Video: Customers as Ambassadors with Nokia’s Becky Gloyne

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Here’s a video on supposedly ‘how to turn Nokia customers into brand Ambassadors’, specifically how social works at Nokia. Reminds me of the things WOMWorldNokia used to do.

The video is a bit long – about 25 minutes but there are some interesting insights. Apparently, Stephen Elop leaves a message for the employees at least once a day and replies to them all.

I’m not sure if the social media people are in anyway connected to the marketing people. Becky apparently asked people, who was Nokia’s biggest fan, and received a flood of emails from passionate Nokia fans from around the world.

Part of this is about recruiting talent. It was interesting to find out that this is a continuously ongoing process that occurs even at events such as MWC (though Nokia apparently tried to do this in a subtle way). Things like that apparently pulls more of a buzz than a job advert or marketing campaign (well not the way Nokia does marketing campaigns anyway. Hello marketing?)

Note – Elop joined not in January/February 11 as noted by the video where supposedly ‘Nokia staff know their facts’. :p

What’s happening on 25.9.12 (Nokia Collaboration Day) + Elop Q&A

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 11:21 AM PDT

A couple of related posts.

First up, tomorrow, September 25th is meant to be Nokia Collaboration day.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/14/nokia-world-2012-collaboration-day-september-25th-finland-invitation-only/

We’ve not really heard what’s happening, but I did notice last night (?) that Damian Dinning tweeted TnkGrl (Myriam Joire of Engadget) who was at Nokia House.

Over at Engadget, they’ll be conducting an ‘Ask Me Anything’ Reddit style Q&A. 9am GMT. I’ll be in hospital on ward rounds all day (just like today)

I’ve also received mail about a launch in Indonesia but only as a tip with no source. So I’m not quite sure what’s going on phone wise.

Cheers Muerte and M for the tip

Nokia to sue HTC over Lumia copies? Damn right!

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 10:21 AM PDT

Curved front glass, black front frame against a colourful polycarbonate border and back. You might say that’s the Nokia N9 or the Nokia Lumia range. Whilst most of the market stuck with their iPhone clones *sam*cough* Nokia tried something different, to which even Apple used a Lumia to signify a unique, non Apple design (when attacking the GalaxyiPhone).

Bright colour border, tapered corners (inspired Moto droid), design evolution prior to N9/Lumia.

This design was striking, award winning, and turning heads of fans and even Nokia naysayers. It’s no surprise that we’d see other manufacturers inspired to follow this route. Amazingly, it’s not Samsung. Probably too busy stalking Apple (joke!). It’s HTC. Despite HTC’s WP7.5 specs being technically higher than Lumia, Lumia’s design and build attracted consumers away from HTC’s Droid slapped with WP phones.

Prior to Nokia N9/Lumia, HTC devices have had their standard black/grey designs. But now the reaction of many blogs and tech fans is the strange resemblance of HTC’s new WP8 devices to Nokias. Polycarbonate? Check. Curved screen? Check. Bright colours? Check. We should have seen it since the One X was thought to have been N9 inspired. But to be fair on HTC, One X was different enough.

The choice word popular in youtube comments was ‘ripp off’. Whilst it’s ok to take design cues, what irks me is how HTC’s designers dare say they’ve come up with a completely new unique design.

PS. Those saying they look alike because it’s Windows Phone – erm, HTC made WP before and after Nokia and until 8X/8S did not resemble Lumia. Should such a design be so obvious and natural, why weren’t HTC making Lumia looking phones before?

Daring new designs of Lumia has NOTHING to do with Microsoft (or Windows Phone). That is Nokia through and through, trying to cut it through against the boring, safe competition. In a way, it’s nice to see Nokia setting trends, with HTC’s “copy” reinforcing the design of the original (which also forces Nokia to continue innovating). But it’s also annoying that HTC just took a shortcut from the designs and risks Nokia took.

Even when the HTC was leaked as the Accord, the reactions was that it was a Lumia clone.

Quite rightly, Nokia then is suing HTC.

The reports are saying Nokia is preparing to get HTC 8X banned in various parts of the world from going on sale when it will launch in November. Nokia has said in reports that the front-face of HTC 8X looks identically same as of the Lumia 820 followed by side-curves of the phone body.

Below is a supposed tablet from HTC. Yet another ‘unique’ design.

N8 appears in Aussie Drama; Boasts iOS Call UI

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 03:57 AM PDT

I know this is a pointless post, but I am fairly worked up over this.

Over the last week, I had seen ads for an Aussie Drama, House Husbands. My Nokia eye caught glimpses of the side of an N8. I made it my mission to watch the latest episode, as I had been told by some friends, that the Lumia 710 had been seen the week before. It didn’t take long actually. Within the first minute, two N8′s made an appearance.

It isn’t strange to see a phone with a modified UI (usually done to avoid infringements), but seeing Symbian’s UI swapped for iOS made me enter rage mode. Sure, iOS is probably the most recognized UI in the world, but still, the device was most likely given to the show, on good faith, and this is how it is presented.

Not only is iOS UI screenshot used (can tell its a screenshot as no breathing light and the size of UI is totally wrong), they cover it up with a stupid cover. I admit, I saw the phone covered up, and did think it was an iPhone.

82% of Windows Phone fans prefer the Nokia Lumia 920 over HTC 8X and Samsung ATIV S

Posted: 23 Sep 2012 10:58 PM PDT

According to a poll last week by Windows Phone fans on WPCenral, a whopping 82% of nearly 10,000 voters preferred the Nokia Lumia 920.

PureView, PureMotion HD+, Lumia design, Super Sensitive Screen, Clear Black technology, Wireless charging and Nokia exclusive apps.

Doing well against other Windows Phones is ok, but Nokia Lumia 920 needs to perform well against the other Non-WP competitors too, especially since WP is a much smaller market.

There are only online polls, but remember, Wired’s poll put the Nokia Lumia 920, 22,ooo votes (62%) above the nearest competitor, iPhone 5. This unfortunately is not how things will translate into sales. It would be awesome if that was the case, but how good a phone is does not equate to sales. Not always anyway. Also, phones that aren’t on sale, can’t generate sales! Strange concept, eh, Nokia/Microsoft?

It’s almost 1 year since the first Lumia was launched. There’s some small momentum going along with Nokia Lumia. Now with better hardware to exceed the competition in several places, a stronger ecosystem with more versatile software than before, Nokia Lumia could start becoming an even stronger, viable alternative to iPhone and Galaxy. We won’t probably ever get to cult status like the fans in the video below but as long as there’s a decent proportion of new, loyal, Nokia Lumia buyers, that’s what counts.

It’ll now rest a lot on Nokia’s efforts with carriers and the marketing to allow consumers to even be aware such innovative phones exist in the first place.

Cheers GS65 for the tip
