WP Vs. iOS: App Design Comparison- Feat. Lumia 710

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 08:57 PM PDT

Personally App design is more important than actual function; yes I’m one of those people who prefer form over function simply because I want to enjoy what I’m doing, which is mainly one of the reasons why I loved WP; regardless of the number of apps the fact that they just look good plastered on my screen makes up for a missing feature here or there; I’m sure not everyone would agree but once again that’s my personal preference. Of course most WP apps are just as functional as their counterparts on different OSes if not slightly more functional (prime example is Facebook for WP); all that aside I personally believe that the panoramic metro style of switching through panes to get more content is  perfect for apps as it gives more flexibility to the developer and the user (each “sub menu” can have it’s own screen rather than ending up as a mess of menu hierarchy- which was the down fall of symbain originally).

The nice folks at Pocketnow put together a nice gallery comparing some of the more popular apps between iOS (on the iphone 4S?? or is that the 4?) against WP 7.5 (on the Lumia 710- which btw looks dashing with that yellow rim)-

Now that you’ve seen a couple comparisons what are your thoughts? iOS is built upon having a unified setting/share/edit bar on the top of the screen which almost always will end up dictating the design of all apps; meanwhile WP has the menu popping up from the bottom (when pressing on the  three dots)  while also giving some flexibility to the devs. to choose the icons for these options as well as adding other buttons elsewhere; so basically it comes down to unification vs. Beauty which would you prefer?

Microsoft Unveils New “Surface” Tablet Line Running Windows RT & Win 8

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:48 PM PDT

Earlier today Microsoft held a launch event for what you see above; the new range of Windows tablets FROM MICROSOFT (Not a 3rd Party OEM); Microsoft announced two tablets under the new range called “Surface” one of these tablets runs the default desktop version of Windows 8 while the second runs Windows RT which is the tablet/touchscreen liter version of windows, Windows RT is probably the closest thing to what to expect from WP8 and so far things look promising.

Just check out this awesome Promo/Teaser video:

The Surface tablets also come with a killer feature which is the cover that’s much more than a cover, one cover (both snap on magnetically like the iPads smartcover) has a fully functioning keyboard with keys that sink down when pressed on, while the second cover is basically a gigantic trackpad.

The color choices of the keyboards remind me of the Lumia ranges colors

The trackpad cover is less than 3mm thin… that’s crazy.

Both tablets have an integrated kickstand that pops up ninja style.

  • Capacity: 64GB / 128GB
  • Availability: ”Three months after” the Windows 8 launch this fall

On a Nokia related matter what does this mean for Nokia? Will Microsoft start to make their own phones as well; competing with their OEMs? (Microsoft has no problem pushing 3rd party manufacturers away as they recently banned HTC from making any Windows RT devices simply because “they weren’t dedicated enough”). Hopefully it won’t be long now until we see a Nokia tablet (can’t help but think of the “Coffee tab“) although design wise the surface tablets aren’t bad looking.

Nokia 808 PureView vs Canon EOS 5D Mk III vs Olumpus PEN E-PL2

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Here’s another comparison with the Nokia 808 PureView against some big guns again, the behemoth Canon EOS 5D Mk III, the non nonsense Olympus PEN E-PL2 and because it’s always compared to everything an iPhone (4S).

http://blog.gsmarena.com/nokia-808-pureview-vs-olympus-e-pl2-vs-canon-5d-mark-iii-vs-apple-iphone-4s-38mp-shootout/

Yup, just more evidence to how amazing PureView is. I guess the purpose of the iPhone being there is for folks who think it’s great to realise that, well if that’s great then the 808 is ridiculously, magically, phenomenal.

As GSM Arena notes, in bright lighting the 808 in full resolution is a killer (or words to that effect). Those bigger sensor DSLRs are able to show more prowess in lower lighting. Then you switch to PureView mode which makes it still a great challenger to compacts.

Point is though, as GSM Arena points out:

the fact that it's able to match such elite competition in any environment is a huge achievement on its own.

Nokia 808 PureView Blue and Yellow variants? + Firmware update on Navifirm?

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:40 AM PDT

Hey folks. We’ve received screenshots from a couple people today showing two main things. First, there seems to be an update from the current v309 (v112.20.309) to v112.20.310.

Secondly, it suggests that there are two additional colours on the way. Blue and Yellow.

Do you reckon that’s actual devices in new colours or just accessories?

Cheers Antti and Zack for the tip!

NDTV’s Nokia 808 PureView Video Review

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:02 AM PDT

There was quite a bit of reaction to the ndtv take on the Nokia 808 PureView by you guys.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/03/24/weekend-watch-nokias-41mp-monster-nokia-808-pureview-reactions-from-ndtv/

Now the 808 is officially available in India, here’s their review:

  • They call it a camera with a phone
  • Phone is a little big but good job on minimising the phone without unbalancing the design
  • Weight apparently a shocker
  • 4″ AMOLED disappoints in resolution – ‘a real waste’
  • Simple symbian phone
  • Devil is in the detail – an amazing level of detail in the pictures.
  • Zoom into the photo and keep pinching, and keep pinching.
  • Pictures are so detailed you can zoom into the smallest detail but do we even need 41mp? [The answer is YES. If you want the best performance, YES. If you want to improve over the bog standard photos, yes.]
  • @DhruvBhutani answers :D
  • Belle ‘did shock the world with the choice of OS’
  • Is it a huge mistake to put such a huge camera in a phone with Symbian? [Well, it's either bring it out with Symbian or not at all. And FP1 is improved, no where near as frustrating as S^3/Anna/Belle]
  • At 1.3GHz it ‘lags behind dual core and quadcore ruling the market’. See. This is the kind of perception on specs we need to get around. The only way at the moment is to MEET those standard specs, even if they don’t do that much. It just shuts people up as most are unlikely to bother with questioning specs…unless it’s either too huge or from Nokia (remember how it was more MP the better until 41mp arrived, lol. But no worries! We have evidence pouring out of our ears that PureView in Nokia 808 is not a gimmick and outperforms every other camera phone by miles to the point it has to be compared with advanced compacts and professional cameras).
  • Buzzing with integrated audio support from Dolby giving a great sound
  • Device is sturdy, even 1400mAh good to last a day
  • Price – a steal for people who want to own a spectacular feat of technology
Scores an overall 9 out of 10.
I like that massive 808

Lumiappaday #216: TheTrainline.com demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 02:30 AM PDT

Ignoring the name, this isn’t a website but the Trainline.com’s app for WP, which quite nicely on their page shows the Lumia 800 (prior to that N8, as it’s also available on Symbian)

This is useful for checking train times but you can also buy tickets from this app (and you can collect the physical ticket at the station later).
