Google Files Antitrust complaint Against Microsoft, Nokia

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 09:34 AM PDT

Google is pointing fingers these days, this time at Microsoft and Nokia, through an antitrust complaint filed in Europe. This will be filed by an US filing of the same suit. Google called MS and Nokia “patent trolls” and claims that the two companies have received unfair advantages from third parties.

An example is Canadian company Mosaid Technologies, that’s supposed to legally enforce their patent rights and share the revenues with the two giants. Google describes its own actions as a pre-emptive measure to avoid potential suits in the future. The problem is that phone making companies may perceive Android as a vulnerability, of various firms start tearing it apart with lawsuits about patent breach. So, these phone makers could opt for Windows Phone software instead, in order to avoid problems…

Nokia and Microsoft are supposed to do all these moves to raise costs of mobile phones, says Google. Microsoft replied, by saying that the search engine giant shouldn’t complain about antitrust in the smartphone biz, since it controls 95% of the mobile search and advertising, with is also reason to start some antitrust investigations. MS also says that Google is abusing standard essential patents without responding to the regulators’ complaints. Nokia and Mosaid didn’t comment on this. If you want background, know that last year MS and Nokia made a cross licensing deal for patents. Also Mosaid bought Core Wireless and 2,000 wireless patents originally filed by Nokia. So, now the company is in very good terms with MS and Nokia, as it keeps the patents tight to the chest…

iPhone 5 Front Side Finally Pictured, Caught on Camera in Japan (Video)

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:05 AM PDT

The folks of macotakara.jp, a Japanese Apple-related blog have managed to somehow score the facade of the new iPhone and caught it on camera. They have a video of it, that you can see below and a bunch of photos as well. This week has been filled with images of the Apple handset leaking online, especially back plates.

As you can see there’s also a picture comparing the front panel with the iPhone 4S. The length of the diagonal is established at 10.33 cm, so around 4 inches of liquid crystal. The sensor bar is above the edge of the iPhone 4S when the two handsets are next to one another, so we’re dealing with a device that’s about the same width, as shown here, but a bit longer. The backside of the glass must still go through some processing, painting and coating. The Home button is present, if you had doubts about that.

This front side of the iPhone 5 is very thin and doesn’t reveal much about the display, that’s supposed to also upgrade the resolution of the previous iPhone to something like 1136 x 640 pixels. This week we’ve seen a smaller connector dock leaking online and found out that the speakers on the handset will be bigger now and also that the FaceTime camera and audio jack have been moved. As usual I advise you to take the info with caution… Enjoy the video:

Fresh iPhone 5 Leak: Back Case, Mini Dock, Taller Display, Moved Earphone Jack

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 02:18 AM PDT

This week we’ve seen a lot of the iPhone 5 in leaks, with a focus on back plates and minor components, like docking connectors. Now several more images appeared to user us into the month of June, that will see iOS 6.0 previewed at WWDC 2012, most likely.

The new shots are in high resolution and get rid of all doubts and blurriness. They show a comparison between the black and white versions of the next generation iPhone back. As you can see, metal is used very much for these back cases and I wonder if it’s merely a stylistic choice, or it actually has a certain purpose. The metal antenna band is molded into the metal backplates. That’s probably Apple’s way of creating a unibody layout for mobile handsets. Apple could use all the space it gets to integrate that rumored bigger battery, to power up the LTE chip and rumored bigger display.

The photos show some of the features of the next gen iPhone, stuff like the smaller dock connector, the moved earphone jack (to the bottom corner of the device), redesigned speaker grills and a brand new opening between the camera lens and LED flash. The opening could be meant for the second microphone to the back, for better audio capture in video recording. These are all speculations and should be taken with a grain of salt! Other rumors include a 3.9 – 4.1 inch display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution and nano SIM card slot.

Best Buy Getting the HTC EVO 4G LTE Tomorrow, According to Leaked Email

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 01:41 AM PDT

Rumors about Sprint’s release of the HTC EVO 4G LTE on June 2nd have been going on for the past days. Well, now there’s a leaked email out there, proving that the info was real and also involving retailer Best Buy. The handset should have debuted earlier, but it was held up at the US border, because of a patent beef. HTC One X for AT&T was also held up…

Back to the leak, an internal email revealed that starting tomorrow Best Buy will be selling the HTC EVO 4G LTE. The retailer started receiving units on Thursday, but preorders and regular sales will only debut on Saturday, June 2nd, matching the Sprint release. Pre-orders will also be accepted on June 1st, that’s today. However, there appears to be a loophole, allowing some people who had previous preorders to get their unit of the EVO 4G LTE earlier, meaning that they got it yesterday!

Any of our readers lucky enough to snatch the phone so early? Let me remind you that I’m talking about a 4.7 inch 720p smartphone here, with a Super IPS LCD2 screen, HTC Sense 4.0, 8MP camera at the back, Android 4.0.3 on board and dual core Snapdragon S4 processor at 1.5GHz.

Windows Phone 8 Apollo Screen Resolutions Leak

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:39 AM PDT

WP Central has some insider news on the evolution of Windows Phone 8, reporting that the following can be resolutions of devices running the new OS: 480 x 640, 480 x 800, 720 x 1280 and 768 x 1280. Below you can see a comparison of the resolutions, in case you’re curios.

It would be nice to finally reach 720p on Windows Phone as well, since Android devices are already headed to the world of 1080p graphics, courtesy of LG. Notice the aspect ratio differences here, that actually point towards the different handset formats enabled by this OS. The VGA one is pretty strange and it brings in mind a portrait QWERTY device, one that Nokia would succeed in making, having experience in this field. Not quite sure what to make of the 1280 x 768…

Maybe it’s the resolution of a bigger device, something like 5 or even 7 inches? Anyway, this fall we’ll get to know more and see more diversified designs in the Windows Phone segment, that till now has only relied on full touch models and two or three sliding keyboard units.
