Leak: Lumia 920T CDMA Chinese Variant of 920

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 11:10 AM PDT

What we’re looking at is apparently a leaked variant of the Lumia 920 destined for the oriental land of China. In the past we’ve seen Chinese variants of the Lumia 800 (the 800C) which has apparently been a huge success (some reports claim that it was outselling the iPhone). Failing to capitalize on the Chinese market would be a huge mistake, which hopefully Nokia are avoiding; especially since the iPhone 5 has yet to be released in China (in fact it might not be released at all due to some legal issues). Personally I think that no matter how big of a fuss Nokia make in the US, teaming up with all the carriers and giving out exclusivity deals that would still only come out to a fraction of the sales they could make in China if they doubled down their efforts there; but then again the US is the trendsetter at the moment influencing most of Europe and the rest of the world, hopefully we’ll see some ripple effects in the near future.

Note: It was in fact Someone in China who leaked the first ever images of the Lumia 920, which we all carefully dissected and prodded for clues: http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/07/leaked-yellow-nokia-lumia-w-wp8-think-lumia-900-with-curved-screen/

Jolla gets new CEO already, Marc Dillon at the helm. Hurmola focusing on Sailfish.

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 08:24 AM PDT

TechCrunch reports that Jolla has a new CEO by the name of Marc Dillon. Ex CEO, Jussi Hurmola is focusing on the ‘SailFish’ strategy.

A Jolla spokesperson told TC:

Regular rotation is a part of our company culture that keeps us agile and our way of working well matched to the most important tasks at hand

http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/15/meego-mobile-startup-jolla-names-coo-as-new-ceo-as-it-preps-for-sailfish-os-launch-former-ceo-to-focus-on-sailfish-strategy/

This is a good move as the product delivery is our #1 focus. Marc has been in charge of the engineering and product development right from the start and the move will now maximise the delivery efficiency. At the same time, it's elementary that we also look beyond the first launch and Jussi's new role i.e. focusing on further developing the Sailfish strategy and the whole ecosystem will be very important for Jolla

Cheers Muerte for the tip!

Accessories: Nokia DC-16 Charging Stick

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 01:38 AM PDT

DC-16 with my Black & White N9, alongside my original Cyan N9 shell

Recently got a DC-16 Portable charger, and I must say, it is super cool, and rather funky looking. The DC-16 is a portable charging stick designed to charge mobile phones and devices via Micro-USB connection. It contains a 2200 mAh battery, bigger than any of the batteries on Nokia phones.(The Lumia 920 has a 2000 mAh battery). It can be used though with any USB cable eg. iPhone/iPod.

The charger comes in four colours; white, cyan, magenta and black. The colour options clearly reflect the N9/Lumia line-up pre-WP8. The USB to Micro-USB that comes in the box matches the colour of the stick itself. It’s not a long cable, but any longer would be cumbersome for portability in my opinion. You can always get a bigger cable if you’d like.

The unit I have is magenta, which completes my colour collection. It’s easy to use, simply plug the usb cable into your computer, with Micro-USB into the charger to charge it (or you can use a phone charger to charge it like I do) and when you need to charge your device, simply put the USB into the charger, with the Micro-USB into your phone.

On the Micro-USB end, there is a battery icon, with 4 dots above it. When charging, and when in use, these dots light up, according to the current charge capacity. You can also check the current charge, by pressing the battery icon at anytime.

I fully charged my N9 with it, and there was still some juice left. Incredible!

Here are a few pics I took:

Video: Epic Nokia 808 PureView cinematic style with Christopher Westerholm

Last month we showcased a Nokia 808 PureView video by .

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/01/video-nokia-808-pureview-cinema-style/

Here’s part 2 of the continued epicness as well as some hero style music to get you pumped.

Remember to choose 1080p for highest quality! This is the second test of shooting a cinemastyle video with the Nokia 808 Pureview. I wanted to se how the 808 camera could handle a scene with alot of detail in it. And a forest is full of trees and leaves. Perfect to stress the highdetail of the camera. I shot this flat with contrast and sharpness dialed down to later add color correction in magic bullet colorista and looks. And it looks quite amazing with lots of detail and smooth moves.

Pretty cool what some stabilisation, extra widescreen (crop top and bottom) and epic music can do (and obviously skill :) .

Here’s some hardware stabilisation with the 808

Electric Pikachu Yellow – I choose you! Nokia Lumia 920 in yellow, MNB reader’s choice

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 12:17 AM PDT

After doing the last post with a poll from Alex, I noticed I had not updated yet on the results for the poll before that which asked our readers their colour preference for the Nokia Lumia 920.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/10/03/poll-what-colour-nokia-lumia-920-would-you-choose/

Initially, in the first 200 votes, red was winning out (and Cyan was not even an official colour). At 1675 votes, yellow just edges out in front at 22.33% (maybe biased as I did post pictures of lots of yellow things I liked :p)

The yellow Nokia Lumia 920 is the flagbearer in terms of what’s prominently displayed whenever the 920 is demoed. Although such a ‘harsh’ or overtly bright colour, it’s garnered quite a lot of fans who perhaps have gotten used to Nokia’s bright new colours that has moved away from the boring blacks and white (so much so that they are now setting trends/clones).

Surprisingly, Grey came out second at 17.61%. Possibly due to Harangue’s gallery showing it off.

Third at 16.42% was the unofficial (now official) Cyan.

Fourth was the usually top scoring black at 16.36%.

Fifth at 13.13% was red

Sixth was the usual rare later edition, white, at 12.72%.

Only 1.42% wanted a colour other than what was available. Perhaps those colours are already available but in the 820?

MNBRG: Problem with Belle FP2 alphanumeric keyboard?§

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 12:15 AM PDT

We received an email from Symbian fan, Alex, who says that since the Belle FP2 update, his alphanumeric keyboard has become unusable. Are you experiencing similar issues?

Hi Jay,

I’m not sure if you use it and are aware, but the new T9/Alphanumeric
keyboard on Belle FP2 (e.g. on the 808) is pretty terrible and a big
step back in usability. I’ve posted about this on Nokia support here:
http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nseries-and-Symbian-Smartphones/Belle-FP2-T9-Alphanumeric-keyboard-MUCH-worse-than-before/td-p/1571236
and on AAS here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/15939_How_to_use_T9-style_keypad_inp.php#disqus_thread

It seems plenty of people agree with me, as you can see. I’m trying to
get Nokia to take notice and do something about it and wondered if you
would consider putting a poll on MNB asking if people agree or not,
please? (i.e. is the new FP2 T9/Alphanumeric keyboard better or worse
than before FP2?)

If you do, please could you make it clear this is specifically only
about the T9/Alphanumeric keyboard and not the portrait or landscape
qwerty, which I think everyone agrees are a definite improvement! The
problem is that a great many people find the T9 keyboard the fastest and
easiest to use (or did, before the changes). And obviously text input is
critical on a phone, so this is a signficant story that is worth running.

Many thanks,
Alex

Video: Nokia Tires

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 09:53 PM PDT

Check this out, it’s a video that shows Nokia branded tires.

As  you might be aware, Nokia started out as a maker of pulp and paper, later making cables and then merging with the Finnish Rubber Works company to become Nokia Corporation. Nokia only started producing mobile phones once it acquired Mobira Oy – Nokia’s phone division which surpassed the giant motorola, holding strong for 14 years.
