Lumiappaday #286: Population Clock demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 01:18 PM PDT

Population Clock is a nice reference app to show population of the world. The main screen shows it ticking away, whilst also indicating how long until the next major milestone.

You can narrow this down to specific continents/countries, and can present it as a graph over time.

The source of this data is United Nations.

Viber Coming to S40 & Symbian + HD Video Calling for WP

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 11:58 AM PDT

Viber is now arriving on Series 40, Symbian and Bada, hits 100 million users

Viber, a VOIP for chat, pictures and video that’s a popular alternative to Skype has officially announced that they’re working on a version for Symbian as well as S40. Also announced is an upcoming update to Viber for WP that will bring support for 720p Video Calling (currently no video calls are supported for WP  in the current version of Viber- not even Non-HD). In case you’re wondering the Lumia 900 doesn’t support 720p out the front, but hopefully that’ll all change in the next iteration come next week.

Thanks for the tip KF

Today registration for the New York event has opened up online, and it’s free open to everyone above 18 years of age.  So if you’re in town why not stop by? Anyone planning on going? Also act fast as space is limited so you might not have long to register.

My Dream Nokia #65: 7610 esque WP8 Nokia Lumia concept

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 03:19 AM PDT

This is My Dream Nokia #65, by Edgar Mkrtchyan of course. At first glance it looks like a cross between Lumia and iPhone, what with the coloured tops on a rectangular phone with rounded corners. But this is an illusion at this angle.

Looking below, you can see the face is not symmetrical.  It’s a reverse Nokia 7610, pointy (ish) at one diagonal corner and curvy at the other.

The specs are mentioned in this post. 4.5″ AMOLED XWVGA, Dual Core 1.6GHz, 12mp, 2500mAh battery.

But looking at the side photos, for some reason it looks scalloped/warped – tapering to one side. The next picture explains why.

That’s because the thicker part houses the camera with xenon. It’s a very interesting take to the camera bulge.

Fakery continues? New pic of Blocky Nokia Lumia WP8 – with 12mp and DTS sound

You guys have concluded in the comments that the ‘picture’ we last saw of the WP8.

The same source claims this is the next Lumia WP8.

Bence BogarBence Bogar@bncbgr Here is the second photo of the newest@nokia #WP8 smartphone with 4.5″ screen, 12 MP Carl Zeiss optics and DTS sound. pic.twitter.com/hukvtao9

It tells of a very realistic 4.5″ screen. Not the 4.7″ rumour going around but the 4.5″ that Nokia Malaysia hinted at (as well as a few other sources).

Additionally, it’s supposed to have 12MP and DTS sound.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTS_(sound_system)

12MP is fine and dandy but I’d like to see it on par with the N8. That means effective use of pixels and including Xenon flash too, but it seems to be that Nokia cannot produce a phone with a good browser and a great camera. You’ll have one or the other.

Well, it isn’t an actual handset so we can all wait until the real one arrives before complaining.

Cheers Madhu for the tip!

Last week we saw a demo of an app called FireStarter, an Amazon Cloud Reader for MeeGo to read books online or download them to read offline.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/20/video-firestarter-amazon-cloud-reader-support-for-the-nokia-n9-and-n950/

That’s available at Nokia Store for £1.50.
