iPhone 5 Causes Site Outages, Huge sales, Breaks Records Posted: 17 Sep 2012 11:30 AM PDT Although the general web opinion seems to be that the iPhone 5 was a bit of a disappointment, it still managed to break all preorder records and take a few sites down with it. Announced last week, on Wednesday, the new iPhone surpassed all expectations, with AT&T confirming that the demand is significant, to say the least. The same carriers call this debut, the “most successful iPhone launch ever” and they mention that the preorders set a sales record over the weekend, making this the fastest selling iPhone to date. All previous models were surpassed and preorders of the iPhone 5 went live at midnight last Friday, in case you’re wondering. Following that, it took just an hour for Apple to be out of the preorder stock. The customer demand in that first hour was so impressive, that it caused outages on Apple.com and some carrier websites. The iPhone 4S took 22 hours to sell out, while the iPhone 4 took 20 hours. So, the iPhone 5 managed to sell out 20 times faster than these devices and if that’s not a success, I don’t know what is. The demand for the new phone is also affecting the shipping expectations, that have now reached one to two weeks and in some cases it even increased to 3 weeks. Meanwhile, sources say that the first iPhone 5 orders have started shipping from China, although they’re still set to arrive on September 21st, as promised. People are already queuing outside the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York, to be among the first to get their hands on the first bigger screen iPhone. That’s 8 days early folks and it may require great patience, a tent, food and… patience again. So, is the iPhone 5 a success or what? Related posts: |
Posted: 17 Sep 2012 09:36 AM PDT Appointed in July as the new Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer (pictured) is already taking an interesting measure: giving Yahoo employees free smartphones. You shouldn’t let the smile of the 37 year old CEO fool you, since she’s really good at what she does. She had been part of Google since 1999 and was the first female engineer on the team and 13 years of being a Google official tells you something, right? Anyway, the new and sympathetic CEO sent out an internal mail, saying that Yahoo is moving away from BlackBerry devices as their corporate phones. That will happen in 22 countries and the switch will allow employees to choose the Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, HTC Evo 4G LTE and Nokia Lumia 920, so there’s an OS for everyone. A few weeks ago, Yahoo big cats decided that they want their employees to have devices similar to the ones the user rely on and a BlackBerry is no longer representative for that idea. It would be nice if we found out just how many of the employees prefer a Lumia 920 over an iPhone 5. Anyway, a free phone is a free phone and there are lot of freebies going around today, with Microsoft also offering their full time employees a Windows RT tablet, WP8 handset and Windows 8 PC. So, if you somehow have time to work at both Yahoo and Microsoft, you’ve got yourself two fresh smartphones. Related posts: |
iPhone 5 Benchmarks Leak Online; Geekbench Details Show Impressive Results! Posted: 17 Sep 2012 07:17 AM PDT A benchmark scored registered on Sunday with the Geekbench test shows mentions of the iPhone 5 outperforming each and every iOS and Android device on the website. The benchmarking service logged a score of 1601 from an iPhone 5,2, that ran iOS 6.0 on a dual core ARMv7 processor at 1.02GHz with 1 GB of RAM. The identifiers can be messed with, of course, but the specifications fit previous speculation regarding the Apple A6 SoC. They said that it comes accompanied by 1 GB of DRAM and uses an ARMv7 CPU with custom cores. If the results are legit, the iPhone 5,2 score beats all the Android devices, including the Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S III. No other iOS device out there even surpassed 800 points, so it’s even more impressive. The iPhone 4S scored 631, while the iPad 3 reached 734 points. Last Wednesday, when the iPhone 5 was announced, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said that the new A6 chip doubles the processing and graphics performance of the A5 SoC. He also promised an increase in battery life, that is now 8 hours of 3G and LTE talk time and web browsing. Many people believed at first that this was in fact an Apple A6 quad core CPU built by Samsung on the 32 nm fabrication process, but it was not, apparently. It only holds two processing cores, running at a higher clock speed than the A5. The exact configuration is not yet clear, but as usual I expect the guys doing the teardown in a week or so to clear the issue. Related posts: |
Samsung Galaxy S 4 Coming in February 2013, Showcased at MWC 2013, Packing a 5 Inch Display Posted: 17 Sep 2012 03:24 AM PDT With the iPhone 5 rumors now gone and the iPad Mini taking a break from speculations, it’s now time for Samsung to get back in the game. And no, we’re not talking about a new Nexus phone, but rather about the Samsung Galaxy S IV. Too soon? You bet, but it appears that the new handset is already being planned for early 2013, with a MWC 2013 showcasing and a debut in February 2013. The Korea Times is the one with the scoop, quoting sources inside the company. They say they’re ready to show the new phone in Barcelona and that it will have a 5 inch display. The source continues to say that the device will hit the stores a month after its debut. Samsung Galaxy S 4 is expected to keep its rectangle shape with rounded corners, but there will be some “external changes”, according to insiders. LTE is certainly a given, as well as a new generation of Exynos quad core CPU. Samsung Galaxy S III already hit 20 million sales in just 3 months, so the next device has all the reason to become a new hit, or even a bigger one. An OLED display will most likely be used, as well as 2 GB of RAM, probably a 12 or 16 megapixel camera and 16/32GB of storage. The new model may debut with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or perhaps with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, if it’s ready by then. Are you ready for more months of speculations regarding the Galaxy S IV? Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Premier GT-I9260 Have Their Specs Leaked Posted: 17 Sep 2012 12:32 AM PDT The rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S 2 Plus were dating from even before the Galaxy S III was even launched, so it’s no surprise that they pop up every once in a while. We’ve also heard recently about a potential Samsung Galaxy S III Mini being in the works and now we get to see the specs of two new Samsung devices, that are the S 2 Plus and what is rumored to be the new Nexus phone. Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus is codenamed GT-I9105 here and it comes with a 4.3 inch 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED Plus display and a MSM7227A-1 Turbo Single 1 GHz CPU. It also offers HSDPA connectivity, an 8 megapixel camera at the back and a front 2 megapixel shooter. The Galaxy S 2 Plus has 16/32GB of storage, a microSD card slot, Android 4.0 ICS, a microUSB port, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi and a 1650 mAh battery. It will debut with a blue grey case and it measures 8.5 mm in thickness. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Premier aka the GT-I9260 is supposed to be a Galaxy Nexus follow-up, with a 4.65 inch HD display, HSDPA, 8 megapixel camera camera, 8/16 GB of storage and microSD card slot, plus the same CPU mentioned above for the Galaxy S2 Plus. This model runs Android Jelly Bean, has Bluetooth 4.0, a mystery battery and measures 8.8 mm in thickness. This supposed new Nexus is a bit underwhelming if you ask me, while the Galaxy S2 Plus is also not that impressive. Is there any room on the market for these new phones, honestly? Related posts: |
