Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:15 PM PST In case you missed Jolla’s keynote from Slush, or just want to see it again, they have uploaded it. You can see it below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdLUJZR078k It was great to see some famous faces from the community up on stage. Really pleased with what they have brought to the table. It is different, yet familiar, especially for N9 users. Things like the widget-style multi-tasking, ambience and double tap to wake (like Harmattan) make me excited. I just hope that Jolla doesn’t take forever to get the devices into the hands of consumers. |

Video: Nokia Lumia 920 Destruction: What Does It Take? (AKA 3310′s son) Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:11 AM PST Nokia, as well as once a global giant in phones is still a current popular internet meme for being indestructible. Nokia continues to build strongly built tanks that can weather drops, scratches, bumps more so than your alternative fisherpricePhone or wannabe. This is not for the squeamish. It takes a hell of a lot of beating, so you need not worry about drops. But best to take care of your Nokia. Just because it’s strong doesn’t mean it should be neglected or be put under undue phone abuse.

#Switch Comics: Scratch Resistant Screen Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:49 AM PST Ali posted the first “#Switch Comics” strip, which talked about the Super Sensitive screen. Nokia UK has posted another to Twitter now, showing off the scratch resistant screen, by featuring Echidnas (is that what they are called overseas too?).

Video: Jolla UI Video ( + Demo on N950 ) Update: A better demo on N950 Posted: 21 Nov 2012 02:20 AM PST Jolla just revealed the UI for their Sailfish OS. To me, it is a Harmattan-Playbook OS hybrid. The UI brings with it a double tap to wake feature (based on the demo we saw on stage), swipe to exit apps, swipe up on homescreen for the launcher, swipe down for the status info (battery, carrier signal etc.) and much more! The multitasking view is on the homescreen in a similar manner to Playbook OS, with the same sort of “cards” as BB10 and Harmattan. What is better though, is the fact these act like widgets. For the music player, you can swipe the square on your homescreen, and it will change tracks. Clearly this is the best multitasking experience seen on a smartphone. The “ambience” feature is cool. Simply choose an image and “create ambience”, for the color scheme of the device to adjust to the selected image. There are two videos below, the first being the official presentation as posted by Jolla, with the second being from a Finnish site, which shows the demo on an N950. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRZxM9rNyZ4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRZxM9rNyZ4 Something to point out; from the event we saw a list of partners such as carriers like DNA, but also software companies like Opera. Myriad appeared on the screen too. Sound familiar? They were the company behind making one of the android compatibility layers for MeeGo. In case you think it is a different Myriad, the second video linked shows an Android icon, plus the Sailfish OS wiki QA page, mentions Android apps.
I am definitely excited and pleased for the ex-Nokians who have achieved something remarkable in a relatively short time. Update: Here is another demo on the N950, and is better in my opinion, this time being shown by Jolla’s Senior Designer, Jaakko Roppola.

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 01:16 AM PST A few pieces of Jolla News before I start my Wednesday at the Hospital. Today is Jollas Launch, revealling what their new UI/UX is like. Launch can be watched live here. Finnish Ooperator DNA will supposedly be selling phones that run MeeGo SailFish. (Note, yes, yadda yadda, Nokia blog, why Jolla. Jolla is MeeGo and even Jolla’s page on twitter says that they’re continuing Nokia’s work on MeeGo. Nokia people, Nokia OS, Finnish based, and loved still by many Nokia fans). Finally, VDVsx asked us to vote for Jolla as best Finnish Start up Cheers incognito, ABC and VDVsx for the tip. I’ll catch you guys up later this afternoon to see what the excitement was all about! |
How To: Choosing Google as Internet Explorer Search on WP8/Nokia Lumia 920/820 Posted: 21 Nov 2012 01:09 AM PST
As nice as it is to use BING, (and Bing search integrated is actually quite decent if given the chance, to my surprise) I’m just in preference of the big G. On my WP7/WP7.5 device, I either used a google tile or surfcube in order to have google as my main search provider because you could not yet set what you wanted your search bar engine to be. In WP8, there are several small changes which means, well you now can. It’s just in Settings>Advanced Settings>Default Search provider Next time I’m typing in the URL search bar: I’ve taken screenshots as I’m just waiting at uni and have no other phone to snap pictures of it. Not sure if it’s the 920 having a stronger antenna or the fact I’m on Orange now (EE on signal bar same as T-Mobile) but I actually have fast internet here at my second base hospital to send myself these screenshots. |
Video: Introducing Nokia Lumia 810 on T-Mobile USA Posted: 21 Nov 2012 12:51 AM PST This is a promo from Nokia US on what the Nokia Lumia 810 can do. It’s quite a bit clearer than their usual promos on precisely what it is the 810 can do. I like that it’s all about the phone. They should splice in some people shots using the phone every now and again (and not the other way around where all you see is random people and 1/100th of a second on the phone). Still somewhat busy better than the usual offering.

Nokia Release File Sending via NFC App for WP8 Lumias – YouSendIt Posted: 21 Nov 2012 12:21 AM PST Nokia has released another Lumia exclusive app, called YouSendIt. This Lumia exclusive is only compatible with WP8 devices, as it requires NFC to transfer the files. Here is what the app description says on the WP Marketplace:
