Video: Road Trip Nokia Lumia 928 Promo – Capture the Highlights, even in low light

Here’s a promo for the Nokia Lumia 928 from Nokia US. I’m amazed that there’s no mention of Xenon flash or even a demo of how that works vs LED.

Follow a group of friends as they take a road trip for the ages from Santa Monica to the Nokia Theater in downtown LA. With the new Nokia Lumia 928, they can capture all of the day’s memorable moments from the early morning until the wee hours. The Carl Zeiss Optics and Optical Image Stabilization lets them capture and share amazing blur-free photos and videos, even in low-light conditions. Watch as they use the Nokia Lumia 928 to capture highlights of their road trip.

MNBIMG_4846On Tuesday’s announcement, amongst the myriad of things about the Nokia Lumia 925, Nokia also talked about the Nokia Lumia 928. At one point we were greeted to a video recording of Ed Sheeran, filmed on the Nokia Lumia 928 to show off the HAAC microphones developed for Nokia (eh hadtocopyasta?).

Ed Sheeran encourages the audience to go film him on their Nokia Lumias.

Good pick with Ed Sheeran. He’s very current and very popular atm.

Video: Nokia Lumia 925 vs Samsung Galaxy SIV vs HTC One

Posted: 15 May 2013 09:07 AM PDT

925 vs sgsiv vs oneThe latest high end devices from Samsung, Nokia and HTC are compared by the folks at PocketNow during the 925′s launch in London. It’s nice to see things evening out in terms of the high end Lumias being slimmer, lighter and funnily enough levelling out too in terms of ‘apps’ and we hear it’s now down to how you like to interact with your phone (and perhaps other differentiating features like the camera?).

Anyway, check it out

Gizmodo- Nokia Lumia 925 – this is the Windows Phone that you’ll want. The Verge calls 925 ‘Stunning’…

Posted: 15 May 2013 08:57 AM PDT

gizmodo 925

I saw this post earlier on in the morning whereby Gizmodo really liked the new Nokia Lumia 925, saying it’s the Windows Phone You’ll want.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/05/nokia-lumia-925-hands-on-this-is-the-windows-phone-youll-want/

NokConv have collected some more impressions.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/05/14/what-the-worlds-saying-about-the-nokia-lumia-925-2/

TheVerge calls the 925 ‘Stunning’. They say it’s the best Lumia yet, but doesn’t feel it’s quite enough. Why? Everyone seems to be feeling that the folks at Redmond are holding Nokia back. I mean who isn’t thinking that at the moment except Ballmer and Co? What are you doing MS peeps? Are you happy slowly chugging away whilst the world moves on from your almost backward time travelling speed? What’s the Jurassic era like eh?

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/14/4327078/nokia-lumia-925-hands-on-photos-video

Chris Davies from SlashGear says this is the best looking Windows Phone 8 Nokia’s given to date.

http://www.slashgear.com/nokia-lumia-925-hands-on-14281793/

TheNextWeb says it’s the best Windows Phone money can buy.

Lumiapps: BBC iPlayer available for Nokia Lumia Windows Phone (8) video demo on Nokia Lumia 920

Posted: 15 May 2013 08:47 AM PDT

mnb(10)These are one of the apps that you just never thought would make an appearance on Windows Phone due to us waiting for it for so long, but now it’s finally here. :D No not the blahblahgram (we’ve got alternatives now anyway), but BBC iPlayer.

This first version allows you to watch and listen to TV and Radio that has been previously available on the BBC for watching later. There’s no support it seems yet for liveTV though you could watch live TV (not just from the BBC) with the TVCatchup app. Something I would have perhaps liked is the option to download to watch it later. Useful on the go when you might not have a solid connection. Speaking of connection, yes you can still use BBC iPlayer over your data connection.

TV works quite well, just tap on what you want and it will play (in landscape). You can find videos either from the featured list, most popular, by channel, categories and by date. Videos will resume from where you last left off if you leave the app or just click back on it. The live tile will also show what was last watched/listened to.

Radio plays in landscape initially but you don’t have to keep that window there. Radio can be played in the background and you can pause/resume from anywhere using the volume keys (which is universal for Windows Phone music controls).

Pros:

  • Good quality stream
  • TV and Radio, arranged in various formats
  • Works over 3G/Network data
  • Fast interaction (when the connection sees fit)
  • Free
  • Live Tile indication for last watched

Cons:

  • Seems buggy in places (maybe connection error)
  • Missing features (See below)

For the next iteration I would like

  • Download option
  • Metro UI perhaps to swipe between radio/tv/whatever instead of scrolling down?
  • Landscape UI

Video: Double tap to Wake Demoed on the Lumia 925 & 920

Posted: 15 May 2013 01:24 AM PDT

8dac8d6eaefde6b46a0d8353f61e88d8Our buddy Sam got a quick video showing off the double tap to wake feature on both the Lumia 920 and the 925, some were skeptical about it coming to the 920 due to needing some “hardware optimization” but it apparently works just fine. The real question is how will an always on screen fair?

Video: Nokia Lumia 925, no iPhone 4 style death grip on external antenna (metal)

925 antenna aluminium death grip no

Phew, I’m just about to head off to clinic but I’ve got a minute or two to share this video. Since you’ve seen a few hands on before we’ll focus more towards what’s seen on the end of the video which is a short demo of how holding the phone whichever way you like won’t degrade the signal (I’ll post the other hands on stuff later when I get back from the hospital//uni shift)

Oddly enough, we’re downstairs in the basement of Victoria House (at least we had to climb down some stairs to get to the venue it seemed) at there was a full signal. Holding it (though briefly) in a grip didn’t change the signal strength for the worse. I met Mark Squires from Nokia yesterday who was also really pleased with the antenna performance on the 925. Although it might not seem the most exciting thing, it has a lot of behind the scenes innovations too (hopefully there’s a video from Nokia somewhere explaining why this works so well for the Lumia 925).

Jump to 02:18 in the video to see the antenna bit. Look at the time on there, 11:48 on launch day – minutes before having to dash off for the taxi back to Uni yesterday. Hah. And now I’ve got to head off back there again. Laters folks :)

Nokia Creative Studio Updated; Tilt-Shift, Color Pop & Collage added

Posted: 14 May 2013 10:39 PM PDT

Creative Studio

There were some videos floating around yesterday, showing off Creative Studio, Nokia’s Lumia Exclusive photo editing suite for Windows Phone. The videos showed a new “Blur” and “Play” mode. I figured these would be “unlocked” in the Amber update. Thankfully, we need not wait.

In Blur, you have the option to focus in on an object, or a radial tilt-shift.

  • Focus Object: Choose a particular part of the image to “be in focus”. You simply draw an outline on what you want to stay in focus, then you draw a line around that object. It’s a really neat feature, one that I’ve been wanting for a LONG time.
  • Radial tilt-shift: This is similar to the above, but in a radial fashion. What you do with this, is drag the circle over the object you wish to keep in focus, and resize it using a “pinch” gesture.

In the new Play mode, you have the option to “pop” colour, and also create a collage of images.

  • Colour Pop: Choose elements in the image to show their colour. From what I’ve played around with, if other parts of the image contain that colour, they will also be visible. The rest will be greyscale.
  • Collage: This is self explanatory in my eyes. Simply select several photos and Creative Studio will automatically stitch them together in a collage form.

The only issue I’ve found so far is that the images get saved into the “Saved Pictures” Album in the gallery, yet, they don’t get assigned with their new creation date, hence the images appear all over the place. The second little issue I have is not being able to resize the images in the collage view, and choose which images go where. You can choose the order deliberately, but it may take some time understanding which order to put them in. I’m sure this will be fixed in the next update.
EDIT: “You can actually rearrange the pictures by holding down and drop it whereever you want.”

Mike_CS_Demo
I created an image earlier that combines the new features into one image. Obviously the Blur (one of me and my Mum on Mother’s day) isn’t perfect, but it looks pretty decent if you ask me. The one of the shoes shows off Colour Pop, and kicking the Soccer Ball is the Opal Filter and radial tilt-shift on the ball itself.

You should get a notification on your device, if not, here is the direct link.

Cheers Antoine for the tip!
