More Info on Lumia 822 for Verizon; Rumored at $49.99

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 12:26 PM PDT

The folks over at wmpoweruser have gotten their hands on a couple more images of the heavily rumored/leaked Verizon variant of the Lumia 820/810 currently going under the name Lumia 822. A direct quote from the tipster at WMP:

In terms of Windows 8, on the device Bing Maps will be branded Nokia Maps.  Nokia Drive can download over 55 voices, including "surfer dude". Documents can be shared via Bluetooth, tap2send, or outlook, and photos via tap2send, Bluetooth, messaging, outlook, Facebook, LinkedIn, OneNote and twitter.

When application are tapped and held, besides pinning to the start screen one can also now pin to Kids Corner. Windows Phone 7 apps work flawlessly.

When connected to a Windows 7 PC the device is not recognized, and is not mounted as a removable drive. Zune also does not recognize it.

Voice dictation in email works very well, but there is no obvious way to send an email completely hands-free.

The 16 GB handset has a microSD card slot. The device does feature wireless charging, but the shell is not removable or replaceable. The handset feels plasticky, much like the HTC Trophy, and is somewhat taller and wider, and will retail for only $49.99.

Does this mean that WP8 devices are incompatible with Windows 7 and earlier? I hope not since that would be incredibly stupid (A repetition of the same mistake made with WP7 and Macs)- I’m more likely to chalk this down as due to pre-final version of the OS as well as incomplete driver compatibility *fingers crossed*. One feature I really want to see in WP8 is full OFFLINE voice dictation IN ALL APPS, not just the search engine as it is now; hopefully we’ll see that soon as it seems to have appeared in the email app. regardign the pricing $49.99 sounds quite attractive, however I’m not sure what the price range of medium-specced Android devices are in the US (I’m assuming alot of them are free?). With a price range of the 822 at $50 I think it’s safe to assume that the 920 will retail for a bit higher than the Lumia 900 initially did (gut feeling is around $150).

*Side-note what the hell is Nokia Maps + Alpha?

Camera Shootout: 808 Pureview Vs. iPhone5, SGS3, OneX, Xperia T

I could sit here and justify why we love camera comparisons, and how useful/reliable they are for our everyday life; but one of the simple facts is that Nokia usually make great cameras; so we like to play to our strengths. Here’s a comparison the folks over at recombu carried out pitting the 808 (the undisputed king) against the iPhone 5, the oneX, the SGS3 and the Xperia T; none of these phones are slouches when it comes to cameras in any way (except perhaps the Xperia T- first I ever hear of it). By their standards the 808 came out on top 4 out of 5 times, losing only  once in normal landscape mode to the iPhone 5 and coming in second.

The very best of the bunch is unsurprisingly the Nokia 808 PureView. A Xenon flash is worth its weight in gold when you're trying to take a low-light photo and you just need to glance over the results to see how incredible detail is on the subjects. Once

Check out the review with all the beautiful pictures here: http://recombu.com/mobile/news/iphone-5-galaxy-s3-onex-pureview-camera-compariaon_M18398.html

Side note- I know that in terms of sheer photography the 808 is a winner, but for people who don’t understand the concept of a good picture the iPhone (mostly the 4 & 4s) always seemed to produce more appealing images since they Over-exposed Over-saturated some of the colors The iPhone 5 seems to have cut down on the over Saturation and upped the quality, while keeping the pictures looking crisp and attractive; so kudos to them, however it seems to struggle in direct sunlight producing a horrible purple flare, but then again we’re probably holding it wrong.

Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon swans into FCC?

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 02:52 AM PDT

Engadget has spotted the RM-845 which they reckon is the Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon (as it has  Verizon’s CDMA and LTE bands). The 822 is currently not yet officially announced (though the 810 for T-Mobile is).

Note the MicroSD slot as with the 820.

Weekend Watch: Nokia 808 PureView and Topolino70 – Misty Morning at a Lake

I’m glad Topolino70 is getting the audience he deserves as his stuff really shows off the great Nokia cameras.

Here he is again with the Nokia 808 PureView, the SuperKing of pocketable cameras in a video titled, “Misty Morning at a Lake”. It looks quite eerie, but with Gymnopedia as the song, it’s quite relaxing. This would totally work mashed up with some scary halloween track too.
