Belle FP2 gets Calendar and SMS Update

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 05:23 PM PST

BelleFP2-SMS+Calendar Fix

Nokia have pushed out two small updates for Belle FP2 devices (808PV, 701 etc.). These updates are fixes for Calendar and SMS. Sadly I don’t have an 808 Pureview of any devices updateable to Belle FP2, so I  am not sure what it adds/fixes exactly. It is good to see that Nokia are still providing updates and fixes for these “dead” devices.

Have you gotten the updates? Let us know how it is and whatr fixes you’ve noticed.

Nokia Denmark show of Magenta Lumia 920

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 02:01 PM PST

Nokia Denmark have posted a video to their official YouTube channel, showing off what they are calling the “Open Song Project”. The concept seems pretty cool, at least to me. What is even cooler though, is that the Product Manager can be seen in the above screenshot touting what looks like a Lumia 920 is glossy Magenta.

Will you be getting a Magenta 920?

Loud Sound Recording on Nokia Lumia 920

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 10:53 AM PST

For those interested, here’s what loud audio recording sounds like from a Nokia Lumia 920 video clip.

The Nokia 808 PureView with it’s Rich Recording in stereo is the golden standard, putting to shame not just all other mobile phones but many other higher end/more expensive set ups. The Nokia Lumia 920 is not branded as Rich Recording but it’s no slouch. Pretty much RR but in mono.

Leaked Verizon Documents Showing Off Wireless Charging for HTC 8X -More Copying?

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 10:08 AM PST

It’s common knowledge that the new line of HTC phones are almost blatant rip-offs of the Lumia Fabula design, using similar vibrant colors, with unibody designs (although admittedly I like the idea of a rubberized back). It’s possible though that this imitation has gone a step further; as both the Verge and a leaked document shows wireless charging built into the HTC 8x, which is slightly confusing.

If the 8x has had wireless charging all along why haven’t HTC announced this feature before? Especially when Nokia were making alot of noise about it? My personal theory is that the wireless charging is an idea “pinched” by Nokia and will be exclusive to their Verizon variant; especially since the 920 was announced almost 2 weeks before the 8X, more than enough time for some last minute changes. Either way similar specs will have the benefit of  driving the price down, so it’s not all bad news right?

Director, Windows Phone Business Group, Vineet Durani Interviewed

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST

TechTree interviewed Vineet Durani, Director from Microsoft’s Windows Phone Business Group.

When asked about the possibility of sending over bluetooth without file type restriction, Vineet said:

Windows Phone 8 has Bluetooth to transfer all kinds of files and contacts from any phone to another Bluetooth-enabled phone without any restrictions.

I hope Vineet is clued up and can be certain about this as BT file sending is highly important to some consumers, as we have heard many times from our readers in India. Hopefully “all kinds of files” literally means that and not simply a phrase for “lots of types”. He confirms anyway by saying “without any restrictions”. This, along with MicroSD support (when hardware enabled) and USB mass storage mode are all welcome small additions.

  • WP7.5 phones will continue to be sold along side WP8
  • Skype coming soon

SlashGear’s Nokia Lumia 920 Review, “clearly the most unique Windows Phone 8 experience”

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 04:28 AM PST

We saw a brief preview in SlashGear’s Nokia Lumia 920 first impressions post. Not long after that, we’ve got their full review.

http://www.slashgear.com/att-nokia-lumia-920-review-03255516/

Standing out amongst the crowd can often be a good thing, or you could stick out like a sore thumb as the one to avoid. Fortunately, I think there’s plenty of positive things in the Nokia Lumia 920 that, well, far outweighs 20 pennies.

I remember Nokia fans once screaming out for Nokia to include exciting features in their phones regardless of size/weight (to an extent) but the world has changed and no longer dominated by Nokia fans.

Nokia Lumia 920 represents not only the most unique WP8 experience but the best WP8 experience. But is the WP8 experience going to be compelling enough?

Weekend Watch: Paradise Island, Koh Wai Thailand, by Nokia 808 PureView

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 01:17 AM PST

Here’s a nice change of scenery for some of us – a beautiful paradise island, Koh Wai, Thailand. It’s shot on the Nokia 808 PureView.

There are some nice tripod mounted shots there. Once steady (either on tripod/dolly/steadicam) the 808 PureView’s videos look absolutely incredible (and sound incredible too but often these videos have music to cover that up)

Juha has a photography blog over at http://juhalappalainen.wordpress.com/.

My first and only time in Thailand was luckily thanks to Nokia, testing out the Nokia N82′s camera prowess (as well as the sports tracker app that geotagged photos – something we take for granted now). It’s a beautiful location and a wonderful place and the 808 is a wonderful camera to capture all those stunning memories.

Weekend Read: Chris Weber – More PureView for Nokia Lumia?

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 01:06 AM PST

This shouldn’t come as a surprise as it would be very much expected for Nokia to expand PureView into their higher end smartphone line that is Nokia Lumia.

We’ve seen so far the Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView V2 with its “untouchable” low light performance and visibly better video stabilisation.

But many are still crying out for PureView V1 like performance. Perhaps not necessarily having 41MP (although that would be a killer on the marketing front…if Nokia knew how to market anything).

When asked about that 41mp camera technology (PureView v1 oversampling, large sensor), PC Mag quotes Chris Weber in saying:

Our ambitions are to bring more and more of that technology to the Windows Phone platform.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2411548,00.asp

I’d rather he says Lumia. Anyway, the 920/820 is said to be the first Nokia Windows Phones that Nokia have been able to add that Nokia Stamp or Secret Sauce/

“These are the first phones where we’ve been able to add the Nokia secret sauce.”

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2411548,00.asp

Nokia’s Five distinct areas for differentiation include:

Imaging, wireless charging, screen, location and music

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2411548,00.asp

I’m sure somebody missed out design. Or possibly not since HTCrap will insist that their wannabe lumia is purely their own design without hints from the original Lumia/N9.

Going back to imaging, MWC might be an opportune time to see PureView 1 or PureView V3 (combination of both larger sensor, a bit of oversampling perhaps and optical image stabilisation). It was said many times in the launch of the 808 that bringing this version of PureView to Lumia/WP would meant waiting an extra year. It’s almost a year on.

Size would obviously be a worry. What’s funny is that the same people complaining about the weight of the Nokia Lumia 920 over and over like it’s the most important factor and that all the innovations should be ignored over the plain boring copy that’s arbitrarily lighter – it’s only 2g heavier than the Note 2 to which there are ZERO complaints on the weight. I suppose 2g just takes people over the edge eh? I guess 2g is 2,000,000,000 nano grams and these tech reviewers have hands that sensitive.

Thickness is surely another issue. Slimmer might mean people can find it easier to get over the weight. Or at least tapering at the edges significantly enough to appear slimmer.

Cheers nn for the tip!
