My Dream Nokia #70: Titanium Nokia Lumia FX800

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 12:36 PM PDT

My Dream Nokia #70 comes from  Vilim Plužarić, an industrial designer and philosopher from Zagreb. He’s based in Croatia and is working as a freelance designer as well as writing articles for Gadgeterija.net. He previously designed concepts for the iPhone 5 and works on the “Apple Conspiracy project”. I’m pleased he’s taking an interest in Nokia concepts too.

Vilim emailed us his to help spread his new concept called the Nokia Lumia FX800. It’s somewhat higher end than the 920 with a larger 4.65″ display.

This is the back story behind the titanium built Lumia FX800

The story behind Lumia FX800 is a true rivalry to iPhone 5. It draws its inspiration from 2002 model 8910 Titanium in terms of material, stealth-bomber-looking X7 and of course, the already iconic design of N9/Lumia 800. Its name represents the visual effect, the “FX”. This one is not in color, as opposed to other Lumia range. It will come in titanium unibody and packed in extremely thin chassis.
It’s intended is to be limited edition, high-priced, high-class and high-style smartphone that puts style over innovation. Innovation is presented through Lumia 920, but it comes at the cost of bulky body. This one has almost same specs, without innovative technologies, but on the other hand, it comes in a sleek and classy form. It’s purpose is not to do harm to Lumia 920 sales, but to cover style-conscious market, and certainly market largely covered by iPhone.
It utilizes the same 4.65″ AMOLED screen seen in 2011 model from Samsung, the Galaxy Nexus. Nokia uses those AMOLEDs for their Lumias 800 and 900 with addition of their own ClearBlack technology. It is the larger screen than in Luima 900, but it keeps the same device dimensions. Unfortunately, there are no non-PenTile HD AMOLEDs from Samsung right now for the diagonals below 5.5″, so it has to suffice.

Feel free to contact me in case you have some questions and remarks.

Very slim, same footprint as the 900 except with less bezel so more screen.

About "My Dream Nokia"

I'm sure you've dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don't you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don't need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title "My Dream Nokia" and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Cheers Vilim Plužarić!

Symbian App Review: Ebook Reader Demoed on 808

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 09:41 AM PDT

It’s been a while since we’ve covered any apps at all, let alone one for Symbian; but here’s one for all the book worms out there. Ebook reader (pro) by Artsoftic is a great reader that carries out all the functions any basic reader should have, and a bit more (but as you can see in the video my version of the app somehow ended up being in Russian so I wasn’t to sure about the options).

On a side note the search on the Nokia store REALLY sucks, searching by the developers name doesn’t work; and searching for “ebook reader” gives me a bunch of spam results and apps that have been resubmitted ten times. Absolute mess.

Weekend Watch: Surface Commercial – Pretty Awesome.

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 08:32 AM PDT

The Surface Tablet, complete with Nokia style iconic cyan/magenta[red]/black colours won the tech blogosphere around with some high attention to detail you’d expect from the Jobsian Fruit company.

One highly precise but possibly easily overlooked aspect is the sound that the stand makes as the hinge clicks into place (makes me remember the video where Nokia designers talk about the sound the N97 hinge made). That satisfying hinge sound takes quite a prominent role in the video below. (As well as the sound when the magnet clips from the super slim keyboard latches on).

I don’t know about you but I really like what they’ve done with it. Modern, interesting, memorable and leaves me with an impression that this is a device to watch out for. Nokia marketing peeps, take note please.

I love the focus on the hinge, on the keyboard part, and on the metro UI. Unique things for this particular product subset.

I love the colours, the music, the host of dancers (all very good looking peeps, the fit ladies, the well groomed men, the family, the guy who looks like JLG – makes it easier to like the product somewhat)

Watch “Movement,” the premiere commercial for MICROSOFT SURFACE from Director Jon M. Chu (DS2DIO, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The LXD, Step Up 3D).

“From touch to type, office to living room, from your screen to the big screen, you can see more, share more, and do more with Surface.”

BTW, I also liked MS’ own promo.

Not sure I’m interested in getting the Surface myself – especially at that resolution. I don’t know what MS was talking about when they’re saying their screen is easier to read. I’ll have to see it in person first.

WeekendRead: “What Does The Internet Think”

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 02:48 AM PDT

So I stumbled across this site called What Does The Internet Think, a search engine where your term is broken down into positive, negative, and in-differnet opinion across the internet. Here is how the site says it works:

Since launching, this has sparked up some discussion as to how it all works. Well, you can understand that I don't want to disclose too much of the 'algorithm' of the site. However: basically it searches based on associative (so far just English) sentences. The given search term is used in these sentences which are then sent off to the various search engines, counting the amount of results returned. (Sentences are double quoted before they are sent off, so as to make sure the search-engines search for occurrences of the *whole* sentence).

This, of course, produces questionable results which should not be taken very seriously. However, the more results (hits) returned, the more reliable these results can become. Do a search for George Bush and then Barack Obama, and you'll see that the internet is certainly not far off – or perhaps even in-sync – with the result you had in mind.

My advice would be to do 10 'obvious' searches, of which you are almost certain of the results, based on your perception of general opinion (e.g. 'beer', 'sex', 'sleeping', etc.) and then do 10 less obvious searches. If the first 10 convince you of even the slightest accuracy, the second 10 will perhaps be not as random as you thought.

Of course, this is far from accurate, but I thought I would have a go, searching Nokia, Nokia Lumia, Nokia N9, Symbian & iPhone5. Here are screenshots of the results:

Screen Shot 2012-10-20 at 7.27.21 PM Screen Shot 2012-10-20 at 7.27.39 PM Screen Shot 2012-10-20 at 7.27.54 PM Screen Shot 2012-10-20 at 7.28.19 PM Screen Shot 2012-10-20 at 8.34.47 PM

Overall Nokia, and related terms, seem to all be fairly positive, with the highest out of my search terms being Nokia N9, followed by Nokia Lumia, Nokia, Symbian and lastly iPhone 5.

Again, I know this isn’t conclusive in any way, but it is nice to see Nokia being ahead of the iPhone, even if it is solely wishful thinking.

Nokia Asha 205 gets leaked on Navifirm

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 01:10 AM PDT

It has been months since I looked on Navifirm, but every time I do, I find something news. This time was no exception.

We have previously seen leaked product codes for devices such as Nokia RM-838/852, etc  which were also quite a mystery, even for a while after they were first spotted. They turned out to be Asha and Lumia devices.

So for this device leak, we actually have a picture, well it is actually just a thumbnail, showing what we are led to believe is the Asha 205. As we know with all Asha devices, it will run S40.

Regards.

Nokia Lumia 820 coming to Carphone Warehouse, expected November 2012

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 12:09 AM PDT

Just a follow up to our last post that looked availabilities for the Nokia Lumia 920. DKM commented that whilst the 920 isn’t there, the 820 certainly is.

http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/news/coming-soon/nokia-lumia-820

An expected date has been set for around November. I really should have upgraded back in September but I’ve been holding out for its big brother, the 920 (in yellow).

It’s odd that the 920 isn’t in the UK carphone warehouse as it’s available in France (ThePhoneHouse)

Cheers DKM for the tip!
