Nokia Lumia WP8 to come with Qualcomm S4 dual core?

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 05:49 PM PDT

Forbes titles their post to suggest that the future Nokia Lumia WP8 phones will get dual core. This isn’t just any dual core, this is Qualcomm’s S4 dual core, which we heard may be coming at least to Nokia’s W8 tablets. The S4 Krait chip has been shown, at least on benchmarks to produce some excellent and ‘Amazing/Insane’ results, rivalling and at times outperforming (on those tests) quadcore counterparts.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/greatspeculations/2012/06/07/lumia-to-add-dual-core-processors-with-windows-phone-8/

Now WP,  like Symbian and MeeGo extremely well on single-core. First gen and current gen WP7 run so fluidly, 808 runs the fastest Symbian ever and N9 is also very fluid.

In WP7 it’s not so much a choice to be single core because it can’t make use of multicore at the moment. On performance at least, it runs core activities just as well as multicore rivals. I’m all for multicore. I don’t believe it’s just some negative battery drain – well, if the OS can’t use it properly, then yes. There may be instances when a multicore chip will only activate one core if that’s all that is needed – which in WP’s cases is pretty much all the time.

CNet points out that phones like the OneX and S3 activate additional cores for more graphically intensive games. It is of interest that US versions of the One X and S3 are NOT quadcore but dualcore.

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/windows-phone-8-could-have-dual-core-chips-but-not-use-them-50008164/

At the very least, having multicore would satisfy the users who enjoy playing the specs game. For them, spending hard earned cash requires investing a little research into bigger numbers being better. When comparing phones on a spec sheet – user experience is hard to compare so go on quantitative metrics of multicore immediately being better than single core. I don’t think it’s enough for Nokia or Sony to try and point out that multicores/quadcores are not yet efficient enough. The very biggest deal is their product perception of being ‘behind the times’. Perhaps the typical non techy end user might not be aware of it, but what about those reporting about the tech and subsequently the staff at retail store who are recommending what phones to get.

If you’re at a gig, concert, festival etc, you might want to record a clip of the artist you’re listening to. If you’re sober enough, get your 808 out. Not only will you get some decent video but your audio will sound amazing too.

Check out these following videos from ‘Pinkpop 2012′. Get this playing on some decent speakers

Rumours of Samsung bid for Nokia – er…Shut up and Keep your money!

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 07:51 AM PDT

Another day another rumour. Precisely one year ago, Nokia denied any possibility that Samsung were going to buy Nokia. Yet rumour has sprung up again.  That shouldn’t be that surprising though.

It’s the hot topic of late that Nokia is the buy out target of some other bigger company. MS is a popular contender and many think Facebook might do it. Who can blame them – the situation for Nokia looks quite dire. Nokia know this, but the year has not ended yet, and there’s a better second half of the year to go if we are to believe Nokians.

kauppalehti.fi reckons Samsung is offering 4 Euros per share. That’s shy of just under 15 Billion and would make Samsung even stronger than they are now.

I’d like for once for Nokia to stay its course – no surprise negative strategical changes or a buyout. Just shut up and keep your damn money. I just want Nokia to show us the fruits of this strategy change. What’s the point of a difficult transition if you give up when it hurts and not stick around long enough to see the rewards. Yes, there’s only so much anyone can take but I just have a feeling Nokia’s really close to delivering.

This is the thing that worries me the most is that something will derail Nokia again from ever reaching the final stage of a strategy. I think/hope however that Nokians are confident that they have some great products to deliver in the second half of the year. Look what we’ve just seen happen to S40. Extremely good value for money products, very enticing to the 40 line up. What more for Nokia’s other plans, eh? We’re still yet to see the next billion stuff (the one that has Qt).

The only overtaking of Nokia by Samsung that I can bear for now in the headlines is the loss of the top mobile phone manufacturer crown. As we said before,  Focus now on products, on customer satisfaction, on timely products (and the marketing to give all that ample awareness).

Video: Nokia Flagship Store Finland tour (filmed by Nokia 808 PureView)

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 06:33 AM PDT

Take a look at the Nokia Flagship Store in Finland, tour presented by Risto Lahi.

The Nokia Store is apparently getting renovated in time for Nokia World during the summer so it might be the last time it is seen in this configuration. By then it will have the new products perhaps :) Some of the new smartphone like Asha 305, 306 and 311 and fingers crossed, some other devices eh? :p (Just wishing).

Downstairs, Risto said he was just training the Nokia store recruits about the Nokia 808 PureView, which is filming this video. During video recording I was on touch focus to begin with but then later on switched to continuous autofocus. It has its uses to switch from one to the other as you’ll see in later demoes. It’s too late for me now to get any more demoes but hopefully I’ll get my hands on the 808 another time.

Video: Nokia Asha 311 camera UI and multitouch pinch zoom demo

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 06:13 AM PDT

We’re done with the quick overview videos of S40 Touch. I’ve got, I think, a couple more videos to look at some new things.

In this video we can see the camera UI of the full touch S40 as well as the multitouch pinch and zoom action. It’s smooth enough, no?

Not bad for this price range. The multitouch is enabled in maps as well although to say it stutters is an understatement. I guess I should have tried to see how the multitouch action worked on the resistive 305 too. Yes, in case you missed it, they are all multitouch capable. Being resistive does not mean it cannot be multitouch.

Here’s what the 306 page says:

Capacitive Multipoint-Touch

BTW, I said I didn’t like the design of the 305/306 that much but in this colour I think it sort of works.

OK, next up, Nokia Asha 305/306 hands on and a quick gallery. This one had a cable stuck at the back so it was harder to take pics of it.

The main difference with the 311 is that the 305 and 306 have resistive displays. It needs a little pressure so you can’t do that effortless finger swiping that you can on capacitive. 305 is the dual sim version.

So after the launch we had a brief demo time with the Nokia Asha 311, the higher end of the first set of Full Touch S40 handsets.

In a little later, I’ll be uploading the 305/306 demo which shows just how much difference the capacitive screen makes. Also I think the 305 is just darn ugly whilst the 311 is quite classy looking (well, in black or white).

See in action the swipy home screens, notification bar etc. I’ve got a couple or so more videos looking a little closer at some of the features.

Nokia Asha Launch Nokia House (internal for Nokia Staff) with snaking conga, dancing Blanca Juti and Asha Touch Cakes!

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 02:24 AM PDT

I was told that normally, during a launch of new devices, emails would be sent out to the staff. To do something different, during lunch, there was a Nokia Asha Party, including conga line and some excited latin dancing.

Do you remember Blanca Juti at Nokia World 2011? She introduced the Asha series with an excited, energetic little dance on the stage. It seems that wasn’t just a one off. At the start of the day Blanca and her team were on the front doors of Nokia with flyers and stickers and hugs and excited greetings to let them know that something’s going to happen around lunch time.

This was not a blogger/media event, but something nice for the Nokia staff.

This conga line Nokia snaked around the cafeteria (as can be seen in the video) finally ending in a collective dance in the middle.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView Tips (Xenon Flash)

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 01:29 AM PDT

Nokia are doing another series of camera tips (like they did with N8, all of which still apply now btw if you fancy digging that up) for the Nokia 808 PureView.

This first one is about Xenon Flash, although it says in the video and description that it’s about Bokeh (selectively in focus shots with nice blurred out of focus areas).

Xenon flash is great for lighting up people in extreme low light situations, providing extra bit of light if snapping people too against the sun and as shown in the video, freezing moments in time. Couple that with the huge sensor and PureView mode – it makes for excellent extreme low light people photos. N8 and N82 both have this too and that’s why even to this day, N82 is still a very excellent pocket camera, N8 more so and well 808 is just indulgence. Unlike the previous two, the 808 also has LED for video.

The Xenon bulb in the 808 is super bright. LED flashes are a joke in comparison, and even some of the other attempts of other manufacturers to squeeze in xenon. With more light from the xenon flash, a faster shutter speed can be used. Try LED vs Xenon on a water drop or an electric fan or a friend jumping. Notice the motion freeze, little or no blur with the xenon.  N82, N8 and 808 are brilliant for nights out. Not just because of the camera performance but also the convenience of not having to carry a phone AND pocket camera.

There are times however when 808 photos look much nicer without the xenon flash. The auto mode for the flash is smart enough most of the time to distinguish when it needs it or not.
