WP 7.8 supposedly RTM?

Posted: 18 Nov 2012 07:13 PM PST

I thought we had posted this already, but it seems it was just the leaked slides.

Supposedly, at a MS & Nokia Developer event in Singapore, it was revealed that Windows Phone 7.8 had been Released to Manufacturers (RTM). WMPU tipster informed them that the WP 7.8 update should be “released to devices in a matter of days to weeks, but certainly not all the way into 2013″.

Tipster also confirmed that IE10 will NOT be in the update, due to its dependency on hardware acceleration.

Yellow Fatboy Charging Pillow free to first 100 Allphones Customers who buy Lumia 920 online [Australia]

Posted: 18 Nov 2012 06:07 PM PST

I saw this on twitter earlier today, but had been at uni doing some exam preparation until now. Allphones, which I guess is the AU equivalent for Phones4U, have created a Lumia 920 landing page on their site, with the usual stuff; info, spec sheet, deals etc. What is unique, is that there is a small ad on the side of the page (not shown in the screenshot as it is small and not shown correctly on my mac), linking to a “Pre-Register” page.

Note: Pre-register and pre-order are different, as registering will simply mean Allphones will contact you when they have pricing and availability info. (Should be Wednesday as Tuesday night is the Launch event here in Sydney).

If you’re lucky enough to be one of the first 100 people to order online, you will receive a Yellow Fatboy Charging Mat. Yes, YELLOW!! How awesome is that?! Most people (mainly US) have had to settle for black or white, but here (if you’re lucky of course) can get a free yellow one.

Deal Alert: Lumia 900 Factory Unlocked for $299; Lumia 800 Unlocked for $280

Posted: 18 Nov 2012 09:21 AM PST

True the latest range of WP8 devices have hit the shops, with amazing features such as OIS, super sensitive touch, HD screens, expandable memory and more; but there is still a decent bit of demand for the previous generation of Lumias. Seeing as how they have only launched in some parts of the world (Lebanon, India, Gulf) less than 3 months ago ; they are still fairly new devices in some regions. However on Amazon the release of the latest Lumias has pushed down their price to a crazy $270 for the Lumia 900, and $280 for the 800, the no brainer here of course is the Lumia 900; for anyone who wants a beyond decent (yet admittedly outdated Windows Phone) than look no further.

And of course these phones are being sold factory unlocked, open for most networks (not tied down to At&t or any other networks)

Lumia 900 Unlocked, Starting at $299

Nokia Lumia 800 black 16GB -FACTORY UNLOCKED- $284

These would make a great gift for a less tech savvy relative who would still love something that’s “everyday amazing”; especially with the promised WP7.8 updates.

Homebrew: Windows Phone Notification centre

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 10:04 PM PST

Over at WPH, Jaxbot has embarked on a new project, creating a central hub for notifications on WP. It is still in infancy, but it is quite promising. Due to it’s young state, it isn’t public just yet, but this proves that a Notification Hub is not impossible for WP.

It simply centralises all the toast notifications into a single list, so all apps that provide toast notifications, will have their notifications appear in this hub. No extra effort required. Take a look at the video the dev has posted on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjT0-tmvf2E

Here is what Jaxbot had to say on his blog post:

“As many of you know, whenever I have an experimental project at hand, I like to show it off in the preliminary stages, to get feedback and ideas for how it should turn out. Well, I’m doing that again today, and I’ll have you know that this is no conceptual project. It’s completely, 100% genuinely working. Watch the video above, it’ll explain it.

What we have here is my response to the controversial subject of a notification center. Every time I’ve tried using toasts, I’ve found them rather pointless, as they disappear after 10 seconds and I’ll never know what app wanted to tell me what. With the recent talks of Microsoft working on one, I thought I’d put together my own for Windows Phone 7, and possibly even WP8 (haven’t tested it, but if the push works the same way, it should work fine).

The application is rather simple in design and does not require any root privileges. You’re welcome. But it’s also in very early stages, so I need some ideas about designs and usage. If you think you’d use this application, give me a hollar below, as I need to know whether or not I should work on making it stable enough for public use, or if people are content with the current system by Microsoft.

Questions, thoughts, concerns, drop them below. “
