N.O.V.A 3 Review – Best FPS on Mobile Phones/Tablets Right Now (Video)

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 04:37 PM PDT

Since we’re testing the Samsung Galaxy S III right now and we’re preparing a review, we also gave a very cool game a deep analysis. I’m talking about the famous FPS N.O.V.A 3, created by Gameloft and available in Google Play Store for about $7. The games take up 2GB of space on your device, so you should prepare some storage for it. All in all it’s worth it, since it’s a very addictive experience and appealing title.

This FPS seems very much inspired by Halo and Crysis, so if you’re into those titles, imagine that you’re playing them on your mobile. You play as Kal Wardin, back to Earth to regain it back from the Volterite. You arrive in former San Francisco, now in ruins because of aliens and have to fight your way out of trouble. The game follows the classic FPS recipe, with the usual sniper, shotgun, laser gun, rocket launcher and other such weapons, available for you. Using a virtual analog stick on the left side of the screen you’ll move forward and backward, while the right side is used to move the camera around. Also on the right side of the screen is a shooting button, jump button, special powers button, aim button, plus the weapon switch/reload button and grenade button. Quite a lot of them, right?

On the left side there’s a small run button, in case you feel heroic. The graphics of the game are fantastic and it’s truly a piece of work from Gameloft. The shadows and lights are very well done, the physics are OK, the AI is decent and you’ll get 10 levels to play through in the Campaign area. And then there’s the multiplayer with around a dozen of folks shooting each other in Capture the Flag, Instagib, Deathmatch and other cool modes. You get credits after finishing a mission, so you can buy upgrades. You can use a sniper, pilot a mech robot, drive a buggy, basically you can do everything you did in Halo, if you want a comparison. How cool is that? More details and some gameplay are featured in the video review below.

HTC Says It’s Still Committed to High End Devices, Less Lower End Units Coming

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 01:23 PM PDT

HTC recently stated that it will remain faithful to the higher end segment of handsets, launching less lower end units in the future. During a recent interview, CEO Peter Chou confirmed that direction and considering Apple is able to sell a lot of devices with a SINGLE smartphone, why wouldn’t HTC be able to sell millions of units of one or two smartphones during a year?

However, they’re still launching stuff such as the HTC One V and the Desire C, so it’s not all high end out there. The problem is that even the highest end model of the bunch, the One X is plagued by issues, on the display side, software issues, WiFi hardware and meanwhile the One S also has its bugs. Not to mention the chipping of the One S, some signal problems for the One X and the customs blockade from Apple. It’s raining problems for HTC, apparently and they must do something to gain momentum.

Their shares at are an all time low (not really all time, but rather a couple of years), so they should pick themselves up and deliver. I never understood the deal behind the HTC Rezound, for example, that didn’t arrive in Europe, where it could have made it big time! At the rate things are going LG should be beating HTC when it comes to the quality of their handsets and evolution. I’ve seen the LG Optimus 3D Max and it’s a clear evolution from its predecessor. The LG Optimus Vu is also pretty cute… Is HTC able to deliver one more smartphone to blow our minds this year?

Nokia Firing 10k People, Changing Management Bigshots…

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 11:57 AM PDT

I can’t seem to understand Nokia… they keep changing leaders, teams, strategies and partners and they’re going lower and lower into the downwards spiral they’ve entered for the last 2 years. So, today we learn that Nokia will eliminate 10k positions by the end of 2013, so these people will lose their jobs.

The factory in Salo, Finland will also be shut down and that’s from official sources. There will be a R&D facility in the same place, but the number of people it employs is unknown. The R&D facilities in Ulm, Germany and Burnaby, Canada will also be shut down. Meanwhile, Vertu is for sale to make a hundred or two millions of euros. Vertu will apparently be bought by EQT VI, an European private equity firm. And on top of that, Nokia announced that they’re going to buy most of Scalado’s assets, an imaging company based in Sweden.

Scalado is responsible for the “zero shutter lag” technology and a prototype technology called Remove, that clears up objects from your photos in real time. It also highlights objects that you’ll be able to remove manually. And if the 10k jobs axed weren’t enough, lots of senior officers will be leaving. Jerri DeVard will step down from the position of chief marketing officer, while Mary McDowell will step down as executive VP of Mobile Phones. And finally another name I’ve certainly heard, Niklas Savander – he will be leaving from the position of executive VP of markets.

Will there be a company called Nokia 5 years from now or just a shadow of it?

Huawei Ascend P1 Gets Priced Ahead of European Launch

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 09:18 AM PDT

Huawei was the first company to hold a conference at MWC 2012 and they announced a bunch of very interesting phones, including the quad core Ascend D Quad. However, there’s also an appealing dual core unit coming, the Ascend P1, the thicker brother of the P1 S, one of the thinnest Android smartphones in the world. This one was announced in January and shown at MWC 2012.

The P1 has just been confirmed for European debut and Huawei announced a while ago that they’ll be bringing this handset to Europe this summer. The device already shows up on preorder status in a bunch of countries and the price tag is around $565. For that amount you get a dual core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4 processor, similar to the one on the Galaxy Nexus, but running a bit faster. There’s also a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED qHD display on board and the case here measures a pretty thin 7.7mm, merely 0.6mm thicker than the Droid RAZR.

Ascend P1 also has 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of ROM, HSDPA, an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, geotagging and 1080p 30 fps video capture, plus a front 1.3MP cam. Android 4.0 ICS is here as well and you get a Li-Ion 1670 mAh battery to juice up the handset.
