Video: New Improved WP8 emoticons, new apps, OTA update Posted: 02 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PDT
First up, here’s a look at the re-organized emoticons available when typing on WP8 (text/email/tweeting/browser/whatever). Notice that instead of a big list, they’re organised into these tabs (are tabs metro?) that make it easier to see more emoticons of different types and a much wider variety too. As mentioned, not a major feature but lots of small improvements that improve user experience.
Next up, an early look at some of the new apps.
Here’s MetroTube, currently available for WP7 but tweaked for WP8
Finally, OTA updates for WP8. This will allow you to do this over WiFi or cellular. I’m gonna stick with PC updates. As seen in the video, the update didn’t work. A known error was mentioned. I hope it actually works in future.

Name that Nokia: It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia Posted: 02 Nov 2012 02:00 AM PDT In yesterday’s episode of “ It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Zach Heller noticed a Nokia in it which he says is good free product placement. Whilst we’re here, below is another picture sent in this time by Chris W. Apparently it was in the hands of Eastenders character, Phill Mitchell (who seems to have upgraded finally from his long stent using a Nokia N72) |
Lumia 900 Product Placement in Rita Ora’s – Shine Ya Light Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:55 AM PDT Here’s a blatantly obvious product placement of the Lumia 900 in the music video of what seems to be a popular rising star in Britain? Rita Ora’s (Kosovo national and top of the British charts?) debut album has a couple Lumia 900s popping out, sometimes for no clear reason. At the very beginning of the video we see the Lumia 900 in black with a very awkward NOKIA logo on the front; then 2:48 seconds in it shows up again this time in stormtrooper white. All I can say is the music ain’t too shabby; check it out below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35yKcV9Vr2s Thanks for the tip Mensur Kosumi |
Lumia 810 Set for T-Mobile Release Nov. 14th for $150 Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:46 AM PDT I could’ve sworn we had already posted about this, but I guess not; the Lumia 810 (the T-Mobile one) has been officially priced alongside the HTC 8X. The phone comes with the standard 2 year contract for $149 (I’ve read that there’s a $50 mail in rebate, but I can’t find an official source mentioning it).

Microsoft Reportedly Testing Smartphone with Asian Suppliers Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:24 AM PDT This isn’t the first rumor we hear regarding a Microsoft phone, also being called the “surface” phone; and honestly it’s pretty much a sure thing, the real question is only when? Well according to the Wall Street JOurnal Microsoft are currently testing out the phone with some Asian suppliers, with a rumored screen size somewhere between 4-5″ . On the other hand The Verge’s sources confirm the phone’s production but insist that it’s a “Plan B” device in case all else fails from the WP8 OEMs:

Win a Nokia Lumia 920 and Wireless charger Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:00 AM PDT The Nokia Facebook page have a competition for you to win one of 5 Nokia Lumia 920s and wireless charging plate. There’s nothing to it really, just fill in your name and say where you’d like to use the charging plate (multiple choice). You can then share this competition with your friends which will apparently increase your chances of winning. If only it would work via referral link, lol :p.

Microsoft ran out of time to get notification centre in WP8? Posted: 02 Nov 2012 12:07 AM PDT
Whilst there are plenty of areas for you to see notifications on WP8 (lock screen, home screen, toast notifications, me tile etc) there’s still quite a demand for the unified notification area. We could go the way of Android/iOS/Symbian and have that pull down screen. Or in a somewhat N9/Metro way, have it as a third homescreen on the main menu. Or perhaps activated by an extended volume menu (the one that currently controls music buttons/profile) Whatever way it was supposed to happen it was definitely something intended for WP8 it’s just that MS, with all of it’s might, ran out of time. Rather than delay WP8 release, we get what we have now. Well as long as it’s still super fluid and bug free. Whilst we’re at it, how about landscape view and orientation lock controls, eh? I’d certainly find the notifications screen more useful for me as a shortcut to things like screen brightness and other quick controls (bt/wifi). Source: TheVerge Cheers all for the tip! |
