Zynga to bring games to WP

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 05:42 PM PDT

Words with Friends screenshot

The final post from that same Nokia Conversations article, is to do with Zynga bringing some of their games to the WP platform. Something that has annoyed me is people thinking your phone is inferior because you can’t Words With Friends, or Draw Something with them. Well, that may soon change, as Words With Friends, and Draw something, are coming to WP. The expected release of these games is Autumn, with the release initially being limited to the Nokia Collection, and then a few months later, being available for all Windows Phone devices.

Nokia Lumia 800 & 710 has updates coming. Tango rolling out globally from June 27th

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 05:34 PM PDT

It was the only Tango related image I found, sorry.

Along with Nokia Conversations posting about new apps coming, they have also posted news regarding an update coming. This is more than likely Tango,as the update comes with “tethering, media streaming from your device, and Flip-To-Silence”. We have seen confirmation that the update is floating around, being tested and approved recently by Vodafone Australia. The update that brings tethering has also been confirmed, based on Software Version, to be Tango. Let’s hope it is the same one.

The update will be phased in globally, starting from June 27th, via Zune. Apparently, the update is needed to fully take advantage of the apps highlighted in the previous post.

They also make mention of the 7.8 update for existing devices.

Elsewhere, you may have read about the new Windows Phone 8. How does this affect your Lumia? Well, you are not being left out. All Lumia smartphones will be getting an update to give you some of the features of Windows Phone 8, including the new Start screen, as well as a pattern of ongoing updates going forward.

New Nokia Lumia apps announced + release dates

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 05:26 PM PDT

Camera screenshot

I’ll split up the Nokia Conversations post as there are a few key things from the article.

We have been waiting for a long time to see that great new camera app come to our Lumia devices. Finally, we have some more info, a release date. Over at NokConv, they have announced that the improved camera features will be coming soon. “This will be available in Marketplace for the US and China by June 22nd. It will be available for all other countries in July.” The new features include;

  • Smart Group Shot: Capture great group shots in just one attempt by choosing the best faces from a burst
  • Action Shot: Capture fast-moving action shots with just one click and significantly improved shooting speed
  • Panorama: This new control feature makes it easy to capture beautiful panorama shots by finding the image in the sequence
  • Self-timer: Set up your Lumia on a stand and get yourself into more photos

Contact Share screenshot

A new app known as Contact Share will also be coming. This does what the title suggests, shares contacts easily. The app will allow you to share via SMS or Email. I didn’t even know my 800 couldn’t do this :/  Also, there is a new data counter app, known as Counters, coming to the Lumia range. It allows you to set-up limits, particularly helpful if you have restricted minutes or data. Like the Camera App, these will come to US and China by June 22nd, and available for all others by July.

PlayTo screenshot

PlayTo, something great that our Symbian devices have been using, is coming to WindowsPhone. It is something I have actually missed (luckily I have my N9 for all my DLNA needs) and I think it will help with those transitioning from Symbian to WP. Like the Symbian version, PlayTo works over the same simple DLNA sharing principles. This will be coming to the WP Marketplace globally by June 22nd.

Nokia USA confirms Lumia 900 to get 7.8 update in “coming weeks” (+ video of update running on device) Update: Marketing mixup, update referred to was Tango?

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 04:29 PM PDT

image

Nokia USA have tweeted stating that the Nokia Lumia 900 will be receiving the WP 7.8 update in the coming weeks. All that I know is that this update will bring the new WP8 homescreen we saw earlier.

image

However, Nokia USA tweeted again saying the update will bring all the features that are not hardware specific. What else will be coming? Skype integration? FOTA? We will just have to wait and see.

For now, here is a video showing off the 7.8 homescreen on a Lumia 900.

Update: Nokia USA have retracted their statement, stating the update they mentioned was not 7.8, but Tango. Hold on, the 900 has Tango? Did they let news slip that they shouldn’t have? Or is the person behind the Twitter account just making mistakes and has no clue what their talking about?

Cheers for the tip guys!

This may not mean anything at all, but on Navifirm, UK/Euro variants for the Nokia 808 PureView have been spotted.

That’s black, red and white 808 PureViews.

Cheers Al Reynolds for the tip

Lumiappaday #218: Toy Xylophone demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:40 PM PDT

Toy Xylophone is a children’s app that simulates, well, a toy xylophone. You’ve got a multicoloured one and a wooden one, both can take multitouch input of up to four points (though fitting four fingers at a time, even on the 4.3″ Lumia 900 is a task).

There’s a mode to let the xylophone play a song on its own. You can mute it so you can tap yourself and make the sound. You can change the tempo of the song (making it slower helps if you want to learn it).

Ideally, it would make a proper learn function whereby it waits for you to get the right keys first before going to the next one (there are similar apps that do this).

Rumours: Nokia Lumia WP8 for Verizon due September 5th? Slates incoming?

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 02:04 PM PDT

There’s been plenty of rumours flying around that I haven’t got to yet.

First up

http://www.insideris.com/nokia-windows-phone-8-handsets-launching-on-september-5th-verizon-exclusive/

Anywhoo, insideris reckons that Nokia may be launching their WP8 device as soon as September. They say that back in March they were tipped off anonymously about the Verizon Lumia WP8 handset appearing September 5th. But how could it be if WP8 was to be released in Q4?

They’re trying to connect the dots that due to today’s WP8 launch and Nokia World being rescheduled early, there’s a possibility that Nokia may be, the most unlikely thing you’ll hear combined in a sentence, ahead of schedule.

Cheers  BrownFinn for the tip!

Slates are coming. Not tablets as such just large screened phones. I don’t know how large but I’m expecting something like the Galaxy Note (5.3″) if we’re calling this a slate.

Remember, Nokia was said to be bringing some ‘hybrid’ device. Something between a phone and tablet.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/03/ollila-nokia-was-too-slow-but-now-will-deliver-products-on-time-suggests-hybrid-smartphonetablet/

Someone called Matthew Thornton seems to believe this device will have PureView. I don’t know if he is just rattling off the rumoured specs or if he knows something. They’re pretty much right on the expected WP8 specs (though they were much rumoured, public info too).

In 2013, Nokia are supposedly launching a thin QWERTY WP8

Err..Nokia Drive for ALL WP8 phones

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Nok Conv officially announces that all WP8 phones, Nokia Lumia and Non Nokia Lumias will get Nokia Drive.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/06/20/nokia-drive-for-all-windows-phone-8-smartphones/

This is a fantastic app I’ve been using on my Lumia. Is it a good thing that it’s appearing on non Nokia phones? Yes and No.

No in that it gave Nokia phones an added value. Free voice turn by turn satnav with Lumia.

  • Yes, because HTC is already offering their own turn by turn satnav (though not free)?
  • Yes because Nokia may be getting paid for others to use their service.
  • Yes because the Nokia brand proliferates. Now mapping is getting tougher with Apple kicking ElGoog out to join the game, trying to make Nokia Drive something more mainstream is necessary. I can’t wait for HTC staff to demo Nokia Drive :p.
Is there anyway to make Nokia’s version of Nokia drive a little better? Nokia Drive Pro?

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Video: WP’s 100K apps video promo (with erroneous video calling on Lumia 800)

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:19 PM PDT

A couple or so weeks ago, Michael posted news that Marketplace reached 100,000 apps. It was rumoured a long while back that when 100K is reached, that’s around when WP8 will be announced.

Here’s MS video for that 100,000 apps.

Note that they’re using a Nokia Lumia 800 but somehow manage to do face to face video calling. Also, where’s the Nokia logo gone :/

Nokia Suite 3.5 Beta Released! N9 users rejoice!

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 11:45 AM PDT

Dear MNB readers,

Our Nokia loving friends over at Symbiantweet have given the heads up that Nokia Suite has been updated to version 3.5.14 Beta! The new suite provides the usual bug fixes and improvements but in my opinion the BIG update is the added Nokia N9 support!

New functionality in 3.5 release:

  • Copy content between your Nokia N9 and your computer
  • Get important improvements and fixes for many problems

I don’t have a N9 to test what level of support has been added so if anyone would like to share their thoughts on the new update and N9 connectivity, please let us know in the comments section.

As always, thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog!
