Video: Carl Zeiss Lenses – Nokia, (PureView) and Carl Zeiss (808 vs 920 module comparison) Posted: 23 Sep 2012 05:00 PM PDT This video is about the cooperation of Nokia and Carl Zeiss. Ari Partinen from Nokia explains PureView in Nokia. He says any time there is something ground breaking in digital imaging, it’s called PureView – it stands for the highest possible imaging experience. A little bit like the Nseries brand stood for multimedia. Next, Oliver Shindelbeck from Carl Zeiss talks about their relationship with Nokia. Here’s a look at the camera modules with carl zeiss lens. |
Posted: 23 Sep 2012 04:00 PM PDT Dubstep may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the Nokia 3310 can always attract an audience of Nokia fans. It certainly caught my eye and my ears think this was actually quite alright. The tone is created on the 3310′s in built ringtone maker mixed with some dubstep beat. Not bad .

Nokia Reading: Closer Look at News Stream and Sideloading E-Books Posted: 23 Sep 2012 10:17 AM PDT I know we covered the update to the latest version of Nokia Reading yesterday; but for a book-worm like me it’s definitely worth a second closer look. I was only able to get the latest version of Nokia Reading earlier today, as the update wasn’t showing up for me last night; but after a re-install, reboot and a 12 Hour wait I was able to download it (UK marketplace). The initial interface of the app hasn’t changed much still offering the great Metro experience of separating the Book store from your shelf, while keeping them within reach (Personally I think Metro-or whatever it’s called now- is great for organizing large apps, as each “pane” can act as a app on it’s own). The main update to Nokia Reading (now V1.4 previously 1.2) is the inclusion of the beautiful RSS reader dubbed “News Stream”, the reader itself carries on the live tile look (mimicking your Phone theme color) with multiple sized tiles and updating stories (WP8 influenced?). News Stream comes preloaded with several news “bundles” for you to choose from including Regional news (depending on Marketplace), World News, Sports, Technology, Business, People… and many more; as well as the option to create your own News Stream. When making a new stream simply search for whatever topic intrigues you and the app will automatically load a list of suggested links (you can choose 4 news sources per stream). You can also pin any stream you want to your home screen where it will update automatically (over WiFi by default, 3G optional) so that you can keep in touch with the world at all times (News stream tile is the one covered by our awesome watermark). The other major feature in this update is the ability to sideload any book stored on your Skydrive account and download it onto Nokia reading (Provided it’s DRM free and either .epub or .PDF format); I was a bit lost at first as there was no obvious option to link your skydrive account under settings, but to do so simply head to My Books–>More–> and hit the “skydrive download” button. After that it’s smooth sailing where I was able to retrieve multiple books in both PDF and epub format, but either my files don’t have the cover metadata or the app doesn’t support that yet; but not a major issue either way. Two features I’d like to see in upcoming versions is a deeper integration of accounts between Nokia services (Nokia music, Reading and Maps all use the same login; maybe we;ll see an option to use the credit from Nokia music in the book store?); the other feature would be the ability to add custom links to the News Stream, I wasn’t able to find MyNokiablog under the “nokia” category so a manual input would greatly help (or if they could add a MNB feed we’d be very grateful). Go ahead and scan the QR code below to get the app, and happy reading (feel free to suggest a good book down below!): |
Viber HD Voice Calling Released Exclusively for Lumia Phones Posted: 23 Sep 2012 09:55 AM PDT Viber is a popular alternative to Skype and Tango for Voice calls, and runs on the same basis of giving you free calls and texts to anyone using the app (provided they register their phone number). We first heard that the app was coming to Lumia phones a while back and ti seems that earlier today the app hit the marketplace. As you can see from the screenshots above the app gives you the ability to chat and call from within the same application (there is a Viber messenger client available for WP but it doesn’t support VOIP), you can also use hte chat messaging to share images and location. One of my favorite features is the ability to switch to GSM (normal cellular call) from within the same dailler, for example the person you’re trying to call isn’t answering his Viber so you can try the normal number from the same place. Viber automatically filters your contact list to find those of your contacts whose number’s are registered to a viber account and adds them to the “Viber Contacts List”. The app also supports group chats which would come in handy if you want to share an image with a large number of people, or plan a gathering. All in all Viber is a great app and definitely worth a look it if you have a Lumia device. Get it by scanning the QR Code below: thanks to @arungprasad for the tip |

Nokia Lumia 920 trumps new iPhone 5 in low light photos too Posted: 23 Sep 2012 02:49 AM PDT With that dot in the middle of the lanky looking white phone, we see that the Nokia Lumia 920 trumps even the new Apple iPhone 5. On Friday, we heard how Apple have learnt from Nokia that oversampling can produce better low light images. Now theirs is no where near that of the Nokia 808 PureView but tests have shown that low light is improved over previous generation of iPhone. The oversampling isn’t exactly the same as explained by a few people in the original thread. How do we know it’s activated? Apparently it automatically triggers in low light (something I thought 808 would do). Anyway: now, in the most extreme low light tests, iPhone loses again to a Nokia, but this time a Nokia Lumia (PureView 2). The image was RT’d by Damian Dinning, original tweet by Kristina Björknäs, a physicist at Nokia. Here’s another quick image from photokina posted at NokConv.

Nokia Lumia 920, possibly 515USD/317GBP397EUR only? Posted: 23 Sep 2012 02:33 AM PDT
Roid from welovewp.hk let us know that there’s a possibility of the Nokia Lumia 920 being priced at 3999HKD.
With direct conversion today, that makes it an equivalent of only:
However, this is not yet official sales prices, only the price set by some online retailers in China which could still be wrong. Source: welovewp.hk
