Motorola Calling Out Nokia, Holding Even on Sept. 5th; Calling it “Day’s Main Event”

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 02:17 PM PDT

It would seem the gloves are off, when it comes to Mobile OEMs competing against each other, first we had Chris Weber calling out Samsung to watch their backs. Now it seems Motorola have jumped in, attempting to steal some of Nokia’s thunder by holding an event the very same day the new Modified Nokia World is going down (Sept. 5th); with the invite claiming to be “the day’s main event”. I can’t seem to find the article but I recall either Samsung or HTC doing something similar a year or two ago (I think it was the launch of the Galaxy Nexus); regardless I hope Nokia have something in stock that will blow their minds. And more importantly I hope Elop or whoever is taking the stage is polishing up their speaking skills, I still haven’t forgotten NOT mentioning 1080p recording in the 808s launch.

To get a better idea ofwhat to expect at Nokia’s event check out some of the leaks that have trickled out over the last couple of weeks-

Hopefully we can expect something to satisfy all needs and cravings, from Pureview to Phablets (dare to dream of the two together?). Also note that the Motorola event is being shared by Verizon, can we expect a Verizon branded phone to be released by Nokia the same day?
P.S.- Motorola event is expected to be for the Droid Razr HD

Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 leaked? (Update, no it isn’t)

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 10:50 AM PDT

There we go, it makes another appearance but now with a name. The Nokia Lumia 820. Hopefully it is this bright red and not just the camera making it look that way.

The new Windows 8 logo is set at the bottom, similar design to the 900 just slightly slimmer.

Is it me or does the flat screen seem to be raised, i.e. no raised edge like the 900?

Update: It’s just a photorealistic render by Jonas whom we’ve featured a few times in MyDreamNokia. Yeah he’s that good.

Post PureView: Graphene sensors and Trillion FPS cameras that can look around the corner

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 10:44 AM PDT

This is really two separate posts in one which I’m tying up together because they’re sort of related.

What happens now after PureView? Well, the first direct story is actually something Nokia’s looking into. Graphene sensors. Graphene is regarded as the new miracle nano material, famously presented in the Nokia Morph concept.

Check out BBC Click’s article on Graphene for more which showcases, Nokia Morph.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/9491789.stm

UnwiredView reports that Nokia have filed a patent for  a graphene photo sensor.

http://www.unwiredview.com/2012/08/16/after-pureview-whats-next-frontier-for-nokia-imaging-how-about-graphene-based-photo-sensors/

Staska explains this would perform better than equivalent CMOS sensors in low light, as well as being much slimmer. Think of that PureView bulge being just as powerful in a smaller package. Think again were Nokia to remain being daring and stick even more power into PureView. Finally it would apparently be cheaper to produce.

This is something in the very distant future with regards to this camera femto tech being in a phone. Similarly, and onto our next story, the 1000FPS camera. Watch the TED presentation. They actually make note of the fact that imaging should switch from thinking about more megapixels is better :P (well it is if you do it the Nokia way) and focus on the next dimension of imaging.

In this video you can see a pulse of photons on ‘video’ passing through a bottle of water.  It’s quite amazing. To see a bullet played at the same speed, you’d be watching it for a whole year!

What can you do with this? Plenty of things. In the video they explain how it could be used to see if fruit is ripe. Well, not the coolest application. What does seem even more amazing is how they can use this technology to ‘see’ around corners.

They also envisioned this eventually arriving into phones, but again, quite far ahead into the future.

Whilst I’m here, let me stick a third one we might have mentioned before. Lytro – lightfield camera where you can choose the focus point AFTER you’ve taken the photo. It’s a bit like those 38mp camera – you choose to zoom in AFTER :P

Cheers all for the Graphene tip!

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:22 AM PDT

Popular titles, Draw Something and Zynga Poker are coming to Nokia Asha absolutely free.

Something else that’s quite significant is that apprently Nokia recently reached over 5 billion downloads at Nokia Store. with an amazing 42% of downloads coming from S40.

Here’s the Press Release for more details:

Nokia & Zynga partnership grows to bring blockbuster games to Nokia Asha Touch phones

Draw Something and Zynga Poker coming to over 100 million Nokia consumers during Fall 2012

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced they will bring Zynga’s global hit games, Draw Something and Zynga Poker, to Nokia Asha Touch devices in Q3 2012 as part of their partnership announced earlier this summer. Nokia Asha Touch users can soon challenge their friends to a round of the popular social drawing and guessing game, or enjoy their own virtual poker match. Zynga’s Draw Something and Zynga Poker will both be free to download from Nokia Store

The announcement reinforces Nokia’s commitment to delivering must-have app and gaming experiences to consumers of Nokia Series 40 devices, including the Nokia Asha Touch range. Nokia Asha Touch users already enjoy a variety of mobile gaming experiences enabled by global partners such as EA, Gameloft, Rovio, NAMCO BANDAI and now, Zynga.

“It’s great to expand our offering of Zynga games to deliver more blockbuster titles across our portfolio of mobile devices, giving consumers great choice and tremendous value,” said Bryan Biniak, VP & GM, Global Partnering & Application Development, Nokia. “With premium design, powerful hardware and outstanding gaming capabilities, we’re redefining what consumers expect from today’s feature phone experience.”

Nokia Asha Touch devices have been designed to provide an incredibly rich, fast and engaging experience to consumers:
- The beautifully crafted Nokia Asha 311 is a fast and fluid 3.5G capacitive touchscreen device, powered by a 1GHz processor to provide a great internet experience.
- The bright and edgy Nokia Asha 305 is a fun and affordable phone, featuring the exclusive Easy Swap dual SIM.
- Its sister, the Nokia Asha 306, is a single SIM model, and becomes Nokia’s most affordable Wi-Fi handset to date.

The devices feature the new, fully re-designed Asha Touch user interface, which combines proven ease-of-use from Nokia’s heritage with new, digital design innovations. The cloud-accelerated Nokia Browser 2.0 makes Internet surfing up to three times faster and 85% cheaper than comparable browsers, and is available to download for free from Nokia Store.

Recently, Nokia Store broke the five billion downloads landmark. From January to April 2012, 42% of all content downloaded from Nokia Store was delivered to Series 40 devices, including the Asha Touch range. To-date, more than 500 Nokia developers have apps which have achieved more than one million downloads, while India Games, Pico Brothers and Inode have all achieved more than 100 million downloads.

Press Release: Nokia comments on S&P’s credit rating announcement

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:22 AM PDT

Press Release from Nokia a couple of days ago:

http://press.nokia.com/2012/08/15/nokia-comments-on-sps-credit-rating-announcement/

Espoo, Finland – Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and CFO, comments on today’s rating decision from Standard & Poor’s:

“The impact of Standard & Poor’s decision on the company is limited. As we continue our transition, we are applying a strong focus on cash conservation while simultaneously reducing our operating costs and making our operating model stronger and more agile.

We ended the second quarter 2012 with gross and net cash both higher than a year earlier. With gross cash of EUR 9.4 billion and net cash of EUR 4.2 billion, we have a strong financial position and robust liquidity profile. We also have access to additional liquidity via a revolving credit facility of EUR 1.5 billion. This is entirely undrawn, available to us until March 2016, and comes without any financial covenants.”

Further information on Nokia’s debt instruments can be found in the company’s Q2 2012 Interim Report issued on July 19, 2012.

ACL for Jolla brings Android apps

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:22 AM PDT

This was supposed to be one of the ‘levelers’ people were looking forward to in Nokia’s Meego devices. Whilst there were Qt apps, sadly these were MeeGo Qt apps only that were immediately compatible (no Symbian Qt) so very little in the way of the ‘all important -_-’ app numbers.

ACL solves the App barrier by allowing Android apps to run on that particular OS. It sounds great but will it be great in practice?

Here’s a demo on a MeeGo tablet.

So on top of HTML5 and Qt apps, you’ve got the option for Android Apps. The OpenMobile site also mentions ACL for Windows.

My Dream Nokia #63: 41MP PureView twisty camera WP8/MeeGo Concept with 3x optical zoom.

Posted: 17 Aug 2012 12:51 AM PDT

This is the latest work by Edgar Mkrtchyan. It focuses more on the design rather than the dreamed up specifications. As you can see, it looks quite different from the standard smartphone.

It’s inspired by the 3250/N90, models which were supposedly being relived in upcoming Nokias according to rumours.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/04/weekend-lol-nokia-lumia-x-twisty-camera-n-gage-thing/

BTW, Edgar wanted to ask the photoshop pros here a question:

by the way I’d like to ask if anyone among the readers mastery photoshop well, because I find it hard to integrate a screenshot on a surface that is not front … you can do with another free software, easier to use? thank you, now I use FSViewer.

It looks like a regular phone with some pretty decent specs. Nice fat battery, 41mp PureView with 3x optical zoom. That makes it about 9x zoom when recording 1080p or 18x zoom at 720p (optical x smart pureview zoom).

You might think the camera bump is out of place.

This could make for some really high quality self portraits/video blogs as you twist the camera around facing you as well as getting some nice shots of some extreme angles whilst the camera viewfinder is still parallel with your eyes.
