Camera Comparison: Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4 vs Nokia Lumia 800 vs Nokia 808 Pureview vs NEX-5C

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT

The Nokia 808 PureView goes up against the Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 4 (not S?), L800, and a mirrorless interchangeable camera, the Sony NEX-5C.

In low light, the Nokia 808 PureView can get help from the huge sensor as well as oversampling. Looking at the shots of the waves, the iPhone 4 looks terrible (4S I would expect to be much better), but most surprising is how awful the new SGS3 performs -especially given that Samsung kept bigging up all the new camera ‘features’. I did not have the chance to test out extreme low light in 808 myself. I had it for one day and even though I had use of it up to the evening, during summer there is still very much light late at night in Helsinki. Sometimes the colours from the 808 look a little tame whilst others seem super vivid. This seems to be more of the nature of the auto-white balance more than anything (I find at times, the 808 appears to lose that warmth that’s evident even with my own eyes – I’ll need more testing than one day to make up my mind on that though).

Dynamic range of the 808 certainly impresses me. Here and in my own testing, I’m really surprised how without HDR it can capture fairly even exposure – nothing is too dark or too light.

Lumiappaday #205: Super Monkey Ball demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:28 PM PDT

We’ve got a demo here of the now classic Super Monkey Ball, an Xbox Live title of an accelerometer based maze game.

I’m not quite sure why but the controls seem to be no where near as good as any accelerometer based game I’ve played on WP, though I do recall it’s also quite difficult on other platforms. It’s a shame as it’s priced only at £0.79 and looks great.

Let's roll!  Guide a cute little monkey encased in a transparent ball to victory by tilting and rolling him through a variety of slopes and turns. You must navigate a large variety of obstacle courses to reach goal lines within set time limits.  Collect as many bananas as you can along the way and you’ll be able to increase your remaining lives.  Play through five worlds and 110 stages, designed to be fun for both first-time players and long-time Super Monkey Ball fans.  Enjoy rich 3D graphics with an easy-to-master control system that utilizes the accelerometer inside your device.  Insanely fun and addicting!

Seeking Alpha: Nokia undervalued stock, “Nokia’s is a steal at the current price and has a great future ahead of itself.”

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:19 PM PDT

Seeking Alpha has been looking at a few reasons why Nokia is currently a very undervalued stock, concluding that

“ Nokia’s is a steal at the current price and has a great future ahead of itself.”

http://seekingalpha.com/article/641771-nokia-it-is-time-to-buy-this-severely-undervalued-stock?

Seeking Alpha has been mulling over this subject for a while now over several recent articles, from not recommending, to unsure to now recommending Nokia.

Speaking on Value:

Nokia’s current value is mind-boggling. It is one of the most undervalued stocks I have ever seen. Nokia’s share price peaked at $40 in 2007 before declining to just $2.63. Part of this has come from Nokia truly losing value, however, most of it has come from consumer idiocy. Consumers have got too attracted to Apple and Google and have ignored smaller but better deals. Nokia’s current market capitalization is just $9.77 billion. It is worth more than $10 billion just from its share of the mobile market, in fact is worth significantly more if judged on a similar standard to Apple. On top of this, Nokia has compelling fundamentals, a solid cash flow, and an attractive balance sheet. Its metrics are a very attractive picture for potential investors. Its price/sales ratio 0.20. This is incredible as a company which is much worse off, the ailing company Research In Motion, trades at a price/sales of 0.27. Nokia’s price/book is at just 0.66.

Other factors include:

  • Rich patent portfolio
  • Potential Lumia 900 success
  • Potential Windows 8 success
  • Debt not an issue

Risks are noted, but Nokia’s value should apparently be higher even prior to Nokia doing anything with Windows 8.

The competition is tough and getting tougher. Should Nokia complete the turn around, Nokia’s stock is expected to increase rapidly. Right now it is the risk of the investors whether they believe Nokia stock truly is undervalued and Nokia’s future products can catch on.

I’m biased, but I see Nokia has a great future ahead of itself. There are more things going on at Nokia than Windows based products. S40 Full touch is just one example of that.

The first couple of quarters might not suggest that is the case but big, key things might be seen in the second half of 2012.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView (Red) First Unboxing at Nokia House

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:38 AM PDT

Yesterday I had a Nokia 808 PureView to play with at Helsinki. I got it mid morning at the Nokia Lounge in Nokia house and thought I’d do an unboxing.

I thought this was already unboxed but searching around on YouTube and Google, I can’t seem to find any other video that does show an unboxing of the Nokia 808 PureView.  (Some are titled as such but actually there isn’t even a phone in the video :/)

I got around to using the PureView in the afternoon. I’ll be uploading the pictures/videos of that soon (I’m just going to need to catchup on some sleep – I haven’t actually slept since Tuesday).

Concept: Windows Live Store (Marketplace, Zune, XBOX etc. all-in-one)

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:38 AM PDT

So the guys over at 1800pocketpc are at it again with their concepts. This time, they have designed a concept for what they are calling the Windows Live Store. This is a all-in-one store for all of MS services. Right now, they have Marketplace for WP, an XBOX store for XBOX games and services, Zune for Music and Videos, etc.

This concept unifies the experience, which in my mind, is what Win8 intends to do and needs to do.

Here’s what the designer has to say:

The current concept will take us in the future Apollo update of Windows Phone – with bigger and higher resolution screens, that will give us more information and better experience.
My idea is our account to keep all information about our downloads, purchased, uninstalled and refunded stuff. Also all application settings to be kept in the cloud and when you get a new device, only one synchronization divide us from our settings and apps.

Yanko explains each image in his concept in more detail, and it’s a fantastic read so I suggest you check it out. Here is a gallery of his designs.

Follow Euro 2012 on Nokia Maps

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 11:37 PM PDT

Nokia has launched a guide to Euro 2012. Users can find the information and location of  the stadiums and the full list of matches that will be played on. When clicking on cities like Kiev and Warsaw,  the link takes you to the City Guides, where one can see the current time and weather information, city facts as well as things to do and visit.

I like the overall interface of this guide, and I’m sure I’ll be using it during the Euro to check scores and updates. I hope Nokia may do the same for the London Olympics and the future big sport events.

European football championships starts Friday! How do you like the Nokia’s guide? What team are you going to root for?

IDC: Persistent with prediction that WP will overtake iOS

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 09:49 PM PDT

IDC is making some predictions again of the smartphone marketshares. By 2016, they expect Windows Phone to reach 19.2%, edging out iOS at 19.0%, far behind Android at 61.0%

Is WP even at 5% now? Are they predicting a good second half for 2012?

BTW, looking back at past predictions, it is interesting that despite all current events, IDC still maintains a similar prediction from last year (20.9%)

http://mynokiablog.com/2011/03/29/windows-phone-to-eclipse-symbian-ios-blackberry-by-2015-as-second-biggest-mobile-os-behind-android/#comments

Question on everyone’s minds…how does IDC pluck out these predictions?

Vodafone AU testing a WP update ‘MCR3′ Update: Confirmed to be Tango

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 09:16 PM PDT

I was on Twitter and noticed Vodafone AU posted a blog update with this week’s news on software updates.

As usual, it is full of Android FW, but to my pleasant surprised Nokia was featured. Apparently the Lumia 800 is getting a FW Update known as MCR3. Their other WP 7.5 handset, the Trophy 7, is also having the update tested.

What could it be? Is it Tango?

I asked both Voda and MS about it but MS say they have no info and Voda is yet to respond. Hopefully Voda hurry up with the testing and push this update to handsets fast, unlike other Nokia updates that tend to take 6 months.

I will keep you posted.

Update: Here’s a comment on their site, with a reply from a staff member

From that it’s confirmed to be Tango. You may ask how I know for sure? Reading “Mango Commercial Refresh” triggered my memory of 900/610 launch. They used that exact name when announcing what FW version the two devices would run. Finally we will have Tethering and more features. GET EXCITED! TANGO’S COMING!
