Video: Marko Ahtisaari Talks About the Lumia 920′s Design

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 03:59 PM PST

Marko Ahtisaari, the head designer at Nokia, and the genius behind the Fabula design that first debuted in the N9, sits down and explains the design process behind the Lumia 920.

Marko starts off by mentioning that all eyes are on Nokia’s design (perhaps hinting at HTC’s recent tendency to be “inspired” by Nokia). He then talks about the design language  where they didn’t  make a product “for the sake of being different” but rather made it different to fit a certain function.

I really love this video, Marko’s way of talking is very soothing and reassuring, he knows what he’s talking about and is confident. Although I couldn’t help but be reminded of Apples Design videos, featuring their designer Jonathon Ives (who’s the only person on the planet who does less work than the Porsche designers- TopGear joke).

Amazon Lists Lumia 920 as Indefinitely Out of Stock, “Due to Tremendous Demand”- Only White & Black Left in Stock

Well Amazon have gone there, they’ve went into their cupboard, pulled out the “Tremendous” word, dusted it off and placed it on the Lumia 920. It’s not uncommon for Amazon to run out of stock, but claiming the demand is “tremendous” is a first for me (usually just “out of Stock” or “high Demand).

It also looks as if they have no idea when they’ll be getting additional stock (if at all) seeing how you can’t even pre-order/reserve a 920 for yourself; instead you only get an option to be notified by email once the stock has been replenished.

Edit:

It seems Amazon only have the White and black in stock @ $69.99, with no indication of how many are left, yet all signs point that they won’t be there much longer, so if you want to grab one soon act now-

Black Friday Deal: Lumia 810 Free on Contract from T-Mobile

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 03:32 PM PST

Ahh it’s that mystical time of the year were Thanks is given for all that we have, then we run off to buy dirt-cheap electronics and apparel; not that I’m complaining. T-Mobile has kicked off the Lumia discounts by knocking down the Lumia 810′s price from it’s usual $100-1$150 to a quite affordable $0.00. Black Friday is THE day to get your electronics shopping done, and according to the T-Mobile page this is a one day offer only, so if you’ve been waiting for an excuse to spoil yourself now would be the time.

-Note: the discount is only available on the T-Mobile official site, and not other resellers, seeing how over at Amazon the 810 is only available off contract for $499.

Pick it up at the T-Mobile black Friday page here: http://www.t-mobile.com/promotions/resourcetemplate.aspx?passet=Pro_Pro_BlackFriday

Nokia UK to Celebrate New Lumia Launch with Deadmau5 Concert; Win Tickets to Attend!

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 12:04 PM PST

Last year Nokia and Deadmau5 teamed up to bring an amazing 4D projection concert to unleash the Lumias upon the UK; regardless of how well they sold, the event was pretty darn awesome.

And now they’re back at it again; with a concert lined up to celebrate the new line.

Here’s a teaser for the concert itself:

And check out Nokia UK’s facebook page for a chance to win tickets to the concert here:

Check out the 4D projections from the previous Lumias launch, pretty darn sweet!

Analyst & Banks Buying Shares in Nokia, Despite Warning Others Not to Invest

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 11:51 AM PST

It seems that the so-called Investment advisers and banks can’t make up their minds, although most credit companies have rated Nokia’s stock at “junk” or at best “don’t buy” that doesn’t seem to have stopped them from making a move themselves. I’ve watched enough “Shark Tank” to know that it’s not uncommon to feign disinterest in a product/company just to get a better deal for yourself, and it seems that might be exactly what’s been going on.

Some of the largest names in financials and banking have increased their stakes in Nokia in surprising amounts:

In the face of extremely negative sentiment, two investment banks, namely Morgan Stanley (MS) and Goldman Sachs (GS), increased the number of Nokia shares they were holding in the last quarter. In the beginning of last quarter, Goldman Sachs held 61 million shares of Nokia. As of the end of the last quarter, the investment bank holds 116 million shares of the company. This indicates an increase of nearly 90%. As for Morgan Stanley, the bank held 4 million shares of the company in the beginning of the quarter, whereas, it ended up holding 32 million shares by the end of the quarter. This is an increase of nearly 700%.

Seems like an awkward decision to increase your stakes so much in a “Junk” company; on the other hand today Nokia’s stock broke the 3 dollar mark, which it has been flirting with for the past two months or so, closing at a respectable 12% increase for $3.31 a share. Are things starting to look up or is this just a passing trend? Fingers crossed for the former.

University Students in Finland Send a Lumia 920 into Space, Giving you the Chance to win the Worlds only Lumia 920 Space Edition

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 06:41 AM PST

Earlier today Nokia  students from a Finnish university tied a lumia 920 onto a weather balloon, sent it 30Km into the air creating the worlds first (and only) Lumia 920 space edition. Whoever collects the Lumia on its descent is free to keep it (provided it doesn’t end up in some sea); although it’s possible the balloon has already landed.

Correction, we initially mentioned that it was Nokia who released the ballon, when in fact it was a group of students from Aalto university in Finland who released the balloon to celebrate the midnight launch of the lumia 920 in Finland. Before launching the balloon they held a contest where the closest guess to where the balloon would land would get to keep the phone. Sorry for the mixup guys. And thanks to everyone who pointed it out.

Check out the launch here:

Video: New string tones for the new Lumia

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 01:56 AM PST

Another NokConv piece talks about the new Ringtones for the Nokia Lumia phones. You can listen to them at NokConv or your new Lumia.

BTW, the speakers on the Nokia Lumia 920 sound great; loud and crisp and will do these ringtones justice.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/11/09/new-string-tones-for-the-new-lumia/

BTW, in another related piece, I might have missed the story where Nokia got an orchestra and recorded the ringtones on a Nokia Lumia 920? I think Marko Aahtisaari mentioned it and I might have briefly seen a post but didn’t get around to it.

Cheers Viipottaja for the tip!

NokConv: Nokia Lumia 920 and the amazing resolution race

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 01:48 AM PST

One of the many talked about strong points in the Nokia Lumia 920 is its marvellously beautiful screen.

NokConv discusses the story behind the PureMotion HD+ Super Sensitive Screen of the Nokia Lumia 920.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/11/19/nokia-lumia-920-and-the-amazing-resolution-race/

The 15:9 aspect ratio was chosen for human usability.  HD+ to see a little bit more on the screen. PureMotion to have a fast, responsive screen, high brightness and CBD for superior outdoor visibility, Super Sensitive Screen so it works with more than just fingers. The beauty is that it’s all in one package.

Lumia 920 now available in Finland

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 12:19 AM PST

Just a quick post guys. Was watching the Slush Livestream and saw Marko Ahtisaari giving a talk on Design.

He mentioned that the Lumia 920 is now available in Finland. No official post from Nokia that I can find, but that is petty official enough to me.
