Video: MS promo for Nokia Lumia 928 – The Best Low Light Smartphone Camera – “better than iPhone/Galaxy”

Posted: 20 May 2013 03:20 PM PDT

Pose reminds me of one of Ali’s pics haha

Whilst this is again, not a WP specific feature, it is very nice to see Microsoft backing the only meaningful WP manufacturer by pointing out some of their unique features.

The Nokia lumia 928 does of course feature the best low light performance, not simply due to OIS but also helped by Xenon flash to freeze moments in time. (Though low light sans flash may go to 925 now)

Take a look at the hands on for the new Jolla OS Phone fresh today.

There’s a quick tour of the hardware and the OS.

The colour options look very Nokia atm no?

The peeking whilst video is in play reminds me of Swipe UI on the N9 a bit, though this has added some additional functionality to peeking (not just what’s in the background)

Cheers Vilja for the heads up!

Next Generation Xbox (720?)to be revealled tomorrow. Kinect 2? 3D? Cloug Gaming?

Even more announcements. This seems to be the official channel as it’s followed by NokiaUK (hopefully no autofollowing going on like the main Nokia account :p).

The next generation of Xbox is going to be revealled tomorrow. I wonder how much further they’ll integrate the ecosystem together, including Nokia Lumia Smartglass features. Halo for Windows Phone please :D and other more ‘REAL’ xbox connections (games/kinect things rather than points).

Kinect 2 should be fun :D . This post was from nearly a year ago now…

Never need to upgrade hardware?

Michael: I saw someone post earlier about a new link, that now takes you to the Xbox page. Will Xbox Fusion be the name of the next console? Kinect 2? Xbox 3 with Kinect? Who knows! But we don’t need to wait long!

Nokia’s Jussi Mäkinen congratulates Jolla crew on their first phone

I still remember my first glimpse of Jussi Mäkinen when he demoed the Nokia N900 for the first time and later the Nokia N9. Jussi’s working on the new Ashas now (R&D, Design, Product marketing) which many are describing as being sort of mini N9 esque.

Whilst Nokia is in competition with Jolla for consumers, The trail of Maemo-MeeGo-Nokia across these two Finnish companies is still evident. Jussi just tweeted congratulations to Jolla on unveilling their first product. He says he knows they’ve been working so hard and wishes Jolla good luck :) . Aww, nice. It’s not all about fighting talk.

Video Promo: Jolla Revealled – looks a bit like a Nokia N9 from the front

Posted: 20 May 2013 03:13 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 11.10.53Here’s a little promo for the new Jolla Phone. In the renders, the front especially reminds me of the Nokia N9. The colourful matte back is also kinda N9-like in a way.

All the comments in the YouTube video seem to think so too.

Cheers Muerte for the heads up.

Lumia 720 Video Capture Front & Rear Camera Vs. Lumia 920

Posted: 20 May 2013 02:17 AM PDT

DSC02784One of the things that impressed me about the Lumia 720 back at MWC was the video quality, sure it only captured 720p but it was impressive, especially the front facing camera.

The FFC on the 720 has the same 1.3 mp sensor/720p capable as the Lumia 920 (with the same wide angle lens). So I thought it would be cool to compare the two; another factor I wanted to compare was the audio recording  seeing how the HTC One uses the same microphone from the 720 it’s bound to be good right?

Check out the videos below for video samples and comparisons and let me know which one you thought did better, the 920 or the 720?

*I know the 920 records form the main camera in 1080p; so I filmed in full HD then compressed it down to match the 720′s output.

Default WP8 gallery making some photos look worse on your Lumia? – try HD PhotoViewer for now

Posted: 20 May 2013 01:10 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 08.56.05Users on reddit have noticed a weird phenomena in the gallery of their WP8 phones. Actually this was similar to an issue I had on WP7/7.5 devices. You take a photo but the gallery doesn’t show the image as to how it would look on a different display. In the old gen-1 devices, the colours would always be off until you zoomed in.

http://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/1em3pe/why_photos_look_soft_in_windows_phones_camera_roll/

This time, it appears that your images appear ‘soft’.

HD photo-viewer is used above and below (picture on the right)

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 08.58.29I thought an app I had downloaded had messed up the auto-focus (one of the ones that alters manual focus). I can’t say it happens to all my photos like the WP7/7.5 issue.

Notice that by default it’s already zoomed in 38%. You have to pan side to side to see the whole image.

One thing I really like about HD photoviewer is that pictures within albums are organised with the most recent images on top. I find it so annoying (and it used to be a problem on other Nokia devices I had) where you had to scroll and scroll and scroll to see some images you recently took. Yes, the camera gallery can be swiped easily to see immediately recent pictures but that’s not what I’m referring to.

Diagnostics Application wp_ss_20130520_0001

The difference seemed more apparent when I zoomed in.

It’s a lot clearer on HD photoviewer.

wp_ss_20130520_0004 wp_ss_20130520_0003

Perhaps it’s part of the design to ensure smoothness? HD photoviewer does warn about performance issues on phones with less RAM. Or is this just something MS looked over?

Video: #ThingsKidsSay – and how to shut them up with a Lumia and Kid’s Corner in new MS ad

Posted: 20 May 2013 12:53 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 08.48.33This promo video from WPUK on YouTube shows a child asking all sorts of questions and saying all sorts of typical kids things to the point that it does get annoying. So what does the parent do? Give a Nokia Lumia 920 with Kid’s Corner.

21st Century parenting. It used to be the babysitting TV now it’s phones and tablets.
