, only hiding the Carl Zeiss branding. At it’s thickest part, it adds about 1cm extra of height to the back of the device, compared to the standard shell. It’s only been 2 days, but so far, the battery life of my Lumia 820 seems insanely good. I’ll bring you guys a review of it next week, as I’ll be putting it to the ultimate test in Delhi. The battery “door” comes in Black, Red, White or Yellow. (As you can see, we’ve got the glossy White version.) If the extra size isn’t something you could put up with for more juice, Mugen also has a 1800mAh battery that fits with the existing shell. Here’s a gallery I quickly put together. Huge thanks to MugenPower for sending us the battery! |
WP8.1 AKA Windows Blue Appears on “P4301″ and the 920 Via AdDuplex Posted: 04 May 2013 11:16 AM PDT For a while now AdDuplex has been able to provide a pretty reliable stream of information about the breakdown of the Windows Phone market-share in terms of OEMs and Software versions.
The latest tease from AdDuplex is some instances of Windows Phone 8.1 (which has been rumored to be Windows Phone Blue) appearing on a Nokia “tests device P4301″ as well as the 920 (and the unspeakable 8X). As a reminder WP8.1 is only rumored to roll out after both GDR2 and GDR3 updates, which are supposed to come out sometime this year (GDR2 is supposed to bring Sleeping screen and a better camera UI, while GD3 is set to bring 1080p support and more cores). |
Concept: Windows Phone People Hub Redesigned Posted: 04 May 2013 05:36 AM PDT Here’s another cool Windows Phone improvement concept, this time coming from the Verge Forums, the new refresh focuses and getting more functionality out of the People Hub/What’s New without losing the Metro/WP look (which everyone seems to be hurting about in the new Facebook app). The main changes are shrinking the size of the “people” header as well as getting more functionality out of the what’s new by adding users profile pictures next to their posts, and giving a large view of shared images. This is the kind of change I want to see in future versions of Windows phone, not more tile sizes! (although they are also welcome) but I want more functionality out of some of the features that made me fall in love with Windows Phone in the first place. Check out the rest of the re-design and more details at the forum post in the link below:

Lumia 928 Possibly Launching May 7th at a Verizon Event in NYC (Updated) Posted: 04 May 2013 05:04 AM PDT Update-Apparently the launch party on May 7th is for the Blackberry Z10, it’s doubtful we’ll see the 928 being released in the same event. All signs are pointing to a very close launch for the Verizon destined Lumia 928; the latest of which the premature billboard that appeared proclaiming superior low-light performance. The latest bit of information to add to the rumor bin is a potential launch date set for May 7th in NYC; this comes courtesy of a Verizon endorsed tech blogger who noted that she’ll be attending a Verizon launch in NYC on May 7th:
So unless Verizon plan on launching two hero phones within a week of each other I think it’s pretty safe to assume that the 928 will finally be unveiled on the 7th. *May the 4th be with you. |
Oops? Lumia 928 Billboard Claims “The Best Low-Light Smartphone Camera” Title Posted: 04 May 2013 04:41 AM PDT I’m honestly not sure what to make of this, one of our readers “Bogdan” linked it to us in one of our posts asking if this picture is real. The billboard is obviously an advertisement for the yet unreleased and un-announced Lumia 928 on Verizon. The picture does look quite real to my untrained eye, especially considering the Verizon logo and the Microsoft logo as well in the upper right corner; plus the device arrangement/screen renders aren’t the same as the previous leaks we’ve seen, and of course the Xenon flash is quite obviously there. So why exactly is the 928 the greatest low-light camera out there? Is it simply OIS + Xenon flash? Or is there more to that story? Regardless the 928 launch is probably within the next few days, and somebody slipped up on an early billboard reveal? Or the picture was taken while the billboard was being put up, either way exciting times ahead! |
WP reaches 20% in Mexico and Poland, Nokia getting all MS’ attention now (WP9 – Nokia only?) Posted: 04 May 2013 01:52 AM PDT WMPU reports that in Poland, WP has over 20% marketshare now. WP’s Terry Myerson spoke to Reuters and applauded Nokia’s efforts saying “Nokia's doing a great job…they really are receiving all of our go-to-market energy right now”. And you can see it. In recent MS/WP promos and adverts, the focus has been on Nokia (like This or This). And it makes sense given how Nokia is really the main player and the only one really paying attention to WP. HTC is busy struggling with Android (possibly accidentally stuffing their next phone with Nokia exclusive components without their knowledge) and Samsung is merrily doing their Galaxy thing (and rumoured to have been playing with WP only to waste MS’ time. Incidentally, whilst searching for a post on that rumoured Samsung ploy of stringing MS along, I came across a couple of articles suggesting WP9 could just be a Nokia thing. Or at least Sammy dropping out.
Well there will still be handsets coming from the ‘other’ WP manufacturers supposedly being announced in the next few months. But those are WP8 devices. What about WP9? Although that might be some time away it might be worth considering the impact of a Nokia only WP. The multiple manufacturers thing gives users a choice. It allows them an offering of devices that would otherwise not be possible by Nokia alone. At the very least it keeps users in that ecosystem for Nokia to siphon off when Nokia is able to sway them. Such has been the case for Nokia Lumia owners that were previously users of other WP devices. It’s not a huge number but something to build upon. Now, Nokia’s portfolio is expanding across a greater range of price points and a greater range of offerings, perhaps it is possible to go it alone? I’d still rather see some other manufacturers trying it out with WP, in the same way it would have been nice for Nokia not to have been alone in the end with Symbian. As long they all do their own stuff of course.

Weekend Read: Nokia Lumia 920 vs Nokia N8 vs Nokia Lumia 720 Posted: 04 May 2013 01:25 AM PDT A very interesting comparison again for you to take a gander at. This one looks at the Nokia Lumia 920 vs 720 vs N8, all in one camera battle. The Nokia N8 was the undisputed camera king until being knocked into second place by the 808. The Nokia Lumia 920 is currently the low light king, but has won best smartphone camera for its PureView OIS added versatility. The Nokia Lumia 720 is the odd one as it’s mid-range but still somehow competes quite well for low light, but how does it do for other conditions? That bump (for added big sensor goodness) and xenon is mighty useful in a camera phone (eh 808 users?). The challenge is how’s Nokia going to squeeze camera performance into thinner and thinner phones? Or should they – or should they at least keep a ‘bump’ range for the photo-enthusiast and then have others that are also very good but slimmer (e.g. Catwalk) Head over to:
