NokConv: Fueling the future of digital maps

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 05:20 AM PDT

Quick heads up on Nokia’s Navteq True technology which gathers a tremendous amount of data.

Navteq True, composed of four technologies:

  • 360° LIDAR: Rotating lasers capture 1.3 million 3D digital data points every second, which generates a virtual 3D model of the world around the vehicle.
  • Position Sensors: GPS and military grade Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors measure the vehicle's speed, orientation and even gravitational forces to provide highly precise location references to every point within the virtual 3D model.
  • Panoramic Cameras: These cameras layer in a 360° images synchronized to the 3D LIDAR points—giving us the most true to life representation of the world
  • High Resolution Multi-View Cameras: High-resolution images give us the opportunity to increase automation so we can more quickly bring advanced location content to more people.

Cheers Viipottaja for the tip!

Low light comparison: Nokia Lumia 920 vs Nokia 808 PureView vs iPhone 5 vs SGS III vs HTC OneX

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Quite an interesting post comparing the Nokia Lumia 920 against the Nokia 808 PureView, SGSIII, iPhone 5, and HTC OneX. Whilst some say it’s not fair to compare something optimised for low light (920), I totally think it is because it’s not exactly guaranteed that Nokia’s claims will work as intended or if it is better, would it be significantly better.

Against something like the SGS III, One X, iPhone 5, the 920 is a clear winner.

http://www.test-mobile.fr/actualites/nokia-lumia-920-comparatif-photo-de-nuit-avec-iphone-5-one-x-galaxy-s3-et-808-pv-046873/

Check out the SGSIII below.

808 PureView is no slouch however.

Note, in these instances where the subject is much too far away, flash wouldn’t really help.

This is just a screenshot of the thumbnails.

In some instances, the only way for the competition to have a semi visible photo is to have HDR on.

I wonder how it would fare if indeed the 808 settings had been tweaked for ultimate low light (and also if 920 was put in night mode).

Just imagine OIS Floating lens pureview with a large N8 or 808 sensor at 12mp. MMMMMMMmmmmmm. Lovely low light action :D

MS looking at 3D tiles, patents live cubes and whatnot

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Remember Peter Lackman’s concept back in April last year?

http://mynokiablog.com/2011/04/19/nokia-windows-phone-7-ui-concept-live-cubes/

It appears Microsoft like that 3D tiles nature and have patented it.

The implementation is discussed further over at:

http://www.patentbolt.com/2012/10/microsoft-looks-to-future-3d-tiles-for-next-gen-windows.html

It’s not just cubes. The toast notification might become cylindrical.

I think 3D tiles and cubes fit the WP Metro thing. Just take a look at SurfCube and how nicely that handles gestures.

Microsoft Patents “3D Tiles UI Concept” – MyNokiaBlog Did it First.

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 12:16 AM PDT

Remember the image above? If not allow me to jog your memory, about 18 Months ago (April 2011) one of our very own readers and contributors “Peter” came up with a concept of 3D cubes for WP, which would allow tiles to deliver more content, without the need for more tiles on the actual screen (each tiles delivers more content by being a multi sided cube, rather than a single 2D square- meaning that each tile could deliver at least up to 4 times the content without taking any more space).

It was a great concept, and seemed pretty much ready to hit the presses; check out the full concept here: http://mynokiablog.com/2011/04/19/nokia-windows-phone-7-ui-concept-live-cubes/

Well it turns out that Microsoft have just been issued an eerily similar patent, that covers the same concept (of course MNB’s renders look prettier):

3A. 3D Icons or Tiles in Various Stages of Rotation

Example:  Microsoft describes the user being able to manually tap on a panel of a music application and the icon will rotate to display another panel indicating the currently playing song. The panel will either automatically rotate back to the front icon (e.g. photo of artist) or will be manually turned by the user at will.

2A. 3D Icon receiving update could automatically flip to reveal content

For example, the icon could be associated with an email application, and the email application could receive an email as an update to the application. Based on the update to the application, the system 100 could rotate the icon in three dimensions 130. For example, as shown at 112, the icon could rotate in three dimensions automatically when the application associated with the icon is updated.

Microsoft’s patent goes a bit further to cover all sort of 3D shapes besides cubes, including Cylinders, polygons, spheres and basically any 3D shape you can think of:

4A. 3D Tiles or Icons could be cylindrical in Form

Microsoft even goes a step further, implementing menus and options into each tile (which would probably work best on the “large” sized tiles in WP8:

5A. Users will have the ability to work with set-up Menus for each Tile or Icon

All in all it’s a great concept, and a pretty sound one too; check out the video Peter made alongside his original post:

I’m not pointing any fingers, but Microsoft’s patent was applied for in Q2 2011, and approved in Q3 2012, Peter’s original post date was April 19th 2011. #JustSayin

WP8: Live Wallpaper, Bluetooth sending and NFC tap to share

Posted: 26 Oct 2012 12:00 AM PDT

More filling in gaps. So now we have drag and drop for those who prefer that kind of transfer. Some people might like cloud transfers/wifi transfers but for others, BT may be better for them.

In the various send options we can see Bluetooth, and scrolling down, tap to send for NFC capable devices.

NFC tap share is something Nokia has been doing for a while since the C7.

Lastly, eagle eyed Viipottaja noticed that the app list contained something called Live wallpaper. Is this ‘live’ in the way that tiles are active and are in motion or ‘live’ in the way that Microsoft names their products?
