Lumiappaday #280: Earthworm Jim HD demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 #XboxLive

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:52 AM PDT

I used to love watching Earthworm Jim as a kid, and found my friend’s gameboy game of it really addictive. Here’s  Gameloft’s Earthworm Jim game demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900. For touch controls, they’re pleasingly very responsive. It might seem slightly overpriced at £3.99 and looking on that price alone I might agree. But it’s the same price in iTunes App Store.

I think it’s mandatory to watch and listen to the theme tune!

Developer Blurb:

Grooooovy! One of the all-time most iconic video game characters is now coming to your smartphone!

Live or re-live the freaky adventures of Earthworm Jim in a refreshing remake of the classic action/platform game.

Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very earthworm-like things. One day, during a battle in outer space, a suit dropped to Earth and landed on Jim, mutating him into a large and intelligent (at least by earthworm standards) superhero. When Jim learns of the evil plans of Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, he decides to rescue Princess What’s-Her-Name.

Play as the grooviest earthworm in the galaxy, and explore a crazy universe that offers huge gameplay possibilities:

- Run, gun, swing from hooks with your head, launch cows, bungee jump, rocket through speed levels and more.

- Face 12 types of enemies and 9 bosses.

- 4 different styles of gameplay: Side-scrolling run & gun, space racing, bungee jumping and underwater levels.

- 10 original environments divided into 16 levels.

- 4 levels of difficulty – including the challenging mode of the original game.

- The re-mastered cult soundtrack.

Unity Game Engine coming to WP8

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:38 AM PDT

Some great news apparently on the gaming front today. I say apparently as I’m not that versed in the significance of it all but it appears Unity3D is indeed a very popular gaming engine and it’s coming to WP8. With Unity3D used on other platforms, it is expected that popular games can get ported more quickly for WP.

The Unity community have supposedly been asking for WP access and highly anticipating WP8.

John Richards, Microsoft’s Windows App Marketing senior director said:

“We are excited that the Unity community will now be given the opportunity to develop world class titles for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8…The number of high quality Unity-authored games for the PC, Xbox, and mobile devices already created is staggering and we're looking forward to seeing these products appear in the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Marketplace.”

According to Unity Technologies CEO, David Helgason, it appears that at least 53% of mobile game developers have published games with the Unity Engine

Bloomberg: Nokia’s Asha handsets are a hit and buying more time for a comeback (+Nokia Asha 311 video review)

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:18 AM PDT

Bloomberg are reporting that Nokia’s rebound with Asha’s is giving them more time for a come back. The growingly popular Asha series are providing consumers with smartphone like features as basic handset level prices making them a hit amongst consumers. Apparently for India and China, Asha boosted Nokia’s basic phone market share to 35%.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-21/nokia-s-39-phone-rebound-wins-more-time-for-comeback-bid.html

These Asha series are also apparently winning first time buyers looking to upgrade to a more expensive handset. In total the basic phone unit for Nokia brought in as much as 49% of Nokia’s revenue last quarter. Bloomberg notes that shares of Nokia have increased 66% since the July 19th results.

Whilst we’re praising Nokia Asha, let’s take a look at CJ’s (of unleashthephones.com) review of the Nokia Asha 311. It’s quite nice to see how far Nokia’s S40 platform has come.

It’s surprisingly slick and can give similarly priced Androids a run for their money on features and responsiveness.

Rumours: Nokia Phi with 4.7″ screen – start selling in October? (+a Lumia for Verizon says Bloomberg)

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 09:19 AM PDT

About two weeks ago, Stipan emailed us this image of his calculations on the screen of the Nokia Phi – estimated around 4.65″

It has been a long time since we touched any comments by the much loved ElMu but this isn’t anything scathing about Nokia being bought by someone all over again.

It’s just some hints about the upcoming Nokia Lumia WP8 devices, article below:

http://tech.obozrevatel.com/hi-tech/07463-nazvanyi-tsenyi-na-tri-smartfona-nokia-na-wp-8.htm

There is nothing actually new about the information presented here, as they’re either currently rumours already or public knowledge.

  • Nokia Phi
  • Lumia 800/900 design
  • Thinner, larger
  • 4.7″ screen
  • NFC
  • LTE
  • Bigger Battery
  • 1 day use
  • $935/$780/$600
Nothing else specific is mentioned.
ElMu often has low expectations and comments about Nokia devices, despite bloggers elsewhere praising things to high heaven he might refer to as ‘mediocre’ or ‘average’ so for him to say that this screen is very nice and up to bar with the best models is saying something. Either something is lost in translation there, or the screen is direct straight from Samsung and hence why it’s getting some praise :P .
Not sure what is said in the last few paragraphs. Something about SGSIII spring release managing to sell a significant amount before iPhone 5.

Oh whilst we’re here, BloomBerg says Lumia WP8 is coming to Verizon this year. This has been much expected since Verizon has made bold comments about supporting WP and making it popular like they did with Android. However, with the Verizon Moto event plopped on the same day as Nokia event, there were doubts again. Perhaps it will appear at a later event? Anyway, BloomBerg says that the US’ number 1 carrier, Verizon, WILL be getting a Nokia Lumia WP8 this year.

Apple uses Lumia as an example to Samsung that not every phone has to look like iPhone

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:30 AM PDT

Are you following the spat between Apple and Samsung? No not me either really. Well not too closely, only when I get sent something interesting.

On TheVerge Live Blog, Apple has apparently whipped out a Lumia

“Not every smartphone needs to look like an iPhone.” Showing the Lumia…

http://live.theverge.com/apple-vs-samsung-apple-closing-argument/

There are many Nokia phone designs that are very unique in their own design. The tapering of the N8/X7 which Moto and Acer decided to copy. The N9/Lumia design is also proving popular with HTC and their polycarbonate curved screen OneX (as well as those several blatant N9 clones we saw at MWC/CES)

Looking at it as an outsider, it was clear that the SGS was an iPhone clone. Samsung had really nice designs of their own but they caught onto the fact that they must copy what is popular, not only down to what the phone looks like physically but how the rest of the UI appears almost as far as they can push it without putting an Apple logo. It’s even weirder when 4S arrived and is met with another similar SGSII and Ace. Perhaps they were both just coincidentally going through the same design evolution.

Like it or not, that was the popular design of the time. Samsung caught on to it and rode on the coat tails of Apple’s success, raising the profile of their own brand further where they needed to copy less. It was the iPhone for those who could not afford an iPhone. Well those are the words of several of my friends who have ended up with one…they wanted an iPhone but didn’t have the money so got something that looked like it and acted like it.

Does every phone have to be a rectangle with rounded corners? Well if every phone has a rectangular screen and you want to minimise the bezel it will be rectangular shaped.  Some might say that the N8 and 900 have an iPhone esque shape about them with a coloured bezel on the outside. I’d say Nokia’s had plenty of rectangular phones with rounded corners prior to iPhone (though with alphanumeric keypad).

However, if you look at all of Samsung’s phones of the past prior to iPhone,  you can see they have their own sleek-ish triangular/narrow-trapezoid style, less rectangular.

But no, not every phone has to look like an “iPhone”. Unless you’re Samsung.

Nokia 808 PureView for $599.99 at Amazon US

This is a third party seller and there are only two in stock, but Amazon US has the Nokia 808 PureView for just $599.99 now. That’s equivalent to about £316/€400. Amazon UK still has this priced quite high at £474.99, with Amazon Germany at €547.
