Engadget’s Nokia 808 PureView ReView – OBLITERATES every other camera phone, revolution of stills and video for entire imaging industry

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 12:15 PM PDT

Here is Engadget’s Nokia 808 PureView review. It’s more music to my ears when we see source after source after source telling it like it is with PureView. It’s not just fan sites, it’s not just Nokia friendly sites, it’s the major tech blogs acknowledging Nokia’s continued superiority in imaging. It is PHENOMENAL. It is FANTASTIC. It is a Jobsian superlative like no other in the camera department. The 808 knows what it is and is the damned best at it.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/26/nokia-808-pureview-review/?m=false

The 808 is also praised for the robust hardware. It’s a constant fear by many that if dropped, the surface will be worse for wear than the phone.

  • we can’t think of a phone that has a more solid-feeling plastic shell than this.
  • It feels so hardy that if we were to accidentally drop it, the pavement below us might come off worse.
  •  One pleasant surprise is the screen’s performance outdoors. The Lumia 900 offered a similarly stand-out experience,
  • Ignore the frustrating mess that is Belle. Take one picture with Nokia’s 808 PureView and all will be forgiven. We dare you
  • It’s difficult to relay exactly how thoroughly awesome this camera is and how stupendously phenomenal the resulting shots are.
  • This device instantly obliterates every other cameraphone, while simultaneously giving most dedicated point-and-shoots the proverbial finger.
  • So what do images taken with the 808 PureView look like? Detailed, vibrant, and noise-free
  • PureView represents a revolution in terms of stills and video performance — not just for cameraphones, but for the entire imaging industry.
What about the software? Symbian on Engadget, how will they respond? The old engadget team (now on TheVerge) was not too keen on it.
  • On the surface, navigation around home screens is generally responsive and slick, with a nice transitional animation between each screen
  • The app drawer is also responsive to your swipes, with a new list or icon view that bounces at the top and bottom of the respective views
  • Nokia Maps stands out yet again, as the Espoo cartographers prove they know exactly what we want from mapping software.
  •  Despite Symbian Belle’s new additions, this keyboard remains old and difficult to steer.
  • web browser on the 808 PureView is faster and more capable than any Symbian device that came before it.
  • Still, it trails the performance of other phones that are half the price. Page scrolls are a stuttering affair, and crashes are a regular occurrence. Throw in a media-rich site and you’ll have signed the browser’s death warrant
  •  obscurity-bound Meego-powered Nokia N9 handled browsing with more aplomb
  • we imagined this tech on almost every other mobile OS — the disappointing user experience of Symbian pervades everything you do with the phone, detracting from all that camera magic
  • Symbian is ready for retirement. It’s had its run, and while there’s still plenty of clever ways to augment what it can do, why go through the hassle?
  • On the camera side, however, it’s a marvel. The camera app launches swiftly from the lock screen, thanks to that single-core 1.3GHz processor, and capture follows about a second afterwards.
Conclusion:
  • The Nokia 808 PureView is the best cameraphone out there, but you’ll have to be willing to forgo the simplicity, function and comfort of competing smartphones if you intend to own it.
  • In general, you might hear reviewers toss around clichés like “setting new benchmarks” and “peerless results,” but in this case, all these platitudes ring true. The 808′s low-noise shots, even in dim light, and its loss-less digital zoom features roar. Throw in the superb video and audio recording performance and you have have a clear cameraphone champion.

Inode Entertainment passes 100M downloads at Nokia Store

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 08:09 AM PDT

We witnessed something rare a few time before that Pico Brothers and India games reached 100M downloads. Inode Entertainment joins the 100M club.

Inode Entertainment creates apps for gaming, productivity, tools and personalization. The Inode team produces games on
four platforms including S40, S60, Symbian^3 and now Nokia Lumia.

Monster truck challenge, Mingzhu, sudoku killer, etc are one of their most successful applications.

They even try to make most of the application free to the consumers but if they make any paid app then the highestprice mark for that application doesn’t go above 1 Dollar. Their main focus is on developing games, which they have been doing since 2006.

So, on the behalf of MyNokiaBlog we congratulate them for this wonderful achievement and hope they continue to do well in future.

Nokia has also made a video for congratulating them and giving the title “100 million in 100 Seconds”:

Lumia 900 for a penny (one cent) on Amazon- All Colors

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 07:45 AM PDT

No, not THAT Penny, one less shiny and worth alot less; yup the Lumia 900s ALL OF THEM are on sale online at Amazon mobile for ONE CENT, that’s .01 of a dollar or a 99.99% discount on the original already dirt cheap $100 price tag, or course you have to pay for the service fees from At&t but damn I wish phones were subsidized that cheap here (or at all). All three colors (White, Black and Cyan) are for a penny but only on Amazon as Att.com is still selling them for the 100 dollar price tag. I’m not sure when this offer started but if you don’t mind not getting the fullout WP8 experience and will settle for a UI overhaul then this is the time to buy.

808 Pureview Appears on UK’s Nokia Page, Also Available on Amazon UK for £499

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 07:24 AM PDT

As Jay posted earlier it does appear that the 808 is indeed coming to the UK after-all, first popping up on the UK’s bit of the Nokia site with the usual “game changer” title more interestingly is its availability on Amazon.co.uk from June 3oth onwards (less than 4 days now). The online site has both the black and the white models going for £499, I’m not sure how much the N8 sold for when it was first released but I would assume it was something similar?

Nokia 808 UK product page

You can go ahead and preorder the 808 from Amazon using the links below, but don’t expect to get it before the 30th as it’s not in stock yet.

Amazon links:

Black 808 Pureview: amazon.co.uk/gp/pr…

White 808 Pureview: amazon.co.uk/gp/pr…

Anyone getting one, or is that price a bit too steep?

Thanks for the tip DKM

Nokia Asha 305/311 spotted on Navifirm

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:13 AM PDT

It’s not a big deal but it’s Navifirm now which gives some good news.

I was checking for some updates for lumia. Suddenly I saw the Nokia Asha touch phones the Asha 311 and Asha 305 but Asha 306 is missing.
There are the four colors in which the Nokia Asha 305 is showing up

  • Grey, Blue, Red and White

The Nokia Asha 311 also showed up in same colours.

Nokia Asha 305 is RM-766 and Nokia Asha 311 is RM-714; both phones are showing the same version that “3.60″.

I think this suggests the new Ashas may be available soon.

Prashant.

Another look at the unannounced Nokia Lumia WP8 Proto from WP8 announcement

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:13 AM PDT

Here’s another look at the unannounced WP8 Lumia proto that was demoed at WP8 launch. Note the positioning of ambient light sensor/FFC is different to the one we saw yesterday.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/06/25/video-unannounced-wp8-lumiaproto-in-nfc-demo/

As pointed out in the last comments, this still has the old Windows style button and not the new Windows icon.

It’s rather uninspiring. It has a plug attachment at the bottom. It has all been at the top for Nokia so far.

Check out the one from yesterday’s post. It seems to have tapering edges.

Nokia 808 PureView coming to UK, Orange in July, O2 in June?

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 05:03 AM PDT

Here’s a nice surprise if true. Orange and O2 are going to be picking up the Nokia 808 PureView for the UK!

This means people can purchase the Nokia 808 PureView on contract, as well as getting it SIM Free through other means.

Now there’s only 4 days of June left. O2 are apparently going to be getting the 808 in June. Orange in July. Hopefully the representatives questioned are not simply sales peeps.

I can’t see anything on o2′s coming soon page regarding any Nokia. Orange’s coming soon page is about as useful as waterproof coffe granules, showing nothing at all on their coming soon page.

Nokia 808 PureView Tips (Part 3): How to capture low light pictures

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 04:54 AM PDT

Time for Part 3 to Nokia’s Nokia 808 PureView photography series. This episode talks about low light photography, which isn’t simply just turning on the flash.

Learn how to capture low light pictures with Nokia 808 PureViewhttp://nokia.ly/MyfQtc

In Creative mode, you can select the ISO setting to be anything from 50 to 1600. The higher the ISO setting, the brighter the picture is under low-light conditions. It is also possible to set the ISO on automatic.

The best possible low-light performance is achieved when the camera is in PureView mode at 2/3, 5 or 8 megapixels. To allow exposure times of up to 2.7 seconds and to take “noise free” pictures in low light conditions, you can manually set the ISO low (e.g. 50). For the best results, it is recommended to use a tripod or similar support, or to select Auto ISO or Night mode.

What if: Qt hope still at Nokia with Linux based Smarterphone?

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

I was surprised to hear about Meltemi being axed so soon after hearing some conflicting information about Qt and Linux at Nokia. One thing that was never really made clear is what was happening to the Linux based Smarterphone OS that Nokia purchased. Let’s say I had a feeling that Nokia would still be doing something with it, and that there is still some Linux fun to be had at Nokia.

A few days ago, Prasenjit mailed with some info to say that there’s still hope for Qt as folks are indeed working on Smarterphone. This is nothing concrete of course and could be little more than what ifs and wishful thinking. But nothing yet has been said about Smarterphone being canned, right?

I do not know what meltemi is… but I have some interesting information to share. First Nokia is still working on a Linux based OS; smarter phone people working on it…

Ulm project has been canned. What I know is Ulm was again a competing fork to what nokia has been doing as usual nokia mistakes.

But now development has been solely concentrated on that effort, we will see Qt effort soon in July Nokia announcements or at Nokia world.

Also, nokia MSFT deal is exclusive on windows phone and nokia can use internal options but not android that's part of strategy.

Will provide more information to you soon.

There has been zero news on the smarterphone front. Their blog page has been static since October 2011. But you can at least see that it’s public, it exists and it looks really good, especially given as they reckon they can target $25 market. Prasenjit says he can share some more information later.

Cheers Prasenjit Singh Bist for the tip!
