Lumiappaday #220: Smashing Planets demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 01:35 PM PDT

The developer of Smashing Planets contacted us 3 weeks ago about their game. It’s pretty good, a very polished game where you have to defend your planet against incoming attack by guiding the missile path towards your enemies. There’s a level mode and and endless survival mode.

This is really well priced, at £0.79 it’s worth it. You do get a generous trial to give it a go though to see if you’ll like it but note, there is no survival mode. It’s a fun and cute game and you should definitely give this one a go.

MNB RG: Windows Phone progress according to StatCounter

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 04:47 AM PDT

This is a follow up by Janne to yesterday’s post. This is a little more of a broader overview as opposed to just looking at two extremes, Finland (very small population) and China (huge population).
Yesterday we took a look at the growth of Lumia in Finland (http://mynokiablog.com/2012/06/21/mnb-rg-finnish-lumia-growth-in-june-exceeds-may/). In a comment jiipee suggested that we also compare the progress to other countries.
The attached graph shows StatCounter percentages, that is basically market share percent amongst existing devices (measured in network usage), in several countries since Windows Phone 7.5 launch in September 2011.
USA, UK, Germany and China are obviously included, as is Europe as a whole. Finland is included as Nokia’s home and Iceland as the (my guess) second “best” market for Windows Phone at the moment.I was trying to include India and Russia, but was unable to get Windows Phone data for them via StatCounter. If anyone can tell me how, please do. So, I included France and Australia instead, just for fun.
Some notes that may/may not be reflected on the graph:
  • Note that out all these Finland and Iceland are small markets, with single-figure millions of people. Changes there are therefore faster to achieve than in other examples.
  • In Germany, France and United Kingdom, Lumia launched in November 2011.
  • In Finland, Lumia launched in February 2012. Same with Iceland and Australia. These show in the stats.
  • In U.S., Lumia 710 launched in January, Lumia 900 in April 2012. Latter was especially significant. marketing and operator-wise.
  • In China, Lumia launched in late March, with the ever-important Lumia 610 following in May.
  • In Finland (and many other places like Australia), Lumia 610 and 900 launched in late May 2012, which may show in June stats.
  • In Germany, does the decision by some operators to not carry Lumia 900 show in the June stats. Maybe.

Nokia 808 PureView unboxing in Philippines (26,550PHP)

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 04:47 AM PDT

You may have had your fair share of Nokia 808 PureView unboxings, but this one is a little significant to me as it’s recorded in the Philippines. Makati to be exact.

They note that the price there to be around PHP 26,550. That’s a direct conversion to just £401/626USD/499EUR.

Not bad at all

Windows Phone in China reaches 2.54% says Statcounter

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 02:07 AM PDT

As noted in a comment by Keith in Janne’s last post, China seems to be responding to Windows Phone. It had previously been reported that there was a possibility that it had somehow overtaken iPhone in marketshare.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/18/windows-phonelumia-in-china-yay-or-nay-possible-7-marketshare-in-china/

Folks noted that in no way did statcounter reflect this. Having said that, it is important to note that statcounter’s mobile OS data is across ALL current handsets in use. Given China’s enormous population, it would be difficult to even make a blip so early on. As such, some dismissed this as lies.

Somehow it has. 2.54%. A random blip in a week.

I can’t actually believe this might be the case and reckon there might be an error somewhere in how statcounter is reporting. It might be a momentary blip. Looking back since January, WP has been making a slow but steady growth in China. Not sure how since they weren’t officially available there until end of March, right?

Hopefully this correlates to Nokia Lumia doing very well in China and NOT the other manufacturers trying to eat Nokia’s ever vanishing pie.
