Leaked: Nokia Document listing features of WP8 coming (or not) to WP7.8

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 08:09 PM PDT

This just popped up on twitter, apparently from yesterday. Word is, that SmartPhone France have gotten hold of this leaked document. Here it is:

So what does it tell us? Quite a bit actually. Until now, the only thing we have known for certain was coming, was the New HomeScreen. It also looks like there may be a new lock screen coming. I hope it does and that it will be like in Win8, where you have an image, and can draw a pattern on that image, to unlock the device. Way better than the grid of circles implemented in Android.

The few HW related features such as NFC, MicroSD, MultiCore Support, Wallet etc., we already knew wouldn’t be coming. Everything else listed seems to be what was logically presumed.

With Nokia World less than 3 weeks away, I am getting excited to see what Nokia can do, and if it will be enough.

Lumiappaday #272: Mega Avatars demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 01:32 PM PDT

Mega Avatars is a free app from one of my favourite developers, MMMOOO (famous on Symbian for their skins).

With Mega Avatars, you can customise an avatar face – their skin, hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips, clothing and accessories. You can then save and set it as an avatar for your various networks. I like using it on the people tiles for folks that might not be on twitter/facebook and thus don’t have automated thumbnails (optionally I could take a photo but this allows me to customise even further what their tile looks like).

Also available for N9 and Symbian: http://store.ovi.com/content/301243

This is the second preview to Belle FP2 demoed on the Nokia 701.

I’m really liking the animations in the music player.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView – A journey through a cup

Another from one of our favourite Nokia CZ video makers, Topolino70 looks at some maple leaves through a simple cup.

Mystic journey through a cup to maple lands through dark maples lands to light maple lands where leafs bath in radiant light.

At light scenes I overexposed the video so that the maple leafs are light against bright background. Dark scenes I underexposed a little to have more dramatic effect.

Nokia Nostalgia: Nokia 7650

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 02:30 AM PDT

We’re looking at another phone in our short  series. This one is the Nokia 7650, a powerhouse of a Symbian Series 60 phone when it was first available. Note, the little ball thing seems to have broken off this unit. Shame as this is what people get to see at Nokia House.

This was one of the first phones ever with a camera built in. One of the first with colour screens. And also super powerful with Symbian on board. I remember being in utter awe of this phone and seeing my aunt with one (she always had the latest Nokia phones) I was mesmerised. Being from the future, this phone famously starred in Minority Report.

The screen was massive at the time. I remember having dreams about owning a phone with a camera. I remember reading about how amazing this phone was and eyeing up the TV remote control app that was possible with this phone.

Quick Quiz:

  • Without searching/looking it up, what’s the processor clocked at on the 7650?
  • RAM
  • Release date?
  • Display resolution?

Here’s some classic ads for the Nokia 7650.

This one goes down in mobile history as one of the iconic phone ads. They really captured the point about the uniqueness in taking photos in mobile. And to this day, Nokia is still the leader in imaging.
