Nokia Announces Maps Rebranding to “Here”; Available Cross Platform/OS + 3D Mapping via EarthMine

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 10:02 AM PST

Ahhh Nostalgia…

In a somewhat puzzling move Nokia have officially announced that “Nokia Maps” will from now on be known as “Here”, no not “Nokia Here” just plain “Here”. Apparently this rebranding is to somehow help Nokia Maps  “Here” take on Google Maps which has for a long time dominated the US Market. Although I fail to see the need to remove the name Nokia from the mapping service I’m sure someone out there thought it was a good idea for some reason or the other. Along with the re-branding Stephen Elop also announced a new service of 3D Street Maps (like Google Street View) powered by the recent acquisition of earthmine, as well as some data gathering vehicles.

To help “Here” compete with Google maps Nokia plan to bring it to multiple platforms across the range in the form of true apps rather than in browser web apps, let’s see how this works out..

“We want to give everyone with any type of device the ability to use this, the best location platform in the industry,” Elop remarked, arguing that “openness is what sets Here apart” from any mapping service in the world.

Also worth noting is that the Nokia maps site can now be accessed by Here.net, which brings along with it some extended services such as the ability to book hotels in advance through the site. Also follow here on twitter here.

My first impression of “here” is that it’s pretty darn fast; which would of course be due to the fact that it’s all located in the cloud; so no need to communicate with Nokias servers for the data, and it seems Gizmodo agrees with me

Nokia Taking HTC to Court With 32 Alleged Infringements

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:11 AM PST

It’s no secret that Nokia have a very large wealth of patents under their belt, in fact some say that Nokias patent portfolios worth more than the actual Smartphone business. Regardless Nokia have never been overly aggressive with their patents, usually preferring to settle with who-ever chooses to infringe on them, rather than risk long and expensive court trials. The issue of course arises when the infringer (is that a proper word?) denies that they are violating your patents, forcing the cases to court.

Nokia already have a settlement in place with Apple that has generated a decent sum of money to say the least (I think the number was $7 per iPhone?); and now it seems it’s HTCs turn to start paying up as Nokia currently have 32 active Patent Disputes with them. Four of which are set to go to court before the end of the year (the first of which is set for Nov. 21st).

Here’s a brief overview of the upcoming 4 cases:

  • On November 21, the Munich I Regional Court will hold a first hearing on Nokia’s infringement claims against HTC (and ViewSonic and RIM) over EP1322072 on “a mobile communication system and a method for connecting a remote workstation to a data communication network via a mobile communication network”.
  • The Munich I Regional Court will hold a first hearing (I don’t knwo yet which patent it relates to) on December 12.
  • Two days later, the Mannheim Regional Court will hold two trials, one over EP1329982 on an “antenna for wireless communications devices” and the other over EP0812120 on a “method for using services offered by a telecommunication network, a telecommunication system and a terminal for it”.

Check out the detailed list of all patent infringements here: http://www.fosspatents.com/2012/11/htcs-biggest-patent-worry-after-apple.html

Worth noting is that earlier this week HTC ended a long standing patent dispute with apple by a 10 year settlement agreement.

Sprint Set to Launch LTE WP8 Devices in 2013

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:55 AM PST

As of now 3 of the 4 major carriers in the US have gotten a piece of the WP8 action, with Verizon being the latest to join the party by carrying the Lumia 822 (and an HTC device). The only carrier left out so far has been Sprint who haven’t been involved in the WP game since Nokia joined (they launched one of the original HTC devices that no one seems to remember).

But with WP8 gaining some traction and most importantly some attention, Sprint seems to be ready to get back in the game emailing the following statement:

“Sprint and Microsoft are partnering to bring Windows Phone 8 to Sprint’s customers – operating on its 4G LTE network – next year,

Hopefully Nokia are already in talks with Sprint to get them on board the Lumia train (was honestly surprised they didn’t pick up the yellow 920 as an exclusive).

If I may speculate MWC is set for Q1 2013 so we’ll almost definitely see some new devices there, one of which will hopefully be destined to Sprint.

Lumia 920 Development Device Spotted Running WP8 V. 10141(Current = V. 9903)

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:43 AM PST

WP8 hasn’t even been released yet in many regions of the world, yet there seems to be a newer version of the OS already in the works and running around in the wild. The images come from a Lumia 920 Development device in China that was spotted running WP8 version 10141 vs the initial launch version (9903); it’s safe to assume that this is a proper update rather than some bug fixes seeing how Microsoft’s track record with changing version releases tends to involve adding a few digits in the thousanths.

Perhaps we’re much close to the long fabled/awaited notification center that they just “ran out of time” for?

Amazon China Cancels Lumia 920T Pre-Orders; Incorrect Pricing to Blame

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:32 AM PST

After we reported yesterday that the Lumia 920T sold out on Amazon within 30 minutes of going live; Amazon went ahead and cancelled all the preorders. Apparently the reason behind this is that the list pricing was incorrect (which makes sense since $570 is pretty cheap for a pre-order device); Amazon sent anyone who’s order got cancelled a gift card for 30 Yaun = a Measly $4. Hopefully the interest in the Lumia was due to more than the low low price.. fingers crossed for a repeat performance.

Video: Ferrari Red Nokia Lumia 920, AT&T and Global variants.

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 04:03 AM PST

We’ve got a couple of unboxings for you of the luscious Ferrari Red Nokia Lumia 920, first up by reader Jason or JGrove3. This is from AT&T.

Hello everyone. Here is my Nokia Lumia 920 for AT&T Unboxing and First Impressions video I’ve put together for mynokiablog.com

So back story: I’m a Nokia N8-00 user venturing into what to most people is new territory, Windows Phone 8 and the future of Nokia. Only a day in, and I’m loving this phone. I’m been through Android 2.1-4.1, and iOS is iOS. Those really weren’t for me (as fun as it is to force these said devices to do what the manufactures didn’t want you to bother with). Symbian S^3 to Nokia Belle, I was happy, but 3.5″ screens, nHD resolution and no future in sight, I was ready for a different platform, but not neccessarly a different Manufacture.

Comments welcome and appeciated. Criticism, too.

Up next, Evgeny shared his unboxing of his red 920 too.

Ferrari Red @Nokia Lumia 920 available from @Phones4U. Come on Electric Pikachu Yellow!!

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 12:54 AM PST

As you know, in the UK, the only place to get the Red and Yellow Nokia Lumia 920 on contract is with Phones4U. Black and White are available with both Phones4U and Orange/T-Mobile aka, “EE”. When you sign up, you might get either a T-Mobile, Orange or true EE contract (the first two seem to just pose as EE on your signal bar).

I’m not sure when precisely it became available but the Ferrari Red Nokia Lumia 920 appears to be available now in the UK through Phones4U. No sign yet of my precious Electric Pikachu Yellow one. It should be sometime in the next 7 days that I’ll finally be able to renew my contract.

The yellow is the handset used at the Phones4U shop as a display unit and on their adverts:

Nokia 808 PureView vs Nokia Lumia 920 low light

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 12:45 AM PST

Experienced PureView user, Marc from the PureView club compares low light samples between the Nokia 808 PureView camera king and the PureView V2, OIS low light champ, the Nokia Lumia 920.

Here’s another situation where low light, sans flash is quite useful (as no amount of flash will light up this whole area)

Cheers tommy for the heads up!

BTW, here’s another interesting PureView vs PureView article:
