Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 Devices to Feature Qualcomm’s Famous S4 CPU?

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 03:09 PM PDT

Qualcomm has enough problems with the Krait S4 chipset as is, so imagine if they were to get yet another partner to place some more orders… Now Nokia is rumored to join their list of partners, ordering the Snapdragon S4 chip for its upcoming Lumia Windows Phone 8 units.

Rumors also say that the chip will come to Nokia’s Windows 8 tablets, if possible. The S4 Krait has been one of the most wanted processors of 2012, being available on popular devices such as the HTC One S and ASUS PadFone and the list is much longer than that. It even passes quad core chips like Tegra 3 in some benchmarks, so that’s why everyone wants it. Also, it doesn’t use up too much power and it has a pretty new generation of architecture. Right now Nokia Symbian and Windows Phone device can handle running with single core processors, but imagine them with dual core and new OS releases… they will look great and be very fluid.

MeeGo, for example felt a bit choppy on the N9, so a dual core processor would make all the difference. I’m curios to see what Windows Phone 8 will require in terms of hardware and how much RAM those dual core smartphones from Nokia will use. Nokia’s passage to dual core is just like Sony’s to quad core: it’s coming, but it doesn’t have a clear timeline.

We’ve got Porsche working with RIM on the luxurious P9981 handset and now Lamborghini wants a piece of the mobile world. They’ve just announced 3 new handsets and a tablet, all of them based on Android, apparently. These are all luxury models, introduced in Russia. You can check out the first of the bunch below: Lamborghini TL688.

This handset is also known as the Spyder and it comes with a 2 inch QVGA display, a 3 megapixel camera at the back and 4GB of storage. It also has GPRS/EDGE connectivity and it’s covered with hand-made leather. There’s also a 1200 mAh battery on board and a 5 megapixel camera at the back.

There’s a VGA shooter at the front and like the first Spyder this one is covered with gold and leather. Lamborghini Spyder 2 has a price of $2,438. And finally we have a smartphone here, pictured below, the Lamborghini TL700. This unit costs $2,750 and gives you a 3.7 inch WVGA Sapphire Crystal screen, unknown Qualcomm CPU under the hood, 4GB of storage and at the back a 5 megapixel camera with a front VGA shooter. Other specs include a 1400 mAh battery and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, plus gold plating and crocodile skin as ornaments.

Microsoft Working on Detachable Dual Display, According to Patent

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 12:43 PM PDT

Microsoft is supposedly working on a very interesting new form factor for a mobile device, that involves a detachable dual display. That’s shown by a recent patent uncovered in documentation published by Microsoft. Patent Bolt is the one reporting on this, having uncovered details about a dual display smartphone that can separate into two functional units.

If I’m not mistaking, a couple of years ago during a trade show we saw an Asian company showcasing a phone with dual detachable modules that came together via magnets and Bluetooth. That was a Japanese phone, so it can be done. It was also a pretty thin device with a clamshell form factor. The idea here is to have one screen for browsing on the web and the other to dial a number and actually talk to someone using that part of the phone, while checking your email.

In the case of the Microsoft gizmo, the two sides come together via magnetic strips that are aligned edge to edge to the side of the screen, or at least so says the patent. The documents were filed in February of this year, but MS has been owner of the technology since 2009.

ZTE Tania Windows Phone Unit Debuts in China

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 11:24 AM PDT

Last time I heard about Windows Phone in China it was on the occasion of the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 800 in the country. It generated queues and quite a bit of hype over there and now there’s a fresh Windows Phone device to get excited about in China. I’m talking about ZTE Tania, pictured below.

This is a lower end model, that should be about $150 or even $200 cheaper than the Lumia 800, off contract of course. I knew ZTE Tania as a 1 GHz device, but now it’s revealed with an update of CPU, bringing it to 1.4 GHz. It also comes with a 4.3 inch 480 x 800 pixel screen, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage, without the possibility of adding extra memory. From what I know that ZTE Tania already debuted in some parts of Europe, so it’s strange to see it taking off in its homeland later than anyplace else.

At the back we have a 5 megapixel camera and the handset comes in black and white if you’re interested. The handset runs Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and will probably be one of the models that won’t get Windows Phone 8 Apollo.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD Gets Pictured, Branded Verizon

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 02:19 AM PDT

Some people say that these are the first pictures of the Motorola Droid RAZR HD, but are they? I’m sure that about a month ago or so we saw a blurrycam leak of this device, so let’s be more cautious with saying “first”, OK? The Droid RAZR HD you can see right here is headed to Verizon and will offer 4G LTE connectivity.

It keeps a bit of the RAZR look from last year and also sports a back plate with kevlar in the midst, plus no extra plastic rim around it. The camera is most likely a 13 megapixel sensor and it has been centered in the middle with flash and speaker on its sides. Rumor has it that this model sports a 3.300 mAh battery, must like the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX, so it takes the best out of the two latest RAZRs. The source of the leak claims that the handset has on screen navigation keys and  most likely Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 CPU inside.

Motorola also implemented a micro HDMI port on this device and paced it at the bottom, right next to the USB port. This is a design trait that was common in the past on models like the Bionic and Droid X/X2. No release date was mentioned, although the source did say that we’re in for a 2 month wait.

Huawei Activa 4G, First LTE Handset in USA for Huawei, at Least on MetroPCS

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 02:01 AM PDT

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t remember the last time when Huawei launched a LTE phone… Well, now they did, by announcing the Activa 4G model on MetroPCS. Huawei Activa 4G comes with a 3.5 inch display and can be seen below, with MetroPCS branding.

The handset runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread for some reason, on a 800 MHz processor, with a 5 megapixel camera on board as well. There’s also a 4GB microSD card bundled here and this is not quite top notch hardware, if you ask me. We’ve seen Huawei showcasing some nifty devices at MWC 2012, one of them even with an in house quad core CPU and another model claiming to be one of the thinnest smartphones ever. Anyway, know that the Activa 4G is reasonably priced, getting a $50 mail in rebate among others.

It goes for $149 with no contract, for a limited time only. The list price is $249 and you should take this handset as a sign that even budget phones are getting LTE nowadays. MetroPCS has a bunch of other LTE models right now, mostly units made by LG and Samsung, but the Huawei handset is certainly the cheapest.

Motorola Dinara for AT&T Leaks, Could be Atrix 3 Model In fact

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 01:21 AM PDT

The folks of The Verge have received an email showing what seems to be a photo of AT&T’s next Motorola smartphone, going under the codename Dinara. This could end up being the Motorola Atrix 3 and it appears that this model was already launched in China last year and rumored for AT&T since its debut.

The device features a 720p display, Android 4.0 and looks like a decent follow-up to the Atrix 2. The latter had a $99 launch price and the only reason it didn’t become a bigger hit was the iPhone 4S debut on the AT&T LTE network. We can’t say if this model will be called Atrix 3 officially, but on July 26th we might found out more. That’s the date shown on the screen, probably a hint towards the debut date of the handset. The handset comes with LTE, a variation of Motoblur and rumors say it will also sport a 4.5 inch HD display.

Other features include a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a surprising 13 megapixel camera, once again according to rumors. As you can see, this model has no physical buttons on the facade, a welcome design trait in the modern world of smartphones.
