Rumour: Nokia Lumia 9XX for Verizon?

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 05:50 PM PDT

I would normally discount random tweets for a rumour, but Viipottaja and Peter_L were apparently in discussion about these tweets so there may be some truth in it.

A tweet from someone based in NY, a Nokia PureView fan, said:

Finally got. Hands on lumia 9XX for verizon, can you guess it???what phone is that??? Hint wp8 of course :)

https://twitter.com/NokiaPureView

And another tweet that read:

Another hint: wireless charging and thinner lighter better #SwitchToLumia

It could absolutely be nothing. There were some random conversations before by others about a possible Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon and well that’s in pictures everywhere.

Could it be a 920 varient for Verizon? Some speculate Verizon would have to wait out until early 2013 for their 9XX variant whilst AT&T bask in the temporary exclusivity. Who knows.

The in-depth story of MeeGo/Maemo (English translation)

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 02:51 PM PDT

Because translation sites can’t be trusted, especially when attempting Finnish, here is a translation of the gripping Story of MeeGo/Maemo into English by Finnish peeps.

Apologies still for the lack of summary, just under a tonne of work at Uni/Hospital.

Cheers Ei NimeƤ and Timo for the heads up!

Pricings For Lumia Charging Accessories through Clove UK (Order Now)

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 11:06 AM PDT

Although we don’t yet have a solid price on either of the WP8 Lumia brothers, Clove UK have begun taking pre-orders for the full set of Charging accessories (minus the JBL Power-up). The pricings are as follows:

Converted into Euros thanks to Harangue
820 Wireless charging shell ~ €25
Wireless Charging Plate ~ €70
Wireless Charging Stand ~ €85
Wireless Charging Pillow by Fatboy ~ €100
JBL Playup ~ €180

The accessories are available for pre-order now, but with no solid delivery date “At the moment we do not have a release date confirmed, but the accessories are expected to be available for the launch of the handsets”.

I’d really like to see how carriers will bundle these accessories alongside the phones, seeing as the right bundle could create a great incentive to buy; especially when properly subsidized. So what’s your Must have accessory?

I’m a little bit strapped for time but I thought I’d share this instead of waiting before I get the chance to read it myself. The original story is in Finnish but you can translate it if you don’t know that awesome language (though do note the high likelihood of translation error).

Video: Nokia Lumia 810, T-Mobile’s first Windows 8 phone

Posted: 10 Oct 2012 08:39 AM PDT

Here’s another video hands on of the Nokia Lumia 810 from T-Mobile. It’s their first WP8 device.

For some reason, they still can’t even show the tile homescreen.

Note the removable back cover, which you can swap out (get some wireless charging action going on there).

Nokia Facehugger face sensor?

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 10:58 PM PDT

I thought at first it was a ‘The Onion’ style spoof or some error in translation to “Facehugger”. But the aim of this R&D project is quite interesting.

http://www.kauppalehti.fi/etusivu/nokian+uusi+innovaatio+naamahalaaja/201210279819

The whole point is to add more sensors, this time, sensing the movement of your face, measuring facial expressions and so forth. Finnish is apparently a very difficult thing for online translators to cope with so there might be quite a lot lost in translation.

The article says it may be useful in sport and for those with disabilities. I’m not sure what the implementation may be, but it could span from either text based communication based on facial gestures or activation of certain features.

It mentions something further about attempting work on sunglasses. Indeed we’ve seen R&D concept videos of Nokia’s venture into what looks like project glass years before google ever came up with the their version.

Nokia launches portable solar charger in Kenya

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 10:39 PM PDT

Nokia have apparently launched the DC-40 solar charger in Kenya. This is aimed at a surprising 80% of Kenyas that are said to lack regular access to electricity. At 1250 Sh, that’s only around 14USD or 9GBP.

When under direct sunlight, the Nokia DC-40 will take only 4 hours to charge a 1000mAh battery.

General manager for Nokia, East Africa says:

There are numerous advantages to this solution, including being able to service consumers outside of regular electricity supply, or those who need a quick charge on the go…

However, perhaps the greatest benefit is the cost saving achieved by being able to harness the natural resource of the sun…

Nokia prides itself on its ongoing sustainability programs to minimize power usage. This solar charger provides an extremely environmentally friendly solution that is free of CO2 emissions.
